North America’s EV-battery factory boom is still real, but the headline numbers need sorting. A plant described as “announced” may never break ground; one listed as “in production” may still be installing equipment; and a factory designed for electric vehicles may be redirected toward hybrid or grid-storage batteries.
For investors, workers, local governments and taxpayers, the useful question is not simply how many gigafactories have been announced. It is which facilities are operating, which have firm construction commitments, which are being retooled, and which have stalled or disappeared.
What counts as a battery factory?
In this article, “battery factory” means a large-scale facility producing battery cells or important battery materials in the United States, Canada or Mexico. That is broader than a factory making finished battery packs and narrower than an automaker adding an EV assembly line.
Capacity is usually quoted in gigawatt-hours (GWh) per year. This is normally nameplate capacity: the amount a fully equipped plant is designed to produce annually. It is not a promise of actual output. Production can remain below nameplate capacity because of equipment delays, low yields, staffing problems, supply shortages, customer demand or a slow manufacturing ramp.

- WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
- PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
- CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
- SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
- GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
The International Energy Agency makes a useful distinction between existing capacity, committed capacity and announced capacity. Committed capacity generally means an existing facility or a project that has reached a final investment decision and has started, or is starting, construction. Announced projects sit at a much earlier and less certain stage.
North America’s buildout at a glance
The Dallas Federal Reserve’s tracker counted about a dozen operational U.S. gigafactories in early 2026 and more than 20 additional U.S. sites in various stages of construction. That is a U.S.-only count, not a North American total. Canada and Mexico need to be reviewed separately rather than added to the Dallas Fed figure automatically.
The factories are concentrated around established automotive regions in the Midwest and South. That location reflects more than access to customers. Battery plants also need large amounts of electricity, industrial land, specialized workers, chemical inputs, transportation links and—in many cases—state or federal incentives.
| Project status | What it usually means | How much confidence to place in projected capacity |
|---|---|---|
| Announced | A company has disclosed a proposal or location. | Low. Financing, permits and demand may still be unresolved. |
| Permitted or groundbreaking | The project has cleared some approvals or begun site work. | Still uncertain. Site work is not cell production. |
| Under construction | The building and manufacturing systems are being installed. | Moderate, but delays, redesigns and pauses remain possible. |
| Commissioning | Equipment is being tested and production is being qualified. | Higher, though output may be well below nameplate capacity. |
| Initial production | The facility has made or shipped early products. | Does not mean the plant is fully ramped. |
| Commercial or full-rate production | Regular output is being delivered at a meaningful scale. | Highest, but actual annual output may still vary. |
U.S. facilities that have reached production or commissioning
Toyota Battery Manufacturing North Carolina
Toyota began shipping batteries from its Liberty, North Carolina, facility in June 2025. The company lists 14 production lines, planned employment of 5,100 people and current investment of $13.9 billion. The site is intended to make batteries for hybrid, plug-in-hybrid and battery-electric vehicles.
That status needs a small but important qualification: initial shipments do not mean every phase is complete. Toyota has continued construction and equipment installation in stages. For local workers and investors, the project is best described as producing while expanding—not as a finished factory operating at its ultimate design capacity.
Ford BlueOval Battery Park Michigan
Ford’s Marshall, Michigan, plant was assembling full lithium-iron-phosphate, or LFP, prismatic cells in June 2026. Ford reported more than 500 employees and said the site remained on track to ship batteries in 2026. Its current employment goal is 1,700 jobs, lower than the 2,500 jobs cited in the original 2023 announcement.
Ford has also said some Michigan battery output will support residential energy storage. This matters because the site is not solely an EV project. LFP cells are less energy-dense than some nickel-based chemistries, but can offer cost and durability advantages that suit affordable vehicles and stationary storage.

Ultium Cells Tennessee
GM and LG Energy Solution are converting the Spring Hill, Tennessee, facility toward LFP batteries for energy-storage systems. Production was planned to begin in the second quarter of 2026, with roughly 700 laid-off workers expected to be recalled.

