A price cannot fall by 1,500% under the standard definition of a percentage decrease. A 100% cut takes a positive price to zero; a larger cut would imply the seller paid the buyer. In an October 2025 interview, Dr. Mehmet Oz defended President Donald Trump’s “1,500 percent” drug-price claim with examples that do not support that math.
What does a 1,500% price cut mean?
A percentage decrease is measured against the original price:
Percentage decrease = (original price − new price) ÷ original price × 100
For example, if a prescription costs $100 and falls to $50, the decrease is $50. Divide that $50 decrease by the starting $100 price and the reduction is 50%.

- A 50% cut takes $100 to $50.
- A 100% cut takes $100 to $0.
- A 1,500% cut would take $100 to −$1,400 under the same formula: the buyer would receive $1,400 rather than pay for the drug.
That negative result is why “cut by 1,500%” cannot describe an ordinary reduction in a positive drug price. A price can instead be described as falling to a fraction of its original level, or as being a specified number of times higher than another price. Those are different comparisons, not percentage decreases above 100%.
What did Dr. Oz say about Trump’s drug-price math?
In an October 2025 Meet the Press interview, Oz explained Trump’s claim by saying that a $100 drug reduced to $50 was “100 percent cheaper” because the $50 removed equaled the $50 remaining. That compares the amount removed with the amount left over, rather than with the original price. The standard calculation is ($100 − $50) ÷ $100 = 50%.

Oz also cited an example of a drug falling from $200 or $240 to $10. The Independent’s report on the interview gives the example as $242 to $10 and calculates the reduction as 95.87%. That is a steep decrease, but still below 100%—and nowhere near a 1,500% decrease.
What policy was Trump describing?
Trump tied the figure to a proposed “most-favored-nation” approach: setting U.S. drug prices in relation to prices abroad. At an August 26, 2025 Cabinet meeting, he said the U.S. would match the lowest price abroad, while foreign prices would rise somewhat and U.S. prices would fall substantially. He repeated the 1,500% figure in that discussion.

Trump had made a similar claim at a July 22, 2025 reception for Republican members of Congress. He described an asserted $1,300 New York price for Ozempic compared with $88 in London. Those figures are part of Trump’s remarks; the transcripts do not independently establish them as market prices.
The transcripts document what Trump said and the policy idea he described. They do not show that the promised reductions were implemented or quantify savings patients actually received. Nor do the cited examples establish what any particular person will pay for a prescription.

Why the comparison can sound plausible
People sometimes describe a price by comparing it with a much larger price elsewhere. If a U.S. price is ten times a foreign price, the U.S. price is 900% higher than the foreign price—not 1,000% lower when it falls to that foreign price. If $100 falls to $10, the decrease is 90%, even though the original price was ten times the new one.
That distinction matters in personal finance: “X times cheaper” and “a reduction of X percent” are often used loosely, but they do not mean the same thing. To evaluate a claimed savings figure, identify the starting price, the ending price, and the denominator used to calculate the percentage.
