You needed a clear buyer benefit, a blockchain, a smart contract or launch platform, permanent-enough file storage, a marketing plan, and a budget for development, legal review, gas, security, and customer support.
Because 2024 has passed, the menu names, marketplace policies, fees, and software versions below should be checked against current documentation before you reuse this as a live launch plan. The financial and operational decisions, however, remain relevant.
1. Define what buyers actually receive
Start with the utility of the NFT, not the artwork. A buyer might receive collectible ownership, event access, a membership credential, an in-game item, proof that a physical product is authentic, or the right to redeem a digital or physical item.
Write the benefit in one sentence. For example: “Each token gives its holder access to two online workshops during 2024.” If you cannot explain what the holder receives without discussing resale value, the project is not ready to launch.

Avoid describing the NFT primarily as an investment, passive-income product, or asset expected to increase in value because of your team’s future work. The SEC’s September 2024 enforcement action involving Flyfish Club showed that NFT branding does not remove securities-law risk when marketing creates an expectation of profit from the issuer’s efforts. Speak with a securities attorney before using revenue sharing, dividends, fractional ownership, profit promises, or investment language.
2. Choose the token standard

ERC-721 is usually the simpler choice for a one-of-one or generative collection in which every token is separately owned. ERC-1155 is more efficient when you need editions, multiple item types, or batch operations.
OpenZeppelin provides implementations for both standards. Do not treat a standard implementation as a complete commercial contract: pricing, supply limits, mint permissions, withdrawals, pausing, metadata behavior, and administrative controls still need to be designed and tested.
3. Pick a launch route
Route A: OpenSea Studio
OpenSea Studio was suitable for a standard collection whose minting requirements fit OpenSea’s drop tools and for creators who did not need to write and maintain a custom contract.
- Connect the wallet to OpenSea.
- Open OpenSea Studio.
- Select Drop a collection.
- Enter the contract logo, collection name, token symbol, and blockchain.
- Select Continue.
- Approve the deployment transaction in your wallet.
After deployment, return to OpenSea Studio, select the collection, open Details, and complete the collection information. The Earnings tab is where creator-earnings recipients can be configured in the standard flow.
This route reduces development work but gives you less control. Confirm the supported blockchain, supply model, mint limits, pricing options, and metadata format before paying the deployment cost.
Route B: A custom smart contract
A custom contract makes sense when you need custom mint phases, token-gated access, signed mints, allowlists, redemption logic, on-chain metadata, or integration with your own website or application.
OpenSea’s SeaDrop protocol supports public drops, Merkle-tree allowlists, server-signed mints, and token-gated drops. A contract using SeaDrop must implement the compatible interface and authorize the SeaDrop contract to mint.

Use environment variables or a secure secret manager, and consider a separate deployer wallet with only the funds needed for deployment.
4. Use compatible development tools
Older NFT tutorials often import @openzeppelin/contracts/utils/Counters.sol. That pattern does not work with OpenZeppelin Contracts 5.x because Counters was removed in version 5.0. OpenZeppelin 5.x also requires Solidity 0.8.20 or newer; many current examples use ^0.8.24.
A minimal ERC-721 starting point is:

}This example is intentionally incomplete. Anyone could call the public mint function, there is no supply cap, no price, no pause switch, and no withdrawal process. A production contract needs explicit decisions about authorization, payment currency, mint limits, sale phases, replay protection, reentrancy, token URIs, and administrator permissions.

5. Prepare and store the NFT files
For each token, prepare the media file and its metadata. A practical inventory includes:
- the image, video, audio, or animation;
- the token name and description;
- the token ID mapping;
- trait attributes;
- an optional external URL;
- any animation, audio, or video URL.
A typical ERC-721 metadata file looks like this:

}Use canonical ipfs:// references when storing NFT assets on IPFS. A gateway URL can be used by your website or application for convenience, but it should not be the only reference embedded in the metadata.
IPFS is not automatically permanent. A file added to IPFS may become unavailable if no node continues to provide it. Pin important CIDs through a reliable pinning service or your own node, and keep an independent backup of the original media and JSON files. For a local Kubo node, the basic command is:
ipfs add -r ./assetsFiles added this way are pinned on that local node by default. That does not provide redundancy if the computer is destroyed or goes offline. Use a second pinning provider, IPFS Cluster, or another continuously available storage arrangement for a project that buyers are paying for.
IPFS data is public by default. Do not upload private customer information, unreleased personal data, or confidential files unless they have been properly encrypted.

