The 12 Best Places to Buy Seeds Online

Buying seeds online can save money, but the cheapest packet is not always the cheapest way to grow a garden. Shipping charges, packet size, germination rates, return deadlines, and whether a seller specializes in your climate can all change the real cost.

The best choice depends on what you are buying: dependable vegetable seed for a large garden, rare heirlooms, microgreen seed by the pound, low-cost packets, or flower varieties that are difficult to find locally. The 12 retailers below cover those use cases, with current shipping, guarantee, and product details checked August 9, 2026.

1. Johnny’s Selected Seeds: best overall for serious gardeners

Johnny’s is a strong default when reliability and growing information matter more than finding the absolute lowest packet price. The employee-owned Maine company has operated since 1973 and sells vegetable, herb, flower, organic, and farm seed for both home gardeners and commercial growers.

Its catalog currently includes 680 organic products, and the company says it breeds and trials varieties under organic conditions. That makes Johnny’s particularly useful when you need disease resistance, dependable varieties, or larger quantities for a productive vegetable garden.

  • Great way to stock up for the next planting season! Includes Freedom Farms Vegetable Set Mylar Bag for Optimal Seed Packet Storage!
  • Wonderfully producing plants - Current stock will last for years when stored in a dry - cool place!

Pay attention to the return policy before ordering. Authorized returns of unopened seed are accepted within 60 days of the original order ship date, and returns require preauthorization and an RMA number. This is a good retailer for planned purchases, not for ordering a large assortment and deciding later.

2. Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds: best for unusual heirlooms

Baker Creek is the place to browse when ordinary supermarket varieties are not the point. Its catalog emphasizes rare, historic, international, and visually unusual vegetables, herbs, and flowers, including a particularly broad selection of heirloom tomatoes and peppers.

For U.S. shoppers, the financial advantage is straightforward: Baker Creek currently advertises free year-round shipping within the continental United States. Standard free delivery generally takes 10–12 business days; paid priority shipping is estimated at 4–7 business days. Orders generally ship within 3–5 business days, so free shipping is not the right choice if you are already late starting seedlings.

Purchases are covered by a two-year limited warranty. International customers should check the restrictions before paying: most non-Canadian international orders are limited to 10 packets, and the company does not currently ship to the European Union, Chile, New Zealand, or Australia.

3. Botanical Interests: best for packet information and beginners

Botanical Interests earns its place through the information printed on its packets. Depending on the variety, you may find an ideal soil-temperature range, expected days to emergence, and special germination instructions. That information can prevent expensive beginner mistakes such as sowing too deeply or using soil that is too cold.

The company says seed lots are tested by an independent laboratory and must meet federal and its own germination standards. It offers organic varieties, says its seeds are untreated, and does not knowingly sell genetically engineered seed.

Botanical Interests currently offers a one-year seed satisfaction guarantee, but ships seeds and hardgoods only within the United States. It is a good option when clear instructions are worth more to you than buying the largest packet available.

4. Seed Savers Exchange: best nonprofit source for heirlooms

Seed Savers Exchange is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 1975 to preserve and share heirloom seeds. Its seed bank contains more than 20,000 varieties, and its retail shop focuses on open-pollinated, non-GMO, heirloom, and organic options.

  • Quality You Can Trust: Proudly made in the USA by a Small Family-Owned Business, our seeds for planting vegetables undergo rigorous testing with a 90%+ germination rate. Sealed to last for up to 2 years, you can trust the freshness and viability of our seeds.

There are two different buying experiences. The regular retail shop works like a conventional online seed store. The separate gardener-to-gardener Exchange can contain harder-to-find varieties and homegrown offerings, but you need an account to request or list seeds. Exchange seed comes from individual gardeners rather than necessarily from commercial seed lots, so compare listings carefully and do not assume the same testing or packaging as a retail packet.

This is a strong choice if your spending goal includes supporting conservation work or finding varieties with cultural and regional history.

5. Territorial Seed Company: best for Pacific Northwest and trialed varieties

Territorial Seed Company is based in Oregon and began with varieties suited to Pacific Northwest conditions. It now sells nationally and in Canada, but its regional expertise remains valuable for gardeners dealing with cool summers, wet weather, or long growing seasons that include fall and winter harvests.

Territorial says every variety it offers is grown and tested at its farm, every seed lot is tested by its seed analyst, and its germination standards exceed Federal Seed Act requirements. Its farm is USDA organic certified by CCOF.

