Yes, a Google Business Profile bug or display problem can make reviews disappear—but a missing review does not by itself prove that Google deleted it or that an outage is to blame. Reviews may be delayed, filtered under Google’s policies, temporarily paused, or affected by a profile change. Compare where and when they disappeared before taking action.
That distinction matters financially: a sudden change in visible ratings can affect customer confidence and lead volume, but rushing customers to repost reviews or creating another profile can make the problem harder to resolve.
First, identify what is actually missing
“Reviews disappeared” can describe different problems. The review count may have fallen while some review text remains; a customer may still see their review in their account while the public cannot; or reviews may appear in Google Search but not Maps or the management interface. New reviews that do not become public, a changing star average, and a full review list that later returns are also distinct symptoms.
Record the review count, visible rating, and which reviews you can still see. Test the public listing while signed out as well as in the account that manages it. A mismatch between Google surfaces is useful evidence, but it does not prove a bug or permanent deletion.

Why Google reviews can go missing
| Possible cause | Pattern to look for | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| Moderation delay | A new review is not visible yet. | Wait several days, then check again. Google says reviews can be delayed while checked for compliance. Google’s missing-review guidance. |
| Policy filtering or removal | One or more reviews are no longer public, sometimes without a clear explanation to the business. | Review Google’s content policies and submit a support request if you believe the review was genuine. Google says reviews removed for policy violations generally will not be restored. Google’s guidance. |
| Display or synchronization problem | The count or review list differs between Search, Maps, the public profile, and the management interface. | Compare surfaces, devices, and signed-out views; capture the differences and report a persistent mismatch. |
| Profile merge or move | Reviews change after profiles are consolidated, a location changes, or a duplicate listing is involved. | Allow several days for a recent merge to process, then contact Google about missing reviews or transfer. Google’s guidance and the Business Profile Community guide. |
| Reinstatement | Reviews disappear after a suspended profile is restored. | Contact support with before-and-after evidence; Google specifically identifies this as a possible issue. Google’s guidance. |
| Temporary pause on contributions | New reviews stop, potentially after a sudden surge in suspected spam. | Look for a notification in the profile and contact support if the restriction or missing reviews persist. Google says it may temporarily pause contributions to address suspected spam. Google’s explanation. |
| Category-specific restriction | Reviews are disabled for a profile primarily categorized as a general education school serving students aged 6 to 18. | Check the institution type and primary category. Google distinguishes these schools from universities, daycare centers, and swim schools; the restriction should not be generalized to all education businesses. Google’s guidance. |
Google may filter a review even when the business believes it reflects a real customer experience. Its systems assess policy signals, and no single factor guarantees removal. Potential concerns include incentives, review gating, coordinated bursts, repeated wording, or reviews from people without a genuine experience. A filtered review is not proof that the reviewer or business acted dishonestly.
Was there a broader Google review issue in 2026?
In July 2026, Search Engine Land reported that Google was investigating reports of reviews going missing and review functionality pausing on local listings. That makes a broader platform issue plausible when many reviews vanish together or unrelated businesses report similar symptoms. The report is not proof that every missing-review case was part of one incident, nor does it establish that all affected reviews were restored. Search Engine Land’s report.
A wave of disappearances can also reflect automated spam filtering, a profile reinstatement or merge, or a temporary contribution restriction. Timing and comparisons across profiles help distinguish these possibilities; a bug should remain a possibility, not an assumed diagnosis.
How to check whether reviews are publicly missing
- Search for the business while signed out, using a private or incognito browser window. Confirm that the profile itself is still visible.
- Compare Google Search, Google Maps on desktop, the Maps mobile app, and the Business Profile management interface. Note where the count, rating, or review text differs.
- Ask one or two affected reviewers whether they can still see their own review and whether they received a removal notice. Do not ask them to change the wording or repost it.
- Check whether the issue followed a move, profile merge, name or category change, ownership change, suspension, reinstatement, or unusually large review influx.
- Make a dated record of the profile URL or Business Profile ID, prior and current review counts and ratings, reviewer names, review dates and ratings, screenshots, visible notices, and any support case numbers.
If the profile itself has vanished, investigate profile eligibility, verification, suspension, or duplicate-listing issues as well as the reviews. If a reviewer still sees a review that the public cannot, that shows a difference between account-level and public visibility—not proof that the review is simply hidden by a bug.

