MM/YY is the card’s expiration month and two-digit year. CVC is a card-verification code that a checkout may ask for when you pay online or place an order by phone. It is not your PIN or card number, and its location varies by card.
What do MM and YY mean?
MM/YY is the card’s expiration date, written as a two-digit month followed by a two-digit year. For example, a date shown as 08/28 means August 2028. Enter the month and year as printed on the card; a checkout form may reject an expiration date that has already passed.
What is the CVC on a credit card?
CVC means card verification code. Payment brands use different names for similar codes, including CVC2, CVV2, CID and CAV2. A merchant may request the code during a card-not-present purchase—such as an online, mail-order or telephone transaction—to help verify that the customer has the card. PCI Security Standards Council describes this common use in its card-verification FAQ.
The code is a verification aid, not a guarantee that a transaction is legitimate or safe. It is also different from your PIN, which you use in situations such as authorizing certain in-person transactions or accessing an ATM.

Where can you find the CVC?
The code is printed on the front or back of a payment card, depending on the card design. Many cards have a three-digit code; American Express uses a four-digit code, according to Visa’s card-input guidance. Do not assume every card brand or issuer puts it in the same place. Check both sides of the card, and if you still cannot find it, use your issuer’s official contact method for guidance.
How should you handle a CVC request?
- Enter the code only when a checkout or other payment process you trust requests it.
- Check that you are using the intended merchant’s genuine website or app before entering card details.
- Do not confuse the CVC with your PIN or the long card number.
- If a card-on-file service asks you to provide the code again, distinguish that request from the merchant storing the code: PCI rules prohibit retaining it after authorization.
Can a merchant save your CVC?
No. PCI Security Standards Council classifies card-verification codes as sensitive authentication data. Merchants must not store the code after authorization, even in encrypted form; the rule also applies to card-on-file and recurring transactions.
