Free Bitcoin Mining Software

Free Bitcoin mining software can control compatible ASICs, but it does not eliminate hardware, electricity, cooling, or pool and firmware costs. Compare BFGMiner, legacy cgminer, and Braiins OS carefully, and do not expect a laptop or phone to mine profitably.

Free Bitcoin mining software costs nothing to download or uses an open-source licence, but mining still requires suitable ASIC hardware, electricity, cooling, internet access, and often pool or firmware fees. For most people, a laptop or phone cannot compete in Bitcoin mining; software controls mining hardware but does not guarantee income.

A genuine miner connects to a mining pool or a Bitcoin Core node for solo mining. Bitcoin Core supplies node validation and mining RPCs, while separate software and ASIC hardware perform the hashing. Bitcoin’s developer guide describes the specialized role of mining hardware.

What free Bitcoin mining software actually provides

Mining software assigns work to hardware, communicates with a pool or Bitcoin Core node, and reports results. It does not supply the expensive parts of the operation.

Cost or requirement Why it matters
ASIC miner Bitcoin mining is dominated by specialized hardware. A desktop CPU, phone, or ordinary GPU is generally not economically useful for Bitcoin mining.
Electricity A miner may run continuously and consume substantial power, making electricity a major ongoing cost.
Cooling and ventilation ASICs produce significant heat. Poor airflow can cause thermal shutdowns or hardware damage.
Pool or firmware fees Mining pools and some firmware products may deduct fees from proceeds.
Wallet and account security Protect pool credentials, payout addresses, and firmware-management accounts.

The important question is not whether the software is free, but whether expected bitcoin revenue exceeds electricity, hardware depreciation, maintenance, pool fees, firmware fees, and opportunity cost. A simple estimate is:

Legitimate free and open-source options

Software Best suited to Important limitation
BFGMiner Command-line mining with compatible ASICs, FPGAs, GPUs, and optionally CPUs It is GPLv3 and free of charge, but its upstream repository has no packaged releases listed. Verify third-party binaries carefully. CPU mining is disabled by default and is not a practical route to profitable Bitcoin mining.
cgminer Legacy ASIC and FPGA setups The upstream repository is GPLv3 but has been archived since May 27, 2020. Treat it as legacy software, not a current general-purpose miner for modern hardware.
Braiins OS Compatible Antminer hardware This is ASIC firmware, not a Windows or macOS desktop miner. The Community edition has limited functionality; current downloadable firmware uses licensing and a developer-fee model. Braiins Academy identifies the current release as Braiins OS 26.07.
Bitcoin Core plus separate mining software Solo miners who operate their own Bitcoin node Bitcoin Core validates the chain and provides mining RPCs. It does not perform ASIC hashing by itself.

Check the projects’ BFGMiner repository, cgminer repository, and Braiins OS licence information for current status and terms.

BFGMiner: connecting an ASIC to a pool

BFGMiner can connect to a pool using a Stratum URL. Replace each placeholder with the details supplied by your pool:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

bfgminer -o stratum+tcp://POOL_HOST:PORT -u USERNAME -p PASSWORD

The documented generic HTTP form is:

bfgminer -o http://POOL_HOST:PORT -u USERNAME -p PASSWORD

BFGMiner automatically detects Stratum when a pool advertises it. To force Stratum, use a Stratum port or the stratum+tcp:// prefix. Check the pool’s documentation before copying a port or username format. A connection can start successfully and still produce no payout if the account name, worker name, algorithm, or payout address is wrong.

Solo mining with BFGMiner and Bitcoin Core

Solo mining does not provide regular pool payouts. Your hardware works toward finding an entire valid block, so payout variance is extremely high: you can contribute work for a long time without finding one.

Bitcoin Core must be running and configured for RPC access. BFGMiner’s documented form is:

bfgminer -o http://localhost:8332 -u BITCOIN_RPC_USERNAME -p BITCOIN_RPC_PASSWORD –generate-to BITCOIN_ADDRESS

The address passed to –generate-to is intended to receive the coinbase reward if the miner finds a block. Keep RPC credentials private and do not expose Bitcoin Core’s RPC port directly to the public internet.

