Three weeks after opening, the young business had shipped more than 500 fossils, according to a contemporary GeekWire profile. That early figure captures the launch, not the company’s current sales.
From startup founder to fossil retailer
GeekWire’s Taylor Soper reported on December 19, 2013, that Heaton was packing orders in the basement of his home after Bad Pug Games, his previous startup, did not work out. Heaton had co-founded ActiveRain in 2004 and, by the time of the profile, had spent 16 years as a startup founder, CEO, and developer. He used money raised for Bad Pug Games to fund FossilEra. Heaton had long been interested in fossils, but initially hesitated to turn that interest into a job. “I didn’t want to mix my professional life with my hobby and end up corrupting what I like,” he told GeekWire. He also said, “If I tried to make money off of it, I thought I might hate doing it as a hobby.” The business emerged after his previous startup faltered, rather than from an assumption that a personal passion would automatically make a viable company.
What FossilEra sold at launch
The 2013 profile described FossilEra’s proposition as selling high-quality fossils and mineral specimens online. Its early listings included trilobites, fossil shark teeth, and ammonite minerals. GeekWire reported that the site had shipped more than 500 fossils to customers around the United States during its first three weeks. At the time, listed prices ranged from $6 to $2,695. Both figures belong to that launch period; they are not current sales or pricing information.

The first buyers were not all collectors. Heaton told GeekWire that some of the first 500 purchases were gifts for birthdays and holidays, suggesting that the store was reaching people shopping for someone else as well as fossil enthusiasts.
The work behind an online catalog of one-of-a-kind specimens
Unlike a shop selling repeatable units of the same mass-produced item, FossilEra had to source, assess, price, and describe individual specimens. Heaton ordered fossils from suppliers, received them at home, inspected them, and uploaded descriptions and photographs. He said suppliers around the world were part of the challenge: availability and responsiveness could constrain what the business could list.

Pricing was difficult because a unique specimen has no straightforward identical replacement to use as a benchmark. Heaton described the process this way: “It’s like real estate — you look for something comparable and base it off that.” The comparison reflects the practical problem of valuing distinctive items; it does not mean every specimen has a reliable comparable or that the 2013 prices represent today’s market.
Fieldwork was still part of the appeal for Heaton. “I love going out and collecting fossils and doing field work because it’s a treasure hunt,” he said. The retail operation gave that interest a commercial outlet while relying on a separate set of tasks—supplier coordination, inspection, photography, listing, and fulfillment—to make individual finds available to buyers.

What FossilEra says about its business today
FossilEra’s current About FossilEra page says the company was founded in 2013 in Monroe, Washington, and identifies Matt Heaton as its founder and CEO. The company reports that it has shipped more than 215,000 orders to over 110,000 customers in 100+ countries. Those are company-reported figures, not independently audited totals.
The current store lists fossils and mineral specimens alongside minerals and crystals, meteorites, dinosaur fossils and teeth, and floating frame display cases. Its homepage also reports more than 23,000 five-star reviews and states a 30-day return policy; these are company-published figures and terms that may change. A fossil display case is a practical accessory for a collector, but the store’s listing does not establish any particular third-party marketplace listing or affiliate arrangement.

FossilEra says it launched FossilEra Adventures in 2024 after acquiring Fossil Safari Quarry near Kemmerer, Wyoming. The company presents Fossil Lake Safari as a destination for fossil discovery, education, and exploration. These details describe the company’s current account of its history and offering, rather than a feature covered in the 2013 profile.
How to read the company’s authenticity policy
FossilEra’s Authenticity Guarantee is the retailer’s own policy, not an independent authentication of every specimen. The company says it guarantees authenticity, labels replicas separately, and discloses restoration or compositing in product descriptions. It also says buyers can receive a full refund if its representation of authenticity or restoration is inaccurate, and describes a 30-day return policy.
For a prospective buyer, the useful distinction is between a seller’s stated terms and outside verification. Read the individual listing for identification and any restoration disclosure, and review the seller’s written guarantee and return conditions before purchasing. FossilEra’s claims about its own products and policies should be understood as company statements.
