No—not in the 2019 transaction. Viacom merged into CBS Corporation, and CBS Corporation survived as the legal entity. The combined company became ViacomCBS, later renamed Paramount Global. Skydance subsequently merged with Paramount Global in 2025, and an October 2026 company announcement described the group as Skydance after it completed an acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery.

What happened when Viacom and CBS combined in 2019?

On December 4, 2019, Viacom Inc. merged into CBS Corporation. CBS Corporation was the surviving company, and the combined company changed its name to ViacomCBS Inc. Paramount Skydance Corporation’s 2026 Form 10-K states this sequence directly in its corporate history (2026 Form 10-K).

That legal structure is why “Paramount bought CBS” is misleading as a description of the 2019 deal. Paramount Global was not yet the name of the combined company, and CBS Corporation—not a company called Paramount—was the surviving entity.

How did ViacomCBS become Paramount?

The combined company was called ViacomCBS after the 2019 merger. In 2022, ViacomCBS changed its name to Paramount Global, according to the company’s 2026 Form 10-K (2026 Form 10-K). The name change did not undo the earlier merger; it was a later corporate-name change.

What changed when Skydance joined the company?

  1. July 24, 2025 — regulatory approval: The Federal Communications Commission announced approval of Skydance’s acquisition of Paramount Global and subsidiaries. Its decision addressed transfers of broadcast licenses and authorizations, including those held by the ultimate parent of CBS’s owned-and-operated broadcast stations (FCC announcement).
  2. August 7, 2025 — merger completed: Paramount announced that Skydance Media and Paramount Global had completed their merger, creating Paramount, a Skydance Corporation. The announcement described CBS as part of the company’s portfolio (Paramount merger announcement).

These are separate milestones: the FCC announced regulatory approval in July, while the companies announced completion in August. The later transaction involved Skydance and Paramount Global; it was not the 2019 Viacom-CBS merger.

What is CBS’s place in the company now?

Company naming has changed again. In an announcement dated October 6, 2026, Skydance said it had completed its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery and described the resulting combined company as Skydance, with CBS among its television assets (October 6, 2026 announcement). This is the latest ownership description located as of October 8, 2026; it should be read as a dated company announcement, not as a timeless name for the group.

Why do people say Paramount bought CBS?

The shorthand folds several events into one phrase: the 2019 merger of Viacom into CBS Corporation, the later ViacomCBS-to-Paramount Global name change, and Skydance’s 2025 merger with Paramount Global. Keeping the dates and legal entities separate makes the history clearer: CBS survived the 2019 combination, the resulting company later adopted the Paramount Global name, and Skydance subsequently merged with that company.

For context on Viacom’s earlier history, Paramount Global’s 2024 agreement announcement quoted Shari Redstone as saying that her father acquired Viacom in 1987 and began assembling and growing businesses later known as Paramount Global. That statement concerns the earlier Viacom history, not the 2019 CBS merger (2024 agreement announcement).
