Claim announced a $4 million seed round led by Sequoia Capital on December 20, 2023. The company was building a rewards app where people could earn cash back, share or exchange eligible brand rewards with friends, and redeem them through purchases. Claim also disclosed a previously unannounced $2 million pre-seed led by Susa Ventures and BoxGroup. The funding story is historical: Claim later announced a $12 million Series A in October 2024.
What Claim does
Claim combined elements of a cashback and loyalty platform, a peer-to-peer reward exchange, social discovery, and brand marketing. Its interactions centered on shopping benefits and experiences, not a conventional feed of posts or videos. The company described its idea as “benefits with friends”: rewards could give people a reason to introduce a friend to a brand or try a place together.
Claim’s December 2023 announcement described a product that linked a user’s existing credit card, used verified transaction data to build a profile partly based on shopping activity, and made brand rewards available to users. People could send a reward to a friend who had not visited a brand, or gift, exchange, or redeem eligible rewards. Claim presented the approach as a way for friends to share brand discoveries and offers rather than simply passively see advertising. Claim’s product and funding announcement and TechCrunch’s contemporary coverage describe these mechanics.
“Trade” here should not be read as financial trading. The available product descriptions portray promotional benefits exchanged among eligible friends, not cryptocurrency, securities, or an open marketplace where rewards can be freely bought and sold. Eligibility and redemption depend on Claim’s rules and the particular reward.

How rewards and Drops worked
- Link a credit card. Claim’s description said users connected an existing card, allowing the service to verify transactions and infer some shopping preferences.
- Receive or earn brand rewards. Rewards were tied to participating brands and eligible activity; they were not unrestricted cash or guaranteed income.
- Share with eligible friends. Users could send, gift, or exchange certain rewards, including as an invitation to try a brand.
- Redeem through a purchase. Claim described redemption as shopping with a regular credit card. In its October 2024 announcement, it said cash back was sent through Venmo; the announcement did not establish universal account or geographic eligibility.
Claim called coordinated reward releases “Drops.” In the historical product description, Drops were weekly: users received a new reward at the same time and could decide whether to redeem, gift, or trade it with eligible friends. That description does not mean every user got the same reward or that every reward was transferable. The weekly cadence is historical, not confirmation of the product’s current schedule.
Why Claim called itself a social network
Claim’s thesis was that a reward could work as a social object: a friend might share a cashback opportunity, introduce someone to a brand, or use a reward to plan a shared experience. The company contrasted this with platforms built around scrolling, sponsored content, and reposting. That is Claim’s positioning, not proof that the product displaced advertising or established a new category on its own.
The model sits alongside familiar approaches such as individual cashback portals, receipt-rewards programs, issuer-run card rewards, brand-specific loyalty schemes, referral incentives, and content-led social commerce. Its distinctive combination was the attempt to make rewards exchangeable among friends while using purchase-linked data to help brands target and measure customer acquisition. That combination does not make every component unprecedented.

How Claim aimed to make money
The announcements framed Claim primarily as a customer-acquisition and brand-marketing platform. In the company’s account, a brand supplied a reward, Claim assessed whether a user had previously visited or purchased from it, and the service then observed whether that person later shopped there. Friend-to-friend sharing was intended to help brands reach potential new customers; transaction data could help attribute a subsequent purchase.

What Claim reported about early traction
At the time of the December 2023 coverage, Claim said it had more than 10,000 users, with an initial concentration among college and university students in Boston, and planned to expand nationally. It named PepsiCo, For Others, and Life Alive among brands it was working with. These are historical, company-reported details—not a current user count or confirmation of present-day availability.
Claim also reported early partner results: one brand reached 97% of its new-customer goal in half the expected time, while another recorded a 35% repeat-customer rate within 30 days. The company said campaigns had produced thousands of new customers for early brand partners. The announcement does not supply the sample sizes, cohort definitions, comparison groups, or methodology needed to independently assess or generalize those figures. They should be understood as selected company-reported results, not independently verified performance data.

Who founded Claim and who invested
Sam Obletz and Tap Stephenson founded Claim. TechCrunch reported that the company was founded in November 2021, that the founders met as roommates at Yale, and that they reconnected in business school at Harvard. Their earlier concept involved digital ownership and collectible-like online items before shifting toward rewards connected to real-world purchases. That history helps explain the emphasis on owning, exchanging, and sharing benefits.

What the seed funding was meant to support
Claim said it would use the seed capital to hire engineers, develop the product, and enter additional geographies. TechCrunch reported that the company intended to test and learn from the product and engineering side before expanding into new markets. The plan was an announced intention, not evidence that expansion occurred on a particular timetable.
Claim’s later funding
On October 8, 2024, Claim announced a $12 million Series A led by VMG Technology, with participation from Sequoia Capital, Susa Ventures, Lightbank, and Metalab Ventures. Claim said the round brought its total announced funding to $20 million. These are company-announced financing figures, and they make clear that the December 2023 seed was not the latest disclosed round. Claim’s Series A announcement provides the later funding and redemption details.
What users and brands should weigh
For consumers
- Card-data sensitivity: Linking a payment card makes transaction data central to personalization and reward eligibility. The funding announcements do not specify the card-linking provider, transaction fields collected, retention period, deletion process, or how data is used beyond the described product functions.
- Conditions on rewards: A reward may be limited by brand, location, timing, eligibility, or redemption rules. A cashback offer that requires a purchase is not the same as guaranteed savings, and it can prompt spending a user would not otherwise make.
- Transfer and payout constraints: The company described gifting or exchanging eligible rewards and, in 2024, Venmo cash-back delivery. The available descriptions do not establish exact account, identity, location, or transfer requirements.
- Social incentives: Sharing rewards may make discovery more personal, but it can also add social pressure to spend or try a brand.
For brands
- Potential benefit: Claim pitched friend-to-friend rewards as an alternative to paid social advertising and said purchase history could help identify new customers and measure subsequent transactions.
- Attribution limits: A customer’s later purchase may have happened without the offer, and the cited early results lack publicly described methodology. Brands would need to assess whether the measurement shows incremental business rather than correlation.
- Market density: The product’s value depends on having enough users, relevant friends, and participating nearby brands. Results from a Boston student launch would not automatically establish performance in other cities or demographics.
- Data governance: Brands also need to understand consent and data handling for transaction-linked marketing, details not supplied in the funding announcements.
Open questions about the model
Claim’s approach depends on a balance: users want benefits that are genuinely useful, while brands want profitable incremental customers. Several questions follow from that design, but the available announcements do not establish them as documented failures:

- Network effects: Does the service remain useful when a user’s friends or local merchants are not participating?
- Reward liquidity: Can a user find an eligible friend who actually wants a particular reward, and what happens to unused or expired rewards?
- Incentive quality: Do rewards bring in new customers or subsidize purchases that would have happened anyway?
- Trust and abuse: How does the system address duplicate accounts, disputed transactions, reversals, or manipulation of referrals and redemptions?
- Retention: Do scheduled Drops build lasting relationships or mainly create short-term engagement?
- Infrastructure dependence: How would changes to card-linking services or Venmo affect the experience?
- Current status: The cited announcements establish historical product descriptions and financing milestones, not Claim’s operating status, present user count, current geographic availability, app-store presence, or product changes as of August 18, 2026.
