Deliveries are scheduled to start in 2029. The agreement also includes options for up to 20 more aircraft, which are not part of the firm order.
What Delta ordered—and what is not included in the firm order
Delta announced the deal on January 27, 2026, and Airbus published its announcement the following day. The aircraft mix is:

Delta says the agreement combines an incremental order with the exercise of 10 options and adds 20 future widebody options. The SEC filing describes an option to purchase up to 20 additional widebody aircraft. Those options are potential future purchases, not 20 more firm aircraft today. Neither Delta nor the filing gives a final delivery year for all 31 aircraft; the announced schedule says deliveries begin in 2029. (Delta announcement; SEC filing)
How the two aircraft fit Delta’s network
Delta frames the order as a way to renew its fleet while expanding international service and premium capacity. Its announcement points to the A350’s extended range for growth in Asia, Africa, the Middle East and the South Pacific, naming Taipei, Melbourne, Hong Kong and Riyadh as examples. The company does not say which routes will receive these specific aircraft.

The range figures are Airbus-stated design ranges, not guarantees about Delta routes or operating conditions. They help explain the different network roles described by the companies, but do not by themselves establish which aircraft is more economical for a particular route. (Airbus announcement)
What the order could mean for Delta’s fleet
Airbus projects that, after the order is delivered, Delta will have 55 A330neo aircraft and 79 A350 aircraft. These are future fleet totals conditional on delivery, not current counts. Delta says the projected A350 total includes 20 A350-1000s it expected to begin receiving in early 2027; the 15 aircraft in this new order are A350-900s. The two variants should not be conflated.

Delta also announced long-term Rolls-Royce maintenance agreements for the aircraft. The engine and support arrangements are part of the operating plan, but the announcement does not quantify maintenance savings.
Cabin plans and Delta’s financial rationale
Delta says the new widebodies are intended to support international growth, fleet renewal, fuel efficiency, margins and additional premium seating. The company says they will feature Delta One Suites, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort and Delta Main, along with Delta Sync seatback entertainment and Wi-Fi. These are Delta’s announced plans for new widebodies in coming years; the release does not provide aircraft-by-aircraft cabin layouts.

Delta CEO Ed Bastian said the aircraft would help the airline serve expanded long-haul markets and elevate premium offerings. Those statements describe the company’s aims, not a forecast that demand, margins or service levels will necessarily improve.
Airbus says the A330neo and A350 families offer a 25% advantage in fuel burn, CO2 emissions and operating cost compared with previous-generation competitor aircraft. That is a manufacturer’s family-level comparison, not an independently verified saving for Delta or a quantified result from this order. Delta says the purchase fits within previously announced capital expenditure and capacity targets. The available announcements do not state the order price or provide an independent estimate of operating savings.

What travelers and investors can take from the announcement
- For travelers: The order signals planned growth and fleet renewal, but it does not identify specific routes, launch dates for service, or a schedule for cabin installation on individual aircraft.
- For investors: The firm commitment is 31 aircraft, with delivery beginning in 2029. The additional 20 are options, not committed aircraft.
