Neither step guarantees recovery of items that have already left your account.
What Steam will—and will not—do
Steam’s Item Restoration Policy says: “Steam Support does not restore items that have left accounts for any reason, including trades, market transactions, deletions, or gifting.” Steam explains that items may change hands multiple times before a support request arrives. Restoring them could mean duplicating an item or removing it from another user’s inventory.
That policy applies even when the item left after an account hijack. Steam distinguishes recovering access to an account from restoring its missing inventory: Support may help you regain control, but its published policy does not promise to return items.
Which situation applies?

If your Steam account was hijacked, secure it and recover access
Steam recommends securing the computer and the email account associated with Steam before recovering the account. A compromised email account can allow someone to compromise Steam again.

- Scan the computer for malware. Follow Steam’s stolen-account security instructions before resetting credentials.
- Change the password for the email account linked to Steam. Use the email provider’s official site and secure any other associated accounts that may be affected.
- Try Steam’s account self-recovery. If you cannot complete it, contact Steam Support through the stolen or hijacked account recovery flow. Steam says Support will verify ownership and recover the account if self-recovery fails.
- Provide ownership details. Steam recommends supplying proof that the account is yours and any previous login names or email addresses used on it.
- Review Steam security after regaining access. Check authorized devices, sign out everywhere if anything is unfamiliar, change your Steam password, and review the linked email and other associated accounts. Steam’s account security recommendations also advise entering your password only on official Steam websites and never sharing it.
Be wary of unsolicited messages claiming to be Steam Support, especially through chat services. Use Steam’s official support pages rather than links sent by strangers.
If a trade or Market transfer is still pending
Act promptly if Steam shows an item transaction as pending under a hold. Steam says compromised users can cancel pending transactions before the items are stolen. Its hold guidance describes holds of up to 15 days in specified circumstances, including when the Mobile Authenticator has not been active for the required period. Cancelling a held trade triggers a seven-day trading cooldown, according to Steam. These are transaction safeguards, not a route to reclaim an item after the transfer has completed.
A game refund is not an inventory-item refund
Steam’s standard refund rule for eligible game purchases is a request within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime. Steam says you may still submit a request outside those conditions for review, but the rule concerns eligible purchases—not stolen or missing inventory items. An unfamiliar payment is a billing question, separate from an item-restoration request. Steam recommends checking whether a household member or anyone with access to the payment method made the purchase, then reviewing your purchase history. If a household member made purchases without permission, contact Steam Support through its unknown charges guidance.
