Apple’s U.S. iPhone 17 lineup ranges from $599 to $1,999 before sales tax, depending on the model and storage capacity. There is one easy-to-miss pricing detail: Apple’s advertised “from $799” price for the iPhone 17 includes a $30 connectivity discount. If you choose “Connect on your own later,” the 256GB phone costs $829 before tax.

How much does each iPhone 17 model cost?

iPhone 17e: $599 or $799

The iPhone 17e is the budget entry point. The 256GB version costs $599, and moving to 512GB raises the price to $799. Both capacities are available in black, white, and soft pink. For shoppers focused on keeping the upfront price below $600 before tax, the 256GB iPhone 17e is the only model in this lineup that meets that mark. See Apple’s iPhone 17e store listing.

iPhone 17: $829 or $1,029 when connecting later

The iPhone 17 is available with 256GB or 512GB of storage. At Apple’s “Connect on your own later” price, the 256GB model costs $829 and the 512GB model costs $1,029.

The headline price can be confusing: Apple advertises the iPhone 17 from $799 when the purchase qualifies for its $30 connectivity discount. That discounted price requires activation with AT&T, Boost Mobile, T-Mobile, or Verizon. See Apple’s iPhone 17 announcement.

What the listed price does—and does not—include

Sales tax comes on top

Apple’s displayed prices are before sales tax. The amount you pay depends on the shipping address or the Apple Store location selected for pickup. Apple explains its sales tax and payment details.

Trade-in credits are not the same as the phone’s price

Apple and carriers may advertise credits of up to $800–$1,100 on qualifying purchases. Those offers depend on the phone being traded in, the carrier, the model purchased, and the terms of the promotion. Check the applicable terms on Apple’s iPhone purchase page.

When comparing models, start with the full Apple price. Then subtract only a trade-in or promotional credit you actually qualify for. A headline credit should not be treated as an automatic discount for every buyer.

AppleCare+ and accessories are extra

The prices above do not include AppleCare+, cases, chargers, or other accessories. They also do not account for the cost of a cellular plan.

Storage upgrades: what you are paying for

Model Lowest capacity Highest capacity Price increase from lowest to highest
iPhone 17e 256GB 512GB $200
iPhone 17 256GB 512GB $200
iPhone Air 256GB 1TB $400
iPhone 17 Pro 256GB 1TB $400
iPhone 17 Pro Max 256GB 2TB $800

Across the lineup, increasing storage costs $200 per step except for the Pro Max’s 1TB-to-2TB jump, which costs $400. If you are deciding between a higher-capacity model and a more expensive model tier, compare the total—not just the monthly payment shown by a carrier.

How to compare the real cost before buying

  1. Choose the model and storage first. This gives you the true starting price instead of the lowest headline price for a different configuration.
  2. Check the connectivity selection. For the iPhone 17, compare the $829 “Connect on your own later” price with the $799 carrier-activation price.
  3. Add local sales tax. Apple calculates it from the delivery address or pickup location.
  4. Subtract confirmed credits only. Include a trade-in value or carrier promotion only after checking its eligibility requirements and payout structure.
  5. Budget for ownership costs. Include your cellular plan, AppleCare+ if wanted, and any accessories you would otherwise buy separately.

Also note that the U.S. iPhone 17e, iPhone 17, iPhone Air, and iPhone 17 Pro models use eSIM only and do not include a physical SIM tray. That is not a separate line-item charge, but it can matter if your current phone or carrier setup depends on a physical SIM. See Apple’s U.S. iPhone 17 store page.

The Bottom Line

The iPhone 17 lineup starts at $599 for the 256GB iPhone 17e and reaches $1,999 for the 2TB iPhone 17 Pro Max. For the standard iPhone 17, use $829—not the advertised $799—as the relevant price when you plan to connect with your carrier later. Add sales tax and any extras, and treat trade-in or carrier credits as conditional discounts rather than guaranteed savings.
