Egypt’s latest retrieved sugar-specific reserve figure is one year. Cairo Governorate’s official portal reported on 5 August 2026 that Cabinet spokesperson Mohamed El-Homsani confirmed the duration. A later government statement on 4 October stressed the importance of maintaining strategic reserves, including sugar, but did not give a sugar-specific duration.
How long will Egypt’s sugar reserves last?
The one-year figure is the latest specifically quantified official claim available here. Cairo Governorate’s portal reported that El-Homsani made the statement to the Middle East News Agency. The report did not publish a calculation method or define the stock and consumption measure behind “one year,” so the figure should be read as the official’s reported estimate, not as an independently verified calculation of national consumption coverage.
The October 2026 statement is newer, but it is not a new sugar-reserve duration: the State Information Service reported that securing safe reserves of strategic and essential commodities remained a government priority, without specifying how many months of sugar were held. The Presidency had similarly described sugar stocks as reassuring in April 2026, without a month figure.
What the reported price says—and does not say
The August report also said sugar at consumer supply outlets cost EGP 28 per kilogram. It compared that figure with more than EGP 50 per kilogram about two years earlier. These are figures reported for those outlets and dates; EGP 28 should not be treated as a current nationwide market price.

Why reserve figures from different years are not directly comparable
“Months of reserves” can refer to different stocks and demand measures. Earlier official reports illustrate the distinction:

These numbers describe different channels, periods, or denominators; they are not a continuous time series showing the same stock rising or falling. The 2025 subsidized-sugar figure, in particular, should not be substituted for a national reserve duration.

How USDA sugar estimates fit in
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service 2026 Sugar Annual provides market-year estimates and projections for production, imports, and stocks. Those agricultural accounting figures can help describe the sector, but they are not automatically equivalent to an official statement about strategic reserve months. Converting a stock estimate into months requires a matching consumption denominator and a clear definition of which stocks are included.
