EA said it had made “select changes” within its Battlefield organization. MobileSyrup and Game Developer reported the changes as layoffs and said DICE, Criterion, Ripple Effect and Motive were affected. Game Developer attributed the four-studio scope to IGN’s reporting.

The reports said the number of employees affected, both overall and at each studio, was unclear. They did not identify individual employees or specify which roles were cut.
Were EA Montreal employees affected?
Reporting named Motive, which is based in Montreal, among the studios affected. EA’s Montreal careers page says EA Montreal includes Motive Studios. That establishes the studio’s location, not the number or identity of Montreal employees affected.

There had been an earlier change in how Motive’s Battlefield work was organized. In a studio update, Motive general manager Patrick Klaus said “a group of developers from Motive are joining the talented teams at Criterion, DICE and Ripple Effect to continue unlocking the full potential of Battlefield.” The same update said Motive continued development on Iron Man. It does not explain the March 2026 layoffs or establish how they affected particular people.
Why did EA lay off Battlefield developers after Battlefield 6’s record launch?
EA has not given a specific reason in the statement reported on March 9, 2026. The company said: “We’ve made select changes within our Battlefield organization to better align our teams around what matters most to our community,” an EA spokesperson told IGN. “Battlefield remains one of our biggest priorities, and we’re continuing to invest in the franchise, guided by player feedback and insights from Battlefield Labs.” MobileSyrup and Game Developer reproduced the statement.
That is EA’s explanation of the organizational changes, but it does not disclose the headcount, detail affected roles or explain a connection between sales and staffing. The reports and EA’s launch announcement do not establish that Battlefield 6’s performance caused, or should have prevented, the layoffs.

What did EA report about Battlefield 6’s launch?
In an October 16, 2025 announcement, EA said Battlefield 6 sold more than 7 million copies in its first three days. The company called it “the biggest opening ever in the storied Battlefield franchise.” EA also reported more than 172 million online matches played and more than 15 million hours watched on streaming services during the three-day launch weekend.
