Editor’s note: This is a historical guide to the best Bitcoin wallets available in 2022, not a current buying list. Wallet software, hardware models, fees, and support policies have changed since then. The shortlist below reflects how these products were positioned in 2022, followed by a section explaining the important changes.
The right wallet depends mainly on how much Bitcoin you hold, how often you spend it, and whether you need privacy, simplicity, or control over your keys. A phone wallet is convenient for small everyday balances. A hardware wallet is generally more appropriate for substantial savings. A desktop wallet can offer more control, but it also requires more responsibility.
What makes a Bitcoin wallet “best”?
A Bitcoin wallet does not literally contain your coins. The Bitcoin remains recorded on the blockchain; the wallet manages the private keys and helps you create and sign transactions. Whoever controls the relevant private keys controls the ability to spend the Bitcoin.
That distinction matters when comparing wallets. A custodial exchange account may be easy to use, but the exchange controls the keys. The wallets in this guide are primarily self-custodial, meaning you are responsible for the recovery phrase or private keys.

- Convenience: How quickly can you send and receive Bitcoin?
- Privacy: Does the wallet expose transaction history or encourage address reuse?
- Bitcoin support: Is Bitcoin the main focus, or just one asset among many?
The best Bitcoin wallets for 2022
| Wallet | Best for | Main strength | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ledger Nano X | Hardware-wallet users wanting broad asset support | Offline key protection, mobile connectivity, and Ledger software integration | Costs more than a software wallet and requires trusting the device ecosystem |
| Trezor Model T | Hardware-wallet users who prefer a touchscreen | Touchscreen operation and open-source positioning | Premium price and more involved setup than a phone wallet |
| Exodus | Beginners using multiple assets | Friendly interface and simple onboarding | Not fully open source according to 2022 reviews |
| Wasabi | Bitcoin users focused on desktop privacy | Open-source, Bitcoin-only design with CoinJoin | Privacy tools require careful use and are not a guarantee of anonymity |
| Electrum | Experienced Bitcoin desktop users | Lightweight, established, Bitcoin-only wallet | Interface and security choices can be intimidating for beginners |
| BlueWallet | Mobile Bitcoin and Lightning use | On-chain wallet, watch-only support, multisig, and Lightning features | Lightning setup and backup require extra attention |
1. Ledger Nano X: best premium hardware wallet
The Ledger Nano X was one of the strongest all-around hardware-wallet choices in 2022. It kept signing keys on a dedicated device rather than on a phone or computer, supported Bitcoin alongside many other assets, and connected to mobile devices. Ledger’s companion software was known as Ledger Live at the time.
The Nano X made sense for someone building a long-term portfolio who still wanted to manage several assets from one interface. The trade-off was price and complexity: you must protect the recovery phrase, check transactions on the device, and buy the hardware through a legitimate channel.
It is also important to understand what “offline storage” means. The Bitcoin is not stored inside the Nano X. The device protects the keys used to authorize transactions and signs those transactions without exposing the keys to the connected computer.
2. Trezor Model T: best touchscreen hardware wallet
The Trezor Model T stood out in 2022 for its touchscreen and its open-source software and hardware positioning. Entering a PIN and confirming transaction details directly on the device was more comfortable than relying entirely on a computer or phone.
Recommended Free Tools
A typical Model T setup involved initializing the device, recording the recovery backup, setting a PIN, and then using Trezor Suite to manage Bitcoin. The recovery backup was the critical component: if the device was lost or damaged, the backup could restore access. If the backup was exposed, an attacker could potentially spend the funds.
For receiving Bitcoin, the safer procedure was to open Trezor Suite, choose Bitcoin, select Receive, show the full address, and compare the address displayed on the computer with the address shown on the Trezor itself. Do not assume that an address copied from an untrusted screen is correct.

- Effortlessly build your crypto portfolio via the all in one Ledger Wallet app: buy, sell, send, receive, swap, stake and more across popular blockchains. 15,000+ coins & tokens in a single dashboard. Keep a close eye on the market. Compare service providers. Track performance. Get timely alerts. Build your portfolio with confidence.
3. Exodus: best for beginners and multiple assets
Exodus was designed for users who wanted a relatively approachable wallet for Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Its interface was easier to understand than many technically oriented desktop wallets, making it a reasonable starting point for someone moving away from an exchange.
The important limitation was that Exodus was not fully open source according to the 2022 TechRadar review. That does not automatically make it unsafe, but it gives users less ability to independently inspect every part of the software.
