Sometimes. Some colleges award credit or advanced standing for qualifying International Baccalaureate (IB) results, but the rules vary by school, subject, exam level and score. Completing the full IB Diploma may also affect eligibility. Check each college’s current policy: recognition of IB results does not guarantee admission.
What college credit and advanced standing mean
College credit recognizes prior coursework and may count toward degree requirements. Advanced standing can let a student skip an introductory or required course and move into a more advanced class. For a given IB result, a college may award credit, placement, both or neither.
Why IB credit policies differ
Universities set their own rules, so a policy at one school cannot establish what another will award. The IB recognition database gives examples of the variation:
- UC Berkeley: The database describes units for qualifying Higher Level (HL) exams, with additional units for students who complete the IB Diploma and meet its score condition.
- UT Austin: Its guidelines and department-set score requirements govern course credit and placement. The policy can distinguish full-diploma students from students who took qualifying individual HL exams.
- University of Florida: The database reports credit for scores of 4 or higher, with up to 45 test credits counting toward a baccalaureate degree.
These are examples, not a general rule or a substitute for the universities’ current policies. The IB notes that additional restrictions may apply and advises students to verify details with each institution. IB university recognition database

For each college, search its current IB credit or placement policy. The IB recognition database lets users search institutional policies and US credit or advanced-standing policies by course and level. The IB says the database covers more than 2,000 universities overall and about 800 US universities for credit or advanced standing; those figures are from its page last updated 9 March 2026. - Identify the outcome: Check whether the college offers credit, advanced standing or both for IB results.
- Match the subject and level: Confirm which subjects qualify and whether the rule applies to Standard Level (SL), Higher Level (HL) or both.
- Check scores and diploma status: Find the minimum exam score and whether completing the full IB Diploma changes eligibility.
- Review the course match: Look up the course equivalency and whether awarded credit satisfies a requirement for your intended degree.
- Read restrictions: Check for credit caps, enrollment conditions or other limits.
- Confirm with the college: Verify the current rule with the university, since policies can change and additional restrictions may apply.
Admission is a separate decision
Credit or placement recognition does not mean a student will be admitted. Conversely, a university without a published IB recognition policy may still accept applicants with IB credentials. Check admissions criteria separately from credit and placement rules. IB university admission guidance
