Google Layoffs Hundreds Of ‘Core’ Employees, Eyes Replacements Abroad: Report

Google reportedly laid off at least 200 Core employees in 2024 while planning some corresponding roles in India and Mexico. The evidence does not show one-for-one overseas replacements.

Google cut at least 200 employees from its “Core” organization in a restructuring reported on May 1, 2024, according to CNBC reporting cited by Reuters and other outlets. The affected work included Python development, information technology, technical infrastructure, security foundations and related technical teams.

Google also planned to expand or recreate some corresponding roles in India and Mexico. That does not establish that every U.S. worker was directly replaced one-for-one overseas. The cuts were part of a broader effort to simplify the company, reduce management layers and shift resources toward priority projects, including artificial intelligence.

What happened in Google’s Core organization?

Google’s Core organization supports the technical foundations behind many of the company’s products. The reported layoffs affected at least 200 people across several Core teams, including:

  • Google’s Python developer team
  • Information technology
  • Technical infrastructure
  • Security foundations
  • Other technical and infrastructure groups

The “at least 200” figure came from reporting, not from an official Alphabet disclosure of the exact number. It should not be treated as Google’s total layoff count or as the number of all engineering employees affected.

Google did not describe the move as a company-wide layoff. Instead, the company framed it as an organizational restructuring designed to reduce bureaucracy, remove management layers and direct investment toward its highest-priority work.

Were the jobs moved overseas?

Reportedly, Google planned to expand or recreate some affected roles in India and Mexico. The more accurate description is that some corresponding positions were expected to be hired or located abroad.

There is no verified evidence that every employee laid off in the United States was matched to a specific replacement in another country. “Replacements abroad” is a headline-friendly shorthand, but it can imply a one-for-one transfer that the available reporting does not prove.

What is supported by the reporting What should not be assumed
At least 200 Core employees were laid off. That 200 was Google’s total layoff figure.
Some related roles were planned for India and Mexico. Every U.S. worker was directly replaced overseas.
Technical, infrastructure and security functions were affected. All Google engineering teams were eliminated or reduced.
The changes were connected to cost control and organizational simplification. The move was officially described as a single company-wide layoff.

How the cuts fit Google’s AI restructuring

The Core layoffs followed a larger April 2024 reorganization. Google said it was consolidating model-building work under Google DeepMind, unifying machine-learning infrastructure and developer teams, and combining its Platforms and Devices organizations.

That context matters because the company was not simply reducing headcount across every division. It was reshaping teams around artificial intelligence and other projects management considered strategically important. Some functions could be merged, relocated or given fewer management layers even while Google continued hiring or investing in priority areas.

Google had already announced separate reductions in January 2024 affecting hardware, engineering and Assistant-related teams. Those cuts should not be added to the reported Core figure as though they were one officially announced round with one confirmed total.

What the layoffs mean for workers and household finances

For affected employees, the immediate financial issues were likely severance, health coverage, equity compensation, unemployment eligibility and the timing of any new job. Google’s public statements about restructuring do not establish the individual terms provided to each worker.

Anyone affected by a large technology layoff should review the separation agreement before making financial decisions. Important items include:

  1. Final pay and severance: Confirm the number of weeks or months covered, payment dates and whether severance is a lump sum or continues through payroll.
  2. Health insurance: Check when employer coverage ends and compare COBRA, marketplace and spouse-plan options. A cheaper premium is not necessarily the better choice if the deductible or provider network changes significantly.
  3. Vested and unvested stock: Review the treatment of restricted stock units, options and employee stock purchase plans. A vesting date close to the termination date can have a material effect on total compensation.
  4. Retirement accounts: Decide whether to leave a 401(k) in the former employer’s plan, roll it into an individual retirement account or move it to a new employer’s plan. Compare fees and investment choices before transferring assets.
  5. Taxes: Severance, equity income and unemployment benefits can affect withholding and estimated tax needs. Withholding is not always the same as the final tax liability.
  6. Cash reserves: Build a spending plan around guaranteed cash rather than expected stock proceeds or an assumed quick rehire. A six-month emergency fund may need to cover longer if the job search is concentrated in a narrow specialty.

Why the “200 employees” number needs careful reading

Alphabet reported 180,895 employees as of March 31, 2024. That figure is the company’s total headcount at the end of the first quarter; it is not a layoff number and should not be used to calculate the size of the Core reduction.

California WARN filings also recorded Google layoffs scheduled for March 10, 2024, across locations including Mountain View, Sunnyvale and San Francisco. Those filings identify job reductions by location, but they do not identify the employees’ business units. They therefore cannot independently confirm that all of those workers belonged to Core or that they should be added to the reported May figure.

What this could mean for the technology job market

The restructuring illustrated a pattern affecting large technology companies in 2024: continued spending on AI alongside reductions in other roles, tighter management structures and greater use of international hiring hubs. For workers, that can make a company appear to be hiring while still reducing opportunities in a particular U.S. team or specialty.

For personal planning, the practical lesson is to distinguish company-wide hiring announcements from demand for a specific role and location. A new position in India or Mexico does not automatically mean an equivalent U.S. position is available, nor does it prove that a laid-off employee can transition into it.

The reported Google cuts were therefore significant for the affected teams, but they should be described precisely: at least 200 Core employees were reportedly laid off, and some related work was planned for India and Mexico as Google reorganized around cost control and AI priorities.

FAQ

How many Google Core employees were laid off?

Reports published in May 2024 said Google laid off at least 200 employees from its Core organization. The figure was a reported estimate, not a precise company-disclosed total.

Did Google replace all of the laid-off workers overseas?

No. Available reporting supports that Google planned to expand or recreate some corresponding roles in India and Mexico. It does not prove a one-for-one replacement of every U.S. employee.

What teams were affected by the Google Core layoffs?

Reportedly affected functions included the Python developer team, information technology, technical infrastructure, security foundations and other Core technical teams.

Were these the same layoffs Google announced in January 2024?

No. The Core reductions followed separate January cuts involving hardware, engineering and Assistant-related teams. The rounds should not be combined into one officially confirmed layoff total.

The Bottom Line

Google’s reported Core layoffs involved at least 200 employees, with some related roles planned for India and Mexico. The event was part of a broader 2024 restructuring tied to cost control, organizational simplification and Google’s AI priorities—not evidence that every affected U.S. employee was directly replaced abroad. For workers, the financial impact depends on the individual separation package, equity treatment, health coverage and time needed to find a new role.