The catalog is especially useful for four-season gardening, with crops selected for fall, winter, and overwintering harvests. Choosing a variety that fits your climate can be a better financial decision than repeatedly replacing seed that performs poorly in unsuitable conditions.

6. Southern Exposure Seed Exchange: best for the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast

Southern Exposure selects varieties for the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast, although many also perform well in the Midwest. Its catalog is practical for hot, humid conditions and includes Southern vegetables, open-pollinated varieties, and crops suitable for seed saving.

More than half of its catalog varieties are grown by small farmers or on Southern Exposure’s own farm. As of its 2025 catalog, 71% of the varieties were certified organic, and the company says 99% are open-pollinated. It does not offer genetically engineered varieties.

Read the labels instead of treating every green symbol as an organic certification. “OG” means certified organic. A green “e” identifies seed grown using the company’s ecological practices but does not mean USDA certified organic.

7. Fedco Seeds: best cooperative and cold-climate source

Fedco is a Maine-based worker/consumer-owned cooperative that has sold gardening and farming supplies since 1978. Its catalog is a good fit for northern gardeners, short seasons, cold-hardy crops, organic and heirloom varieties, seed potatoes, trees, bulbs, and orchard supplies.

Fedco’s most useful money-saving feature is its online Germination Test Results of Seed Lots database. You can see an item number, lot number, germination rate, and test date. That is more informative than relying on a generic catalog description when you are comparing older seed or planning a large order.

Fedco does not knowingly sell GMOs and works with small and regional independent growers. It is particularly appealing when regional adaptation and transparency matter more than polished packaging.

8. Park Seed: best traditional one-stop garden shop

Park Seed, founded in 1868, sells vegetable, flower, and herb seed alongside plants and gardening supplies. Its broad catalog works well for shoppers who would rather place one order than compare several specialist retailers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Park says it stores seed in climate-controlled conditions, tests lots when received, retests them during inventory, and uses light- and moisture-blocking gold-foil packets. Its stated germination standard is at least five percentage points above the federal minimum.

The current Park Seed Promise covers seed performance, but the seed guarantee requires contacting the company within six months of delivery. It excludes problems caused by extreme weather, neglect, or planting outside recommended hardiness zones.

9. Renee’s Garden: best for curated culinary and flower varieties

Renee’s Garden is a smaller, curated alternative to giant seed catalogs. It concentrates on culinary herbs, gourmet vegetables, specialty flowers, cut flowers, and varieties selected for flavor, color, and ease of growing.

The company has operated since 1998 and trials approximately 300 new varieties each year in gardens on both the West and East coasts. It says it does not sell chemically treated or genetically engineered seed and has signed the Safe Seed Pledge.

Organic seed comes from small USDA-certified organic growers, family farms, and cooperatives that meet Renee’s germination and purity standards. This retailer is a good fit for container gardeners and kitchen gardens where a few well-chosen packets matter more than bulk pricing.

10. True Leaf Market: best for microgreens, sprouts, and Asian vegetables

True Leaf Market is unusually useful for indoor growing and high-volume small crops. It sells conventional and organic seed, Asian vegetables, sprouting seed, microgreen seed, wheatgrass, and bulk quantities through brands including Mountain Valley Seeds, Sustainable Seeds, Kitazawa Seeds, Mountain Valley Hybrids, and Handy Pantry.

The company describes itself as independent and non-GMO, and says its seeds are untreated. Do not assume every sprouting or microgreen item is organic: organic availability varies by product, so check the individual listing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

True Leaf Market offers a 30-day unconditional guarantee for seeds and non-seed products. Its guidance also notes that germination depends on temperature, light, water, weather, storage, and growing skill. For frequent microgreen production, compare price per ounce or pound rather than packet price.

11. Pinetree Garden Seeds: best for low-cost home-garden packets

Pinetree Garden Seeds is a family-owned business that has operated since 1979. Its stated mission is to offer quality seed at low prices to home gardeners, making it a sensible starting point for a basic vegetable, herb, or flower garden.

The catalog is aimed at home-scale growing rather than commercial production. Pinetree says it has never sold genetically modified seed and has signed the Safe Seed Pledge.

Compare the number of seeds in each packet before deciding that a low listed price is the best deal. A smaller packet can be economical if you are growing in containers, while a larger packet may reduce the cost per plant for a full garden.

