The unit covers 165 workers and will join CWA Local 6215 in Richardson, Texas. CWA said Microsoft recognized the union. The announcement established union representation—not a first contract or specific workplace protections.
What happened at id Software?
Workers at id Software, the Microsoft-owned studio behind the Doom series, organized with CWA. The union announcement says a strong majority supported representation, either by signing union cards or by registering support through an online portal. CWA says Microsoft recognized the union. CWA’s announcement identifies the unit as 165 workers represented by CWA Local 6215.
The 165 figure is the size of the union unit, not the number of yes votes. CWA did not publish a for-or-against tally in its announcement. Engadget reported that the vote was not unanimous. Separately, Aftermath described the effort as involving 165 of roughly 185 employees; that workforce estimate is approximate, not an official headcount.
What does “wall-to-wall” mean?
“Wall-to-wall” describes a union unit that spans job functions rather than covering only one occupational group. CWA said the id Software unit includes developers, artists, programmers, and more. It does not mean every employee voted for the union: the reported support was a strong majority, and secondary reporting says the vote was not unanimous.

Did Microsoft recognize the union?
Yes. CWA said Microsoft recognized the union after workers organized. Recognition establishes the union as the workers’ representative; it does not mean a contract has been negotiated or that particular terms are already in effect.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What do id Software workers want?
Workers have described the union as a way to have a collective voice in decisions affecting their work. CWA quoted id Software producer and organizing committee member Andrew Willis criticizing unilateral workplace changes handed down by industry executives. Senior VFX artist Caroline Pierrot also described the value of having a voice in decisions affecting workers and coworkers. Aftermath’s reporting discussed remote work, benefits, and responsible AI use as worker concerns.
These are priorities raised in connection with organizing, not confirmed contract provisions. The available announcements and reporting establish the union’s formation and intent to bargain with Microsoft, but do not establish that workers have secured a first contract or agreements on remote work, AI, benefits, pay, or other terms.