Exodus used a 12-word secret key as the wallet’s recovery mechanism. Saving a copy of the app, synchronizing a device, or relying on a cloud backup was not a substitute for recording that phrase securely. Exodus stated that it could not recover a wallet if the secret key was lost.
4. Wasabi: best for desktop Bitcoin privacy
Wasabi was a Bitcoin-only, open-source, non-custodial wallet focused on CoinJoin. CoinJoin combines inputs from multiple users in a coordinated transaction, making straightforward blockchain analysis more difficult. This can improve privacy, but it does not make transactions automatically anonymous.
Privacy can be weakened by address reuse, linking a wallet to an exchange account, network metadata, later spending patterns, or careless handling of change. Treat CoinJoin as one privacy technique, not a magic eraser for the transaction history.
Wasabi’s privacy workflow also required understanding the security trade-off. CoinJoin required hot keys on the computer and could not be performed directly from a hardware wallet under the current documentation. Users therefore had to balance transaction privacy against the stronger key isolation offered by cold storage.

- More than just crypto: confirm your device is authentic with Genuine Check, manage all your logins with Ledger Security Key, detect common scams with Transaction Check and more.
- Industry-defining security: battle-tested by the Donjon's white hat hackers, protected by the Secure Element, and powered by Ledger OS.
- Connect effortlessly with Ledger Wallet: pair your secure Ledger signer with the all in one Ledger Wallet crypto app to manage thousands of digital assets across multiple devices and accounts with Ledger Sync from a single, secure dashboard.
- Playful, user-friendly design: monitor the market, compare rates and Clear Sign all transactions on the secure 2.8'' anti-glare, scratch-resistant touchscreen.
- This is what security feels like: Ledger touchscreen signers all come with a private, offline, PIN-protected backup, Ledger Recovery Key, to never lose access to your assets.
5. Electrum: best lightweight Bitcoin desktop wallet
Electrum was one of the most established Bitcoin-only wallets in 2022. It used simplified payment verification rather than requiring users to download the entire blockchain, so it was substantially lighter than running a full Bitcoin node.
Electrum supported Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android. It appealed to users who wanted more control than a beginner-oriented wallet offered, including options for fee management, hardware-wallet connections, multisignature arrangements, and watch-only wallets.
Its main weakness was the learning curve. A new user could make an avoidable mistake by downloading a fake copy, mishandling the seed, choosing an unsuitable fee, or restoring the wrong wallet type. Download Electrum only from electrum.org. The official site recommends verifying downloaded files with GPG signatures.
For example, the current official download page lists Electrum 4.7.2 and provides commands such as:
wget https://download.electrum.org/4.7.2/Electrum-4.7.2.tar.gz
wget https://download.electrum.org/4.7.2/Electrum-4.7.2.tar.gz.asc
gpg --verify Electrum-4.7.2.tar.gz.asc
Those commands are included as a current reference, not as evidence that Electrum 4.7.2 was the 2022 release. Always use the version and verification instructions on the official site rather than copying an old download link.
6. BlueWallet: best mobile Bitcoin wallet for 2022
BlueWallet combined a straightforward mobile Bitcoin wallet with features such as watch-only wallets, multisig support, hardware-wallet compatibility, and Lightning functionality. It was a good fit for someone who wanted to monitor or spend Bitcoin from a phone without using an exchange account as the wallet.
Rank #4
- More control - this Backup Pack enables you to securely own and manage your crypto with Bluetooth or Cable connectivity
To create an on-chain wallet in the app, the documented path was:
- From the home screen, tap Add now or the + icon.
- Choose Bitcoin.
- Select Create.
BlueWallet offered several address formats, including SegWit HD (BIP84 Bech32 – Native), SegWit HD (BIP49 PS2H – Wrapped), and SegWit (P2SH). The P2SH option created a single-address wallet and was described by BlueWallet as worse for privacy. Compatibility with an exchange or older wallet can vary, so confirm the receiving address type before sending.
Each BlueWallet wallet needed its own backup. To export or back up one, open the wallet, tap the ⋯ menu, and choose Export/Backup. Backing up the app or phone did not necessarily back up every wallet.
How to choose between them
| Your situation | Most suitable 2022 choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You hold a significant long-term balance | Ledger Nano X or Trezor Model T | Dedicated hardware protects signing keys from ordinary phone and computer malware. |
| You are new to self-custody | Exodus, for a small balance | The interface is approachable, but you still need to protect the 12-word key. |
| You want desktop privacy tools | Wasabi | Bitcoin-only design and CoinJoin support, with important privacy limitations. |
| You want a technical desktop wallet | Electrum | Lightweight, established, and configurable. |
| You make small mobile payments | BlueWallet | Convenient on-chain access and, at the time, Lightning functionality. |
What changed after 2022?
