Recommended Free Tools
Shared-expense apps do more than divide a restaurant bill. The better ones keep a running record of who paid, handle unequal shares, account for multiple currencies, and reduce a group’s debts to fewer repayments.
Splitwise is the best all-around choice, but it is no longer the obvious choice for every group: its free plan allows up to four expenses per day. For a free travel tracker, tricount is more attractive; for an account-free browser tool, Spliit or Kittysplit may be easier.
These rankings are based on expense tracking, split flexibility, settlement calculations, group participation, platform access, and the practical limits of each free plan. Product details were checked in August 2026.

1. Splitwise: best overall
Splitwise remains the most versatile option for roommates, couples, recurring household bills, vacations, and groups that need a permanent expense history. You can create groups or track expenses between individual friends, then split a bill equally, by exact amounts, percentages, shares, adjustments, or itemized purchases.
#1 Best Overall
- Efficient Cash Organization: Simplify your cash management with our 8-compartment black acrylic money organizer! Its top-opening design allows for easy placement of large amounts of cash, ensuring neat and orderly arrangement at all times.
- Customizable Design: Tailor the cash storage box to your needs with its detachable feature. Seven black acrylic partitions divide the box into eight uniform compartments, giving you the flexibility to adjust partition numbers and spacing according to your preferences.
- Durable and Easy to Maintain: Crafted from sturdy black acrylic, our Money Organizer is built to last. Its durable construction ensures longevity, while the smooth surface makes it effortless to clean and reuse, saving you time and effort.
- Functional and Stylish: Beyond its practicality, this cash storage rack doubles as a stylish addition to your workspace. The smooth and textured surface adds a touch of sophistication, making it not just a functional organizer but also a decorative accent.
- Versatile Storage Solution: The Cash Organizer isn't limited to cash alone. Utilize it to categorize and store various items such as business cards, letters, data cables, cards, and more. Its versatility makes it an essential tool for organizing your essentials efficiently.
Its biggest practical weakness is the current free-plan limit: free users can add up to four expenses per day. Splitwise Pro removes that limit and adds features such as receipt scanning, expense search, charts, currency conversion, default splits, and transaction import in supported countries.

Splitwise can minimize transfers across a group. That means it may suggest paying someone who was not the original payer, because it nets everyone’s balances together.
Be careful with currencies. Changing an expense’s currency label does not convert its amount. Actual conversion is a separate Pro function. Also, if you edit or delete an expense after recording a settlement, related balancing entries may need to be removed manually.
2. tricount: best free option for trips
tricount is especially good for vacations, weekend trips, dinners, and other groups that need a shared ledger without committing to a paid subscription. Everyone in the tricount can add expenses, and the app supports unequal splits, multiple currencies, offline entry, expense photos, and Splitwise importing.
The product’s current pricing is easy to misunderstand. tricount says its Premium subscription has been deprecated. Core features are now available without that subscription, although several former Premium features—including sorting expenses, CSV/PDF export, Personal mode, and Custom Splits—were removed or deprecated in the newer version.
Useful paths
- Create a tricount by opening the app and tapping the central
+. - Add a transaction by opening the tricount and tapping

Each tricount has one default currency. Individual expenses can use other currencies, but repayment suggestions are shown in the default currency. Rounding can also create a one-cent difference—for example, a €100 expense split three ways may become €33.34 for one person and €33.33 for each of the others.

Payment-request availability depends on location. The documented bank-account request flow covers the Netherlands, Germany, France, and Belgium, while credit-card repayments in that flow carry a 2.5% fee.
3. Settle Up: best for complex accounting
Settle Up is a strong choice when people contribute different amounts, groups need weighted shares or income entries, or the priority is reducing the number of repayments. It supports offline use, multiple payers, recurring transactions, read-only access, filters, member statistics, and CSV or email exports. Group data can sync across its iOS, Android, and web versions.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The key setting is debt minimization. With it enabled, Settle Up nets the group’s balances. For example, instead of three separate repayments between people, it may produce one payment to a participant who was not directly owed money. That reduces transfers but can surprise users who expect only direct debts.
To preserve direct debts, open Edit group and turn off debt minimization. If someone leaves, do not delete the member if old transactions need to remain intact. Edit the member and uncheck Include this member in new transactions instead.
Settle Up downloads daily exchange rates from Yahoo for foreign-currency transactions. You can edit the rate or the converted group-currency amount, but doing so can affect future transactions until the current-rate setting is restored.
4. Splid: best for offline travel
Splid suits travelers who want to start tracking expenses without creating accounts. It supports offline groups, optional synchronization, more than 150 currencies, automatic conversion, and PDF or Excel summaries showing who owes whom.

