What happened at Funcom?
On October 1, 2025, Funcom confirmed restructuring and redundancies. The company said it was redirecting internal resources toward new content and improvements for Dune: Awakening as the game moved from development to long-term live operation, while teams prepared for a major console release. Funcom said it could not yet determine the exact impact. PC Games Insider reported the statement; Game Developer also quoted Funcom’s announcement.
On October 6, The Outsiders founder and creative director David Goldfarb wrote that the studio would close and that employees at both The Outsiders and Funcom Stockholm had been affected by the layoffs. PC Gamer reported Goldfarb’s announcement.
Is The Outsiders shutting down?
Yes. Goldfarb said The Outsiders, the 10-year-old studio behind Metal: Hellsinger, would close. His announcement also said Funcom Stockholm employees had been affected, but it did not say that the entire Stockholm operation was closing. Those are separate claims: the reported closure was The Outsiders, while the scope of the impact in Stockholm was not specified.

How many people did Funcom lay off?
A final employee total is not established in the cited reporting. Funcom’s initial statement said the exact impact could not yet be determined, and Goldfarb did not give a headcount for the people affected at The Outsiders or Funcom Stockholm.
Funcom’s careers page currently describes the company as having over 300 employees across four studios, but that is a company-provided snapshot, not an audited post-layoff count or a measure of how many jobs were cut. Why did Funcom restructure?
Funcom’s stated reason was an operational shift: moving Dune: Awakening into ongoing live service while focusing resources on its content and improvements, and preparing for a console launch. The company called the game its “biggest release” in its 32-year history; that is Funcom’s characterization, not an independently measured ranking. Game Developer reported that Funcom said the game had sold more than one million copies as of June 2025, also attributing that figure to the company.
The later release milestone should not be confused with proof of what the restructuring caused. On September 17, 2026, publisher Bandai Namco said Dune: Awakening had entered console head start and would officially launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox on September 22. Its announcement also reported a peak of 189,000 concurrent Steam players; that is the publisher’s reported peak, not a current player count.