This is a retooling and end-market conversion, not a new block of EV-cell capacity. It also illustrates why a weaker EV market does not automatically make every battery plant irrelevant: factories can be redirected toward grid and residential storage if the equipment and economics make that possible.
Ultium Cells Lansing
GM said the Lansing, Michigan, facility was nearly complete in December 2024 and that LG Energy Solution would install equipment after GM sold its stake. Without a later confirmation of production, it should not automatically be labeled fully operational. “Nearly complete” describes construction progress, not verified commercial output.
Why the boom is changing direction
The original factory wave was built around a straightforward assumption: EV sales would rise rapidly and automakers would need large domestic supplies of cells. That assumption has become more complicated. U.S. EV battery deployment stagnated in 2025 and represented about 10% of global deployment, while battery storage accounted for one-third of U.S. battery deployment.
The response has been a shift toward LFP chemistry and stationary storage. More than 50 GWh of U.S. battery-manufacturing capacity was reallocated toward LFP batteries in 2025, with much of that shift aimed at storage rather than vehicles.
That does not mean the projects are interchangeable. A plant may need different equipment, customers, certifications and contracts to make storage products. Nor does it mean every underused EV facility can be economically rescued. It does mean that a factory’s original label—“EV battery plant”—may no longer describe its likely customer base.
Canada: production has begun, but not every proposal survived
NextStar Energy in Windsor
NextStar Energy’s Windsor, Ontario, facility began production in November 2025 and held its official grand opening on March 5, 2026. Ontario reported that the plant had produced more than one million cells, hired more than 1,300 workers and occupied a 4.23-million-square-foot facility.

It is Canada’s first commercial-scale advanced battery manufacturing facility. That makes older descriptions of NextStar as merely “under construction” outdated.
Honda’s postponed Ontario investment
Honda postponed its planned Canadian EV investment, which included a proposed battery plant and a retooled vehicle facility. The original plan called for as many as 240,000 vehicles annually when fully operational in 2028. That figure and date should not be treated as a current forecast.

Nouveau Monde Graphite broke ground in May 2026 on the Matawinie mine in Quebec, integrated with a battery-material plant in Bécancour. Graphite mining and processing can be strategically important to battery production, but it is not the same thing as a cell factory and should not be included in cell-capacity totals.
Mexico: vehicle investment is not cell manufacturing
Mexico should not currently be presented as having the same verified cell-factory construction boom as the United States and Canada.
Kia’s July 2026 announcement of a $649 million investment in Mexico concerns production of the EV3 at its existing Nuevo León plant and line adjustments. It is vehicle manufacturing, not evidence of a new standalone battery-cell factory.
Tesla’s proposed Monterrey “Gigafactory Mexico” should be labeled paused or proposed unless a new company or government confirmation establishes active construction. Tesla disclosed the location announcement in a 2024 filing, while later reporting described the project as paused. A public announcement is not proof that foundation work, equipment installation or cell production is underway.
Projects that demonstrate the risk of relying on announcements
Gotion in Big Rapids, Michigan
Michigan terminated the controversial Gotion project and sought to recover incentives after the planned Chinese-backed battery plant collapsed. It belongs in a canceled or defaulted category, not in a current list of planned capacity.

AESC in Florence County, South Carolina
AESC paused construction in June 2025 amid uncertainty over EV demand, federal incentives and tariffs. A partially built structure or a prior groundbreaking does not justify describing the site as active construction when work has been paused.
These cases matter financially. Announced factories can influence land prices, municipal borrowing, local tax expectations, supplier investment and household decisions about moving for a job that may not ultimately exist.
How incentives affect the economics
U.S. policy has supported both factory construction and domestic production. The Department of Energy’s Battery Manufacturing and Recycling Grants program has $3 billion available for demonstration projects, commercial-scale facilities, retrofits and retooling involving batteries, components and recycling.