Bitcoin Core exposes mining-related RPCs such as getblocktemplate, submitblock, and getmininginfo, but separate mining software and suitable hardware are still required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

cgminer: useful mainly for older setups

For a compatible legacy ASIC or FPGA, the documented pool command is:

cgminer -o stratum+tcp://POOL_HOST:PORT -u USERNAME -p PASSWORD

Its documented solo-mining form is:

cgminer -o http://localhost:8332 -u BITCOIN_RPC_USERNAME -p BITCOIN_RPC_PASSWORD –btc-address BITCOIN_ADDRESS

Because the upstream repository has been archived, confirm driver support and security implications before installing cgminer on a current machine. Old device drivers in source code do not mean a device is profitable or compatible with current ASIC hardware.

Braiins OS: firmware with meaningful qualifications

Braiins OS replaces or supplements factory firmware on supported Antminer models. It provides pool management, monitoring, and performance tuning on the ASIC rather than through a separate desktop program. Check the exact miner model and control-board type against the official compatibility and download information before installation.

For supported Antminer S19 and S21 control boards, Braiins recommends a MicroSD card with at least 128 MB and advises avoiding cards larger than 8 GB. Flash the image with BalenaEtcher, Rufus, or dd; copying the image file onto the card will not work. See the Braiins installation guide.

  • Complete Kit Included – NerdQaxe++ miner, premium 12.4V / 10A power supply, and sturdy metal stand. Made in Europe with high-quality components.

Configure a pool in the web interface

  1. Open the miner’s web interface.
  2. Go to Configuration > Pools.
  3. Enter a primary URL such as stratum+tcp://stratum.braiins.com:3333.
  4. Enter a backup URL such as stratum+tcp://stratum.braiins.com:443.
  5. Set the user ID in the format userName.workerName.
  6. Use the pool’s required password, or the documented placeholder or empty value if permitted.

The Braiins Pool username is case-sensitive. A worker name can identify a device; if omitted, Braiins can create one automatically. See Braiins’ configuration guide.

Use autotuning carefully

Go to Configuration > Performance > Enable Autotuning, then choose a power target or hashrate target. Progress appears on the Dashboard under Tuner status; Stable indicates that the target has been reached.

Do not judge results from hashrate alone. Higher hashrate can increase electricity use, heat, fan wear, and rejected shares. Compare wall-meter readings and pool-reported accepted hashrate with expected revenue.

Batch-manage miners with Braiins Toolbox

On Linux, launch the tool from its directory with:

./braiins-toolbox

To scan a network range:

./braiins-toolbox scan ‘10.10.10-11.*’

To install, upgrade, or remove firmware:

./braiins-toolbox firmware install ‘10.10.10-11.*’

./braiins-toolbox firmware upgrade ‘10.10.10-11.*’

./braiins-toolbox firmware uninstall ‘10.10.10-11.*’

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For batch pool configuration:

./braiins-toolbox miner set-pool-urls –url ‘stratum+tcp://user:[email protected]:3333’ ‘10.10.10-11.*’

The –url option can be repeated. Braiins documents stratum+tcp and stratum2+tcp; a Stratum V2 URL must include the required authority public key. See the Braiins Toolbox documentation.

Fees that make “free” software less free

Current Braiins OS documentation describes a developer fee of 2%–2.5%, depending on the hardware model, by directing that portion of hashing power to its pool. The miner can use other pools, and Braiins Pool may offer a fee rebate for Braiins OS users.

These cosmetic imperfections do not affect the miner's performance. ※IMPORTANT※ This is a refurbished aluminum plate model without official BITMAIN warranty. The power cord is NOT INCLUDED. Please use 220-240V input voltage only to avoid potential damage. Returns without malfunction incur a 40% restocking fee.