This section prevents the historical recommendations from being mistaken for a current shopping guide.
- Ledger: The Nano X remains a Ledger product, but the software is now branded Ledger Wallet in current Bitcoin product material rather than only Ledger Live. Ledger also offers the optional paid Ledger Recover service. Recover requires explicit consent on the device and identity verification; it is not the same as making a normal offline seed backup.
- Ledger Nano S: The original Nano S should not be treated as a current entry-level recommendation. It was replaced by the Nano S Plus and is a legacy model.
- Trezor: Trezor Model One and Model T are no longer sold through Trezor’s own store as of January 8, 2026. They remain usable, with maintenance and security-support periods published by Trezor. Trezor’s newer product line includes the Safe 3, Safe 5, and Safe 7. These should not be retroactively inserted into a 2022 ranking.
- BlueWallet Lightning: BlueWallet’s hosted
lndhub.ioservice was shut down on May 31, 2023. On-chain wallets were not affected. Current Lightning use requires connecting BlueWallet to an LNDHub instance, meaning the old description of a turnkey BlueWallet-hosted Lightning wallet is outdated. - Wasabi: Current Wasabi documentation says version 2.2.0.0 removed the coordinator fee. It also says CoinJoin requires hot keys on the computer and cannot currently be performed directly from a hardware wallet.
- Electrum: Electrum remains active. Its official site currently lists version 4.7.2 and continues to warn users to download only from electrum.org and verify signatures.
Common wallet mistakes
Losing the recovery phrase
A self-custodial provider generally cannot reset your wallet. Write the recovery phrase down, keep it away from cameras and cloud storage, and consider how your family would access it in an emergency. Never type it into a website, email, form, or unsolicited support chat.
Keeping too much on a phone or computer
Hot wallets are connected to devices that can be lost, infected, or compromised. A sensible arrangement is to keep a relatively small spending balance in a mobile or desktop wallet and use a hardware wallet for larger savings.

Buying counterfeit hardware
Buy hardware wallets from the manufacturer or an authorized reseller. A counterfeit device may contain a recovery phrase known to an attacker or modified firmware. If a device arrives with a prewritten seed phrase, do not use it.
Sending to the wrong address type or network
Bitcoin addresses may begin with 1, 3, bc1, or bc1p, depending on the address format. Not every older exchange or wallet handles every format equally. Start with a small test transaction when compatibility is uncertain.
Assuming open source guarantees safety
Open-source code is useful because it permits inspection, but it does not prove that the software downloaded is genuine or that the executable matches the published source. Download from the official project, verify signatures where available, and keep the device secure.
FAQ
What was the best Bitcoin wallet in 2022?
There was no single best choice. Ledger Nano X and Trezor Model T were strong hardware-wallet options, Exodus suited beginners using several assets, Wasabi emphasized Bitcoin privacy, Electrum offered a lightweight technical desktop wallet, and BlueWallet was convenient for mobile Bitcoin use.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Are these still the best Bitcoin wallets today?
Not necessarily. This is a historical 2022 guide. Ledger products and Electrum remain active, but BlueWallet’s hosted Lightning service ended in 2023, the original Ledger Nano S is legacy hardware, and Trezor’s Model One and Model T are no longer sold directly by Trezor as of January 8, 2026.
Can a Bitcoin wallet recover my funds if I lose my phone?
Only if you still have the wallet’s recovery phrase or another valid backup, such as the required multisignature keys. Losing the phone is usually manageable; losing the recovery phrase can permanently prevent access because self-custodial wallet providers generally cannot restore it.
Is a hardware wallet completely offline?
The hardware device protects the private signing keys and can sign transactions without revealing those keys to the connected computer. The Bitcoin itself remains recorded on the blockchain, and the wallet may connect to software or a network when you check balances or broadcast transactions.
The Bottom Line
For the 2022 market, the Ledger Nano X and Trezor Model T were the strongest choices for larger balances, while Exodus was easier for beginners and Electrum offered more control to experienced Bitcoin users. Wasabi was the specialist privacy option, and BlueWallet was a practical mobile choice.
Whichever wallet you choose, the recovery phrase matters more than the app’s design. Keep only a manageable spending balance in a hot wallet, verify wallet software and hardware sources, check receiving addresses on trusted devices, and treat this list as historical rather than a current product ranking.
