Cloud Market Share Leaders

AWS, Microsoft and Google Cloud lead Synergy Research Group’s Q1 2026 cloud-infrastructure estimate, but market-share figures vary by definition. Learn how the broad ranking differs from Gartner’s public-IaaS figures and what investors should consider.

AWS is the largest global cloud-infrastructure provider, followed by Microsoft and Google Cloud. In Synergy Research Group’s Q1 2026 estimate, their shares were 28%, 21% and 14%, respectively; the top three represented 67% of public-cloud IaaS and PaaS spending.

Those figures are not interchangeable with narrower public-IaaS rankings. For investors and anyone comparing providers, check the market definition and reporting period before comparing market-share percentages.

Global cloud market share leaders

Synergy Research Group estimated the worldwide cloud-infrastructure market at approximately $128.6 billion in quarterly revenue in Q1 2026, up 35% from a year earlier. Its category includes infrastructure as a service (IaaS), platform as a service (PaaS) and hosted private-cloud services.

Rank Provider Worldwide share What is being measured
1 Amazon Web Services (AWS) 28% Cloud infrastructure services
2 Microsoft, primarily Azure 21% Cloud infrastructure services
3 Google Cloud 14% Cloud infrastructure services

Synergy says the top three represented 67% of public-cloud IaaS and PaaS spending. That figure describes a narrower portion of the market than the broad cloud-infrastructure category, which also includes hosted private cloud. The reported shares in the table sum to 63%, but that sum should not be described as the Big Three’s share of the whole current market.

1. Amazon Web Services: the largest cloud provider

AWS held the largest share in Synergy’s Q1 2026 estimate, at 28%. Its established cloud platform offers services across computing, storage, databases, networking, analytics and artificial intelligence.

For Amazon investors, AWS is important because it is a major profit contributor even though Amazon reports it as one segment of a larger company. AWS’s market leadership does not mean its share is fixed: Synergy’s comparable estimate put AWS at 29% in Q3 2025, before the reported share declined to 28% in Q1 2026.

2. Microsoft Azure: the second-largest provider

Microsoft ranked second, with a 21% share in the same Synergy estimate. Azure benefits from Microsoft’s existing relationships with businesses, its enterprise software ecosystem and demand for cloud-based AI services.

Microsoft does not report Azure as a completely separate financial segment. Its Intelligent Cloud reporting segment includes more than Azure, so that segment’s revenue should not be presented as standalone Azure market share. Synergy’s provider estimate is a market-research calculation that primarily reflects Azure-related infrastructure activity.

  • From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.

3. Google Cloud: third globally and growing quickly

Google Cloud held 14% of the broad cloud-infrastructure market in Q1 2026, placing it third behind Microsoft. Synergy says Google Cloud has been growing faster than AWS and Microsoft in the current market cycle.

Google Cloud’s position gives Alphabet exposure to enterprise cloud spending and AI infrastructure. However, market-share growth and shareholder returns are not the same thing. Investors still need to examine operating margins, capital spending, customer concentration and the cost of building AI capacity.

A separate public-IaaS market-share ranking

Gartner’s latest publicly available estimate uses a narrower definition and an earlier period. Its report, published in August 2025, covers calendar year 2024 public-IaaS revenue rather than Synergy’s broader quarterly infrastructure market.

Rank Provider 2024 public-IaaS revenue Share
1 Amazon $64.8 billion 37.7%
2 Microsoft $41.1 billion 23.9%
3 Google $15.5 billion 9.0%
4 Alibaba Group $12.4 billion 7.2%
5 Huawei $7.1 billion 4.1%

Gartner estimated the 2024 worldwide public-IaaS market at $171.8 billion, an increase of 22.5% from 2023. The five largest providers accounted for 82.1% of that narrower market.

Why cloud market-share percentages differ

There is no single universally accepted “cloud market.” Reports may count different services, customers, geographies and time periods.

  • Broad infrastructure market: Synergy includes IaaS, PaaS and hosted private cloud services.
  • Public IaaS: Gartner’s figure focuses on infrastructure services delivered through public cloud providers.
  • Company revenue: Financial statements may combine cloud with software, consulting or other services.
  • Regional market: Alibaba and Huawei can be more significant in some markets than their global ranking suggests.
  • Usage or traffic: Network traffic, website usage and cloud revenue measure different things and should not be substituted for one another.

Consequently, AWS’s 28% Synergy share for Q1 2026 and its 37.7% Gartner public-IaaS share for 2024 are not contradictory. They describe different markets and reporting periods.

How the market is changing

Synergy’s recent estimates indicate gradual share movement toward Microsoft and Google while AWS remains first. In Q3 2025, the comparable reported shares were 29% for AWS, 20% for Microsoft and 13% for Google. By Q1 2026, they were 28%, 21% and 14%.

The next tier includes Oracle and Alibaba, along with AI-focused “neocloud” providers. Synergy identifies CoreWeave as the largest neocloud provider, while Crusoe, Nebius and Lambda are among the other rapidly growing providers. These companies focus heavily on supplying specialized computing capacity, particularly for AI workloads, but they do not yet approach the scale of the Big Three.

What market share means for personal investors

Market leadership can be useful context, but it is not a complete investment thesis. A larger share may provide scale, purchasing power and customer familiarity. It can also attract regulatory scrutiny and require substantial spending on data centers, chips and electricity.

When comparing Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet or smaller cloud companies, consider:

  1. Growth: Is cloud revenue expanding faster or slower than the overall market?
  2. Profitability: Are cloud margins improving, and does the company disclose them clearly?
  3. Capital intensity: How much is being spent on data centers, networking and AI accelerators?
  4. Customer economics: Are customers increasing their usage and renewing contracts?
  5. Concentration risk: Does the company depend on a small number of large customers or AI firms?
  6. Valuation: Does the stock price already assume continued market-share gains?

For a diversified personal portfolio, cloud exposure may already exist through broad-market index funds. Buying an individual cloud leader adds company-specific risk, including weaker growth, lower margins, regulation and heavy infrastructure spending.

Common mistakes when quoting cloud rankings

  1. Calling Google the second-largest provider. Microsoft ranks second in the global infrastructure estimates discussed here.
  2. Using 37.7% as AWS’s current overall share. That is Gartner’s 2024 public-IaaS figure, not the latest broad quarterly estimate.
  3. Calling 63% the Big Three’s share of the current broad market. The table’s Q1 2026 broad-market shares sum to 63%; Synergy separately reports that the top three represented 67% of public-cloud IaaS and PaaS spending. Its 63% Big Three figure referred to Q3 2025.
  4. Treating Microsoft’s Intelligent Cloud revenue as Azure revenue. The segment includes businesses beyond Azure.
  5. Assuming market share equals profitability. Revenue leadership does not automatically produce the highest margins or best stock performance.

Sources and dates

The broad quarterly figures come from Synergy Research Group’s Q1 2026 cloud-infrastructure estimate, published April 29, 2026. The narrower IaaS figures come from Gartner’s worldwide public-IaaS estimate for 2024, published August 6, 2025. Because providers report financial data differently, third-party estimates should be read alongside each company’s filings.

Does cloud market leadership make a stock a good investment?

Not by itself. Investors should also assess growth, margins, capital spending, valuation, customer concentration and the risks of investing in an individual company.

The Bottom Line

AWS remains the global cloud-infrastructure leader, followed by Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud. In Synergy’s Q1 2026 estimate, their reported shares were 28%, 21% and 14%; the top three represented 67% of public-cloud IaaS and PaaS spending.