12. Select Seeds: best for antique flowers and unusual ornamentals

Select Seeds specializes in antique flowers, rare annuals, perennials, flowering vines, heirlooms, native flowers, and pollinator plants. Its catalog suits cottage gardens and cut-flower plans more than a staple vegetable plot.

Its current heirloom collection lists 414 items and describes its heirloom flowers as open-pollinated. Varieties marked “Organic” are certified organic by Baystate Organic Certifiers, and the company follows the Safe Seed Pledge.

The 2026 digital catalog supports page flipping, product search, full-screen viewing, and ordering. That makes it useful for browsing unusual ornamentals, but compare packet contents and expected germination time before budgeting for a large flower display.

How to compare the real cost of online seed

  1. Calculate the delivered cost. Add shipping and handling to the packet total. Baker Creek’s free U.S. shipping is useful, but its estimated 10–12 business-day delivery may not be worth the delay if you need to start seeds immediately.
  2. Compare cost per seed, not just cost per packet. Packet sizes vary widely. For microgreens, sprouts, and a large vegetable garden, check the price per ounce or per 1,000 seeds.
  3. Match the variety to your climate. A variety selected for your region can reduce failed plantings and wasted growing space. Territorial is especially relevant in the Pacific Northwest; Southern Exposure is particularly relevant in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast; Fedco is strong for cold climates.
  4. Check the production claim. “Organic,” “heirloom,” “open-pollinated,” and “non-GMO” are different claims. Heirloom does not mean organic, and a non-GMO packet is not automatically certified organic.
  5. Record the guarantee deadline. Save the order confirmation and inspect packets when they arrive. Current examples include True Leaf Market’s 30-day guarantee, Johnny’s 60-day unopened-seed return period, Park Seed’s six-month seed guarantee, and Botanical Interests’ one-year satisfaction guarantee.
  6. Check international rules before checkout. Seeds may be restricted by destination. Botanical Interests ships seeds only within the United States. Baker Creek has packet limits for many international orders, does not provide phytosanitary certificates, and excludes several destinations.

What the labels mean

Label What it tells you What it does not tell you
Certified organic The seed meets applicable organic production requirements and should be identified by the seller’s certification information. That the variety will grow well in your climate or germinate under poor conditions.
Heirloom The variety has a history of preservation or cultivation, often over many years. That the seed is organic or necessarily easy to grow.
Open-pollinated Seed can generally reproduce the parent type when properly isolated and saved. That every plant will be identical to a commercial hybrid or that cross-pollination is impossible.
Hybrid The seed was produced by crossing selected parent lines for particular traits. That it is genetically engineered; hybrid and GMO are not synonymous.
Germination percentage The share of seeds that germinated in a test under specified conditions. A guarantee of success in your soil, weather, storage conditions, or planting method.

FAQ

Which online seed company is cheapest?

Pinetree Garden Seeds is designed around low-cost home-garden packets, while Baker Creek’s free continental U.S. shipping can lower the total cost of a mixed order. Compare packet quantity and delivered cost rather than the listed packet price alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is buying seeds online cheaper than buying them locally?

It can be, particularly when an online retailer offers larger packets, bulk quantities, or free shipping. A local purchase may be cheaper for one or two packets because it avoids shipping and arrives immediately. Compare the final checkout total and the number of seeds included.

Where can I buy organic seeds online?

Johnny’s Selected Seeds, Botanical Interests, Territorial Seed Company, Southern Exposure Seed Exchange, Fedco, Renee’s Garden, Park Seed, and Select Seeds all offer organic options. Verify the individual product listing and look for certified-organic information; a retailer’s entire catalog is not necessarily organic.

How long do online-purchased seeds last?

Shelf life varies by crop and storage conditions. Keep packets cool, dry, and sealed, and check the lot information or germination test date when available. Fedco publishes lot-level germination results, but even a strong test result cannot guarantee performance after poor storage or unsuitable planting conditions.

The Bottom Line

For a dependable all-purpose order, start with Johnny’s Selected Seeds. Choose Baker Creek or Seed Savers Exchange for heirlooms, Botanical Interests for beginner-friendly instructions, True Leaf Market for microgreens and bulk seed, and Pinetree for low-cost home-garden packets. Regional shoppers should prioritize Territorial in the Pacific Northwest, Southern Exposure in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast, and Fedco in colder climates.

Before paying, compare the delivered cost, packet quantity, germination information, shipping timeline, and guarantee deadline. Those details—not the packet’s headline price—determine whether an online seed order is actually a bargain.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
