The often-cited 9 million figure for Star Wars: Battlefront II refers to copies reportedly shipped during the game’s launch quarter—not a verified lifetime sales total. A contemporaneous report said EA had expected 10 million launch-quarter shipments, putting the reported figure one million below that expectation.
What does the 9 million figure mean?
In January 2018, GameSpot reported that EA confirmed to The Wall Street Journal that Star Wars: Battlefront II shipped 9 million copies during its launch quarter. The same report put EA’s modeled expectation at 10 million shipments. On that reported measure, the game fell one million shipments short of the expectation. GameSpot’s January 30, 2018 report

“Shipped” is the key word. The figure describes copies sent into distribution during a defined period; it does not establish how many copies customers ultimately bought, nor how many the game sold over its full lifetime. It is accurate to say the reported launch-quarter shipments were below EA’s stated expectation. It is not accurate to describe 9 million as the game’s verified total sales.
When did Battlefront II launch?
EA and Lucasfilm announced a worldwide launch date of November 17, 2017. The reported shipment figure therefore concerns the quarter in which the 2017 game launched, rather than a lifetime tally. EA and Lucasfilm’s launch announcement

Why shipments, sales and bookings are not interchangeable
A shipment figure and consumer sales answer different questions. Shipments track units distributed into the market; sell-through tracks units purchased by end customers. EA’s financial reporting also uses “net bookings,” which the company defines to include products and services sold digitally or physically sold in. That broader financial measure is not automatically a count of copies purchased by players. EA’s Q3 FY18 financial results
For a meaningful comparison, the metric and period have to match. A launch-quarter shipment figure cannot fairly be compared with another game’s lifetime consumer sales figure as though both measured the same thing.

What EA’s campaign statistic does—and does not—show
In its Q3 FY18 results, EA said nearly 70% of Battlefront II players engaged with the single-player campaign. That is a player-engagement measure, not a sales count, and it does not confirm or revise the reported 9 million shipments.

The cited contemporary report establishes a reported launch-quarter shipment figure and a reported expectation, but it does not establish a lifetime sales total. EA’s cited Q3 FY18 results release does not state a unit-sales figure. As a result, the 9 million number should be presented with its period and shipment basis, not as a current or all-time total.