6. Upload and inspect the collection
For an OpenSea-created drop, the workflow was:
- Open the collection in OpenSea Studio.
- Open the Items tab.
- Upload the media files.
- Select Download Examples to obtain the expected CSV format.
- Complete and upload the metadata CSV.
- Use Preview to inspect the collection.
Check every row before publishing. The most common failures are mismatched token IDs and filenames, missing metadata JSON, inconsistent trait spelling, broken animations, and descriptions that accidentally reveal private information.
Test images, video, and audio through more than one marketplace or gateway. A file that works in your browser may still fail in a wallet or marketplace preview.
Deploying a contract does not necessarily create an immediately visible OpenSea collection page. OpenSea documentation stated that the collection page is created after OpenSea detects the first mint event for the contract.
7. Set the drop economics before announcing it
Prepare a simple budget rather than assuming the mint will pay for the project. Include:

| Blockchain | Deployment gas, mint-related transactions, and operational transactions |
| Legal | Terms, privacy documents, intellectual-property review, and securities advice where relevant |
| Operations | Customer support, moderation, refunds or redemptions, and accounting |
| Marketing | Content, partnerships, advertising, community tools, and fraud prevention |
Set the supply, price, currency, wallet limit, sale phases, and maximum mint per transaction in writing. Then calculate break-even sales after marketplace fees, payment costs, taxes, refunds, and the portion of proceeds reserved for delivery of the promised utility.
Do not budget around royalties from future resales. Creator fees are not automatically guaranteed on every secondary-market transaction. OpenSea distinguished between optional creator fees and enforced creator earnings, with enforcement depending on compatible contract and marketplace transfer mechanisms such as ERC-721-C or ERC-1155-C arrangements.

Fee policies can change. For example, OpenSea announced that its platform fee would increase from 0.5% to 1.0% effective September 15, 2025. That change is after the 2024 launch period, but it illustrates why live fee documentation must be checked before publishing current calculations.

Test the contract on a test network or local environment before mainnet. At minimum, test:
- minting before and after the sale opens;
- the exact supply limit and one mint beyond it;
- per-wallet and per-transaction limits;
- valid and invalid allowlist proofs;
- invalid, expired, and replayed signatures;
- incorrect payment amounts;
- paused and unpaused states;
- withdrawal permissions and payout addresses;
- the first, middle, last, and nonexistent token URIs;
- transfers to ordinary wallets and smart contracts;
- failed transactions and duplicate requests;
- creator-fee behavior where relevant.
Do not rely on the website to enforce rules. A user can call a public contract function directly and bypass buttons, JavaScript checks, hidden fields, and disabled mint controls.

9. Secure wallets and administration
Separate the wallets used for contract deployment, treasury funds, team operations, public mint proceeds, and testing. A compromised deployer or administrator wallet can be more damaging than a coding mistake.
Use a multisignature wallet for treasury withdrawals and important administrative actions where practical. Before launch, verify the payout address character by character and send a small test transaction when appropriate.
After deployment, verify the source code through the relevant block explorer. Preserve a record of:
- contract address and chain ID;
- deployment transaction;
- compiler version and optimizer settings;
- source-code commit;
- media and metadata root CIDs;
- administrator and payout addresses.
10. Publish only after an independent launch check
Configure the drop name, creator information, social links, schedule, sample gallery, roadmap, and team details. Then:
- Set the mint schedule and supply.
- Confirm the contract address, blockchain, price, currency, and wallet limits.
- Publish the drop page.
- Approve and sign the required on-chain transaction.
- Pay the displayed gas fee.
- Mint a test token if the platform permits it.
- Check the live page from a separate browser and wallet.
- Announce the verified URL and contract address.
Do not announce a mint link copied from a draft, preview, social-media message, or unverified team chat. Compare the published page against the launch checklist immediately before posting. Self-serve drop creation also did not guarantee inclusion in OpenSea’s drops calendar.

FAQ
How much money did it cost to launch an NFT project in 2024?
There was no single launch price. A small self-serve collection could involve platform and blockchain transaction fees plus artwork, storage, website, legal, and marketing costs. A custom contract added development, testing, auditing, and security costs. Build a budget from those categories instead of relying on a claimed fixed amount.
Should I use ERC-721 or ERC-1155?
Use ERC-721 when each token is individually distinct. Use ERC-1155 for editions, multiple token types, or batch minting. The choice should follow the product and minting requirements, not just the artwork format.
Are NFT royalties guaranteed on secondary sales?
No. Creator fees may be optional, and enforcement depends on the contract design, marketplace, order type, and supported transfer-validation mechanism. Do not include future royalties in a break-even calculation as though they were guaranteed income.
Can I launch an NFT project without writing a smart contract?
Often, yes. A platform such as OpenSea Studio can deploy a standard contract through its interface. Use a custom contract when you need custom sale phases, allowlists, signed mints, redemption logic, token gating, or application integrations.

A responsible NFT launch is a small product-and-finance operation, not simply an image upload. Define the holder benefit, choose the token standard and launch route, budget for legal and security work, pin the metadata redundantly, test contract rules directly, secure the wallets, and verify the live mint page before promoting it. Treat resale fees and future demand as uncertain rather than as guaranteed revenue.