- No signup is required.
- Expenses can be recorded without an internet connection.
- Participants can activate synchronization when they need to enter expenses on separate devices.
- Currency conversion and downloadable summaries are built into the travel-focused workflow.
There is an important distinction between an offline group and a synchronized group. Separate copies will not automatically stay current while everyone is offline. The group should be synchronized or shared before participants rely on separate devices.
Platform coverage also needs checking before a trip. The U.S. App Store listing currently identifies Splid as iPhone-only, so it should not automatically be treated as a universal iOS-and-Android choice in every region.
5. Splital: best free Splitwise alternative with import
Splital is aimed at people who want unlimited expenses without ads or a subscription for the basic features. It supports offline entry, flexible and default splits, debt simplification, more than 150 currencies, and participants who do not have the app installed.
Its most useful migration feature is Splitwise import:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Splital says the import can include dates, amounts, payers, splits, settle-ups, and other expense details. An account is optional for local use, but required for backup and cross-device synchronization. Register before changing phones; otherwise, locally stored data may not be available on the new device.
The free plan covers the core splitting functions. Images, PDF/CSV export, statistics, and charts require Pro.

Create a group in a browser and share it with the participants. This is convenient for a dinner or trip where not everyone wants to download the same app. It is best described as a web app or Progressive Web App, not as a conventional native App Store or Google Play application.

Kittysplit is designed for parties, trips, dinners, and other temporary groups. You can create a “Kitty,” enter participants, and share a secret link without registration. Participants add expenses in a browser, and the service calculates the resulting debts. Native iOS and Android apps are also available, alongside the web version.

Registration is optional, but access depends on the secret link if you do not create an account. Losing the link, clearing cookies, or changing devices can make the Kitty difficult to recover.
Every Kitty has a home currency. Multiple currencies require an upgraded Kitty, which costs approximately €3 per group rather than charging each participant separately. Once a Kitty contains mixed currencies, its home currency cannot be changed.

How to choose a shared-expense app
- Choose the group’s lifespan. For recurring roommate bills, use Splitwise or Settle Up. For a single vacation, tricount, Splid, Kittysplit, or Spliit may be quicker.
- Check how often you will enter expenses. Splitwise’s four-expenses-per-day free limit matters for busy trips or households. Splital, tricount, Spliit, and Splid are better fits when you do not want that restriction.
- Decide whether accounts are acceptable. Splid, Spliit, and Kittysplit support account-free use, but account-free access generally makes backup and recovery weaker.
- Check currency handling before traveling. Some apps use a home currency and convert back to it; others offer broader currency tools only on paid plans.
- Agree on settlement rules. Debt minimization reduces transfers but can route money through someone who was not the original payer. Turn it off if the group wants direct repayments.
- Confirm who actually sends the money. Most of these apps calculate balances rather than moving money. The group still settles through cash, a bank transfer, Venmo, PayPal, or another payment service.
FAQ
What is the best app for splitting bills with roommates?
Splitwise is the best general choice for recurring roommate expenses because it supports groups, recurring bills, multiple split methods, and a long-term history. Settle Up is a good alternative if minimizing the number of repayments is more important than keeping direct debts visible.
Which bill-splitting app is free without an expense limit?
Splital advertises unlimited expenses on its free plan. tricount’s core app is also currently free, while Spliit, Splid, and the basic version of Kittysplit do not use Splitwise’s four-expenses-per-day restriction. Each has different limits around syncing, exports, currencies, or account recovery.
Do all participants need to install the same bill-splitting app?
No. Several services allow participants to join through a shared group, link, browser, or manually entered name. Spliit is browser-based, Kittysplit can be used through a secret link, and Splitwise groups can include people who do not actively use the app.
Do these apps transfer money automatically?
Usually not. They calculate who owes whom and record repayments. Some tricount payment-request flows are available in selected countries, but most users still complete settlement separately through a bank transfer, cash, Venmo, PayPal, or another payment service.

Choose Splitwise for the most complete ongoing expense history, provided its four-expenses-per-day free limit is acceptable. Choose tricount for a free, travel-friendly group tracker; Settle Up for complex accounting and transfer minimization; and Splid for offline, no-signup travel use.
If avoiding accounts is the priority, start with Spliit or Kittysplit. If you are leaving Splitwise and need to carry over old data, Splital is the most direct option in this list. Before anyone pays, confirm the group’s default currency, how unequal shares will be handled, and whether the app’s suggested settlements match the way your group wants to repay.