For Braiins OS version 23.04 and later, licence terms state that the software periodically verifies its licence with a licence server. If verification cannot be completed, the firmware intentionally operates at 95% of processing power until verification succeeds. These terms belong in a profitability calculation: “no download price” and “no deductions” are different claims.

Common problems and what they mean

Symptom Likely explanation or action
Miner connects but earns nothing Check hardware support for Bitcoin’s algorithm, the pool URL and port, and the case-sensitive username.
Pool rejects shares Check the algorithm, worker credentials, firmware compatibility, and accidental whitespace.
Pool address cannot be reached Try an alternate documented pool port and check firewall, DNS, and network restrictions.
Old pool instructions fail Replace obsolete location-specific Braiins Pool addresses with the current documented stratum.braiins.com address where appropriate.
Miner hashes but there is no revenue A drain://localhost configuration can keep hardware working when pools are unavailable, but work goes nowhere and produces no payout.
Firmware page still shows the manufacturer interface Clear the browser cache or try a different browser before assuming installation failed.
SSH stops working after an update Some manufacturer firmware updates increasingly restrict SSH. Check update notes before upgrading a fleet managed through SSH.
Solo hashrate suddenly displays zero BFGMiner’s solo statistics can fall to zero after rejected submitted work without necessarily meaning hashing has stopped.

How to avoid fake “free mining” offers

Be sceptical of websites or apps promising guaranteed Bitcoin income from a phone, browser, or ordinary laptop. The FTC warns that cryptojacking abuses a device’s processing power and can cause slowdowns, battery drain, overheating, or crashes. See the FTC guidance on cryptojacking.

Cloud-mining offers deserve the same caution. Guaranteed profits, unusually fast returns, and requests to send cryptocurrency before receiving a job or payout are scam indicators. The FTC’s cryptocurrency scam guidance explains common warning signs. Never install a miner from an unsolicited link, share wallet seed phrases, or give an unknown program unrestricted access to your wallet.

A sensible decision process

  1. Identify the hardware. Confirm it is a supported Bitcoin ASIC, not merely a computer capable of running mining software.
  2. Calculate power cost. Measure actual wall consumption and multiply it by your electricity rate and expected operating hours.
  3. Choose pool or solo mining. A pool normally reduces payout variance; solo mining has very high variance and requires Bitcoin Core plus separate mining software.
  4. Check all fees. Include pool charges, firmware developer fees, withdrawal fees, and licence restrictions.
  5. Download only from official sources. Verify model compatibility and checksums or signatures where provided; avoid random binary-download sites.
  6. Monitor real results. Compare accepted shares, rejected shares, uptime, wall power, heat, and payouts rather than relying on software hashrate estimates.

FAQ

Can I mine Bitcoin for free on my laptop or phone?

You may be able to run mining software, but a laptop or phone is not generally competitive for Bitcoin mining. It can consume power, create heat, reduce battery life, and provide little or no useful revenue.

What is the best free Bitcoin mining software?

There is no single best choice. BFGMiner is an open-source option for compatible hardware, cgminer is mainly a legacy ASIC/FPGA tool, and Braiins OS is firmware for supported Antminer devices. Your ASIC model, pool, and management needs determine the practical choice.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Bitcoin Core a Bitcoin miner?

Bitcoin Core validates the blockchain and provides mining RPCs such as getblocktemplate. It does not replace a dedicated mining program or the ASIC hardware needed to perform Bitcoin’s hashing work.

Does free mining software guarantee profit?

No. Profit depends on bitcoin revenue, ASIC efficiency, electricity price, uptime, pool and firmware fees, hardware cost, and network competition. Free software removes at most one purchase price; it does not remove operating costs.

The Bottom Line

Free Bitcoin mining software exists, but free software is not free Bitcoin mining. BFGMiner is an open-source option for compatible ASICs, cgminer is legacy software, and Braiins OS is firmware for supported hardware with documented fees. Treat laptop-mining and guaranteed-return claims as warning signs, calculate costs from measured wall power, and verify downloads and pool settings through official documentation.