What to do in common scenarios
One recent review has not appeared
Wait several days, as Google may be checking it. Have the customer check their account and compare the public listing in Search and Maps. If the review remains missing, document what you can and contact support rather than asking for a duplicate.
Many reviews vanished at once
Capture the count, rating, visible review list, date and time, and any profile notices. Check other Google surfaces and whether the profile was recently reinstated or changed. If other businesses report similar behavior, that supports—but does not confirm—a broader issue. Send Google one consolidated timeline with the affected review details.

Reviews appear publicly but not in the management interface
Verify that you are using an account with appropriate profile access, then check the public listing in Search and Maps. A management-interface mismatch may be a display or synchronization issue; do not delete or recreate the profile to address it.
Reviews disappeared after reinstatement, a move, or a merge
Keep evidence from before and after the change and ask Google to investigate. A recent merge may take several days to display reviews correctly. If a new profile was inadvertently created after a location or ownership change, the Business Profile Community guide advises contacting Google about review transfer rather than recreating listings yourself. Community guidance on missing reviews and transfers.

Check for a notification that contributions have been temporarily paused. Google says a sudden spike in suspected spam can lead it to pause new reviews. A category restriction or a wider platform issue may also be relevant, so include the timing and any visible notice in a support request. Google’s review-protection explanation.

How to contact Google about missing reviews
- Open the Google Business Profile support hub and select the affected business.
- Choose the missing-review issue that best matches the available support options. The Business Profile Community guide documents labels such as “Missing Review” and “Review Missing,” but menu wording can vary by country, account, and support experience. Community support guidance.
- Submit a concise, factual account: the number of reviews affected; the date range; whether new reviews are appearing; whether reviewers can still see their posts; and any recent profile changes, merges, or reinstatement.
- Include the Business Profile ID, screenshots, reviewer names and dates, relevant review links if available, and any related case numbers. Keep follow-ups tied to the same case where possible.
Ask Google to investigate reviews from genuine customers that are no longer publicly visible. Support can investigate, but restoration is not guaranteed; describe the evidence rather than assuming a cause or demanding a specific outcome.

- Do not ask customers to repost identical reviews. Duplicate wording or repeated submissions may compound the signals that led to a review being held or filtered.
- Do not buy replacement reviews, offer incentives, use fake accounts, or selectively solicit only positive feedback. These practices can violate Google’s policies.
- Do not create a second profile or delete and recreate the existing one. Duplicate listings can split reviews and complicate ownership or transfer.
- Do not change the business category inaccurately to try to restore reviews; the category should describe the real business.
- Be wary of anyone promising guaranteed reinstatement. A vendor cannot legitimately guarantee that Google will restore reviews removed for policy violations.
When reviews are unlikely to return
Google says reviews removed for violating its content policies generally will not be restored. If Google determines that policy enforcement caused the removal, a support request is not a guarantee of reversal. If the cause is a delay, display mismatch, merge, or reinstatement issue, the next step is different: document the symptom and ask support to investigate. Avoid treating a lack of immediate resolution as proof of either permanent deletion or a bug.
Protect your business records and customer trust
Google is not a complete historical archive for your business. Where lawful and appropriate, retain review notifications, screenshots, dated counts, and exports from tools you already use. For agencies and multi-location businesses, keep a shared incident log with profile IDs, affected locations, timestamps, evidence, and case numbers. This can support internal reporting even if Google’s public display changes again.

While an issue is unresolved, continue normal, non-incentivized review requests without scripts that produce identical wording or pressure customers. Track lead volume and conversion changes separately from the review count, and maintain other legitimate customer-feedback channels so a single platform’s display problem is not your only record of customer sentiment.
If you consider paid monitoring or reputation software, treat it as an alerting and archiving tool—not a way to force Google to restore reviews. Check whether it records timestamps, review URLs, and exportable history, supports the number of locations you manage, and follows Google’s rules. A single-location business may need only a modest monitoring option; a franchise or agency may benefit from multi-location reporting. Do not pay for a product promising guaranteed recovery.