Section 45X remains a production credit for qualifying U.S.-made battery components, electrode active materials and applicable critical minerals. But it is not an unrestricted permanent subsidy. Under the IRS schedule, eligible-component credits phase down for components sold after 2029: 75% in 2030, 50% in 2031, 25% in 2032 and zero after December 31, 2032. Restrictions involving prohibited foreign entities and material assistance also affect eligibility.
The manufacturing credit is separate from the consumer clean-vehicle tax credit, which ended after September 30, 2025. A factory may still receive support for domestic production even when a consumer can no longer claim the former federal purchase credit.
What the factory boom means for personal finances
- Do not budget around an announced job. Check for hiring activity, equipment installation, commissioning or verified shipments before treating a project as a dependable source of employment.
- Separate construction jobs from permanent jobs. A project may employ many contractors during construction but fewer workers once automated production is running.
- Check the chemistry and customer. A factory producing LFP cells for grid storage may create different jobs and supplier demand from a nickel-based EV-cell plant.
- Be cautious with local real estate predictions. Delays and cancellations can leave communities with infrastructure costs but fewer jobs and residents than expected.
- Look for the latest status, not the biggest projection. A company’s current workforce, production milestone and revised investment are more useful than a launch announcement’s maximum capacity.
A practical way to track projects
For U.S. sites, start with the Dallas Fed’s downloadable gigafactory data rather than relying only on its map. Then verify important changes against company releases, government records, permitting documents and credible reporting. For Canada and Mexico, build a separate project list because the U.S. tracker is not a North American census.

The numbers that should not be repeated without qualification
A frequently cited projection said North America could reach nearly 1,000 GWh of battery capacity by 2030. That was a January 2023 DOE projection based on announced projects, not a current count of operating or committed capacity. It should not be used as though all of that capacity is now funded, built or producing.
The better summary is more restrained: the United States has about a dozen operational gigafactories and more than 20 additional sites in construction stages according to the Dallas Fed’s early-2026 tracker, while Canada has reached commercial-scale cell production at NextStar and Mexico has fewer verified standalone cell-factory projects in the current record. The mix is also shifting from an exclusively EV-focused buildout toward hybrids, LFP cells and energy storage.
FAQ
How many gigafactories are operating in North America?
There is no single authoritative North American total using identical definitions. The Dallas Fed counted about a dozen operational U.S. gigafactories in early 2026, but its tracker excludes Canada and Mexico. NextStar Energy was producing cells in Windsor, Ontario, by November 2025. Counts depend on whether they include materials plants, pack assembly, storage facilities and plants still ramping production.
Is a gigafactory always an EV battery factory?
No. A gigafactory may produce batteries for hybrids, plug-in hybrids, EVs or stationary energy storage. Toyota’s North Carolina facility makes batteries for multiple vehicle types, while GM and LG are converting Tennessee capacity toward LFP batteries for energy-storage systems.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Does announced battery capacity equal actual production?
No. Announced capacity is a proposal, while nameplate capacity is the designed annual maximum of a facility. Actual output depends on financing, construction, equipment installation, manufacturing yields, staffing, customer demand and the speed of commissioning.
Which North American battery projects have been delayed or canceled?
Examples include Gotion’s canceled or defaulted Big Rapids, Michigan, project; AESC’s paused construction in South Carolina; Honda’s postponed Ontario EV-and-battery investment; and Tesla’s paused or proposed Monterrey project. Statuses can change, so each should be checked against the latest company or government confirmation.
The Bottom Line
The North American battery boom is becoming a filter-and-verification exercise rather than a simple count of announced gigafactories. The most credible projects have reached production, equipment commissioning or a documented construction milestone. Others have been retooled for LFP and energy storage, postponed or canceled. For financial decisions, treat GWh projections and job promises as estimates until a facility demonstrates physical progress and regular output.
