Danish payments startup Flatpay announced a €145 million funding round in November 2025 at a €1.5 billion private valuation, joining Europe’s fintech unicorn cohort. Since then, the company has reported more than 100,000 customers, and Adyen has announced a partnership to provide payment infrastructure. Flatpay sells card-payment services and point-of-sale tools to merchants, combining physical hardware with an unusually hands-on sales and onboarding model.
What happened in Flatpay’s funding round?
Flatpay announced the €145 million round on November 17, 2025, with AVP Growth and Smash Capital participating alongside existing investors. The company said the financing valued it at €1.5 billion; TechCrunch reported the equivalent at the time as about $1.75 billion. That is a private financing valuation, not a public-market capitalization or a price at which ordinary investors can necessarily buy shares. TechCrunch’s November 2025 report and Flatpay’s announcement describe the deal.
Flatpay said the round made it the fastest Danish company to reach unicorn status, doing so in just over three years. The company was founded in Copenhagen in 2022 by Sander Janca-Jensen, Rasmus Hellmund Carlsen, Peter Lüth, and Rasmus Busk. “The fact that we’ve hit unicorn status is a special feeling,” Janca-Jensen said in the company’s November 17 announcement.
What does Flatpay do?
Flatpay provides card-payment services and point-of-sale (POS) systems to small and medium-sized merchants. A merchant can use its payment terminal to accept card payments and its POS offer to manage sales-related operations. Flatpay’s product pages describe flat or fixed transaction pricing, daily payouts, merchant dashboards, and round-the-clock support; offers and pricing vary by market and configuration, so those features should not be read as one universal plan. The company’s terminal page names the PAX A920 Pro, while its POS page presents hardware and software together.

- With Square Terminal, you can ring up sales, accept payments, and print receipts, all with one device. Use it at the counter or ring up customers anywhere in your store.
- Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one low rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts.
- Process chip cards in just two seconds.
- Get your money as soon as the next business day.
- Use it cordlessly with the built-in battery, designed to last all day.
The sales model is more personal than a self-serve signup flow. TechCrunch reported that Flatpay representatives visit merchants, explain the pricing, demonstrate terminals, and help with onboarding. Flatpay’s own product pages describe in-person walkthroughs and on-site installation of hardware and software. That approach may suit businesses seeking help getting set up, while requiring a substantial field-sales and service operation as the company grows.
The customer segment is large: the European Commission says SMEs account for 99% of European businesses. That figure describes the broader business landscape, not Flatpay’s market share or the proportion of eligible merchants it serves. European Commission overview of SMEs.

How did Flatpay become a unicorn?
Flatpay’s valuation arrived alongside rapid growth figures, but the measures refer to different things and dates. In its November 2025 announcement, the company said it expected around €125 million in revenue for 2025. In a separate interview with TechCrunch, Janca-Jensen said Flatpay had crossed €100 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR) in October 2025 and was adding nearly €1 million of ARR per day. Revenue for a year and ARR are not interchangeable: ARR is a snapshot-based annualized measure of recurring revenue, not the same as revenue recognized over a calendar year.
Janca-Jensen told TechCrunch that the plan for 2026 was to grow ARR by 300% and finish the year between €400 million and €500 million. That was a management target in November 2025, not a verified result. TechCrunch also reported the company was unprofitable at the time of its article; that dated report does not establish Flatpay’s profitability in 2026. Flatpay’s growth since the 2025 round
The company’s reported customer base has expanded, but the figures are dated snapshots from different sources, not a continuously audited series.
| When | Reported scale | Source and context |
|---|---|---|
| April 2024 | More than 7,000 customers | TechCrunch’s November 2025 article cited this earlier company milestone. |
| November 2025 | More than 60,000 merchants | Flatpay’s funding announcement. |
| May 2026 | More than 100,000 customers across seven European markets | Flatpay’s company announcement; it also set a target of one million customers by 2029. |
The company described a six-market footprint in its 2025 materials; its May 2026 release described seven markets, including the Netherlands. Those counts reflect the dates of the respective announcements. Reported staffing figures also vary by source and date: Flatpay said it had 1,400 employees in November 2025, TechCrunch reported approximately 1,500 staffers that month, and Flatpay’s 2026 materials said it had more than 2,000 employees. What Adyen’s 2026 partnership means
On September 23, 2026, payments company Adyen announced a strategic partnership with Flatpay. Adyen said it would provide financial infrastructure and local acquiring while Flatpay retained its local merchant relationships. Local acquiring is the process of handling card transactions through acquiring arrangements in the relevant markets.
Adyen said the partnership gives Flatpay the capability to integrate embedded-finance products, including instant settlement, cash advances, business accounts, and card issuing. The announcement describes capabilities, not confirmation that every product has launched or is available to merchants. Tobias Lindh, Adyen’s Country Manager Nordics & Baltics, said SMBs are looking for “simplicity, reliability, and speed in their payments.” Adyen’s September 23, 2026 announcement.

What merchants and investors should take from the story
- For merchants: Flatpay’s proposition is a bundled merchant relationship—payments, terminal or POS tools, and in-person assistance—rather than simply a piece of hardware. Check the terms and pricing for the specific country and configuration.
- For investors tracking fintech: the €1.5 billion figure is a private-round valuation, and the growth figures above are company statements or interview-reported metrics, not audited financial results.
- For readers following the expansion: the May 2026 customer milestone and Adyen’s September partnership are later developments than the November 2025 funding announcement; the million-customer goal and embedded-finance examples remain targets or capabilities as described in those announcements.
