To use Apple Pay for the first time, add an eligible debit or credit card to the Wallet app, verify it with your bank, then authenticate a payment with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode. You do not normally need your bank’s app, although some card issuers offer an “Add to Apple Wallet” button.

Before starting, make sure your iPhone supports Apple Pay, your card issuer participates, Apple Pay is available in your country or region, and your iPhone has a passcode, Face ID, or Touch ID enabled. You also need two-factor authentication on your Apple Account and an internet connection while the card is being added and verified.

1. Add your card to Apple Wallet

  1. Open the Wallet app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap the Add Card button, usually shown as a plus sign.
  3. Choose Debit or Credit Card, then tap Continue.
  4. Add the card using one of the available methods: scan it with the camera, enter the card details manually, or hold the iPhone near the card if that option appears.
  5. Read the terms and follow the instructions to verify the card with your bank or card issuer.

Your issuer may verify the card by text message, security questions, a phone call, or its banking app. The card is not ready to use until this verification is complete.

Wallet may also show a Previous Cards section. These can include cards used with your Apple Account, another Apple device, or AutoFill. You can select one, tap Continue, and complete the issuer’s verification process.

  • Use the, easy-to-use, and customizable POS to get started.

On some eligible iPhones running newer software, you may see an option to provision a card by tapping the physical card against the back of the iPhone. Availability depends on the card, issuer, iOS version, and region, so the standard scan or manual-entry methods may still be the only choices.

2. Check or change the default card

The first payment card you add normally becomes the default card on that iPhone. This is the card Apple Pay presents when you use the payment shortcut.

To change it:

  1. Open Wallet.
  2. Touch and hold the card you want to use.
  3. Drag it in front of the other cards.

You can also use Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay > Apple Pay Defaults > Transaction defaults > Default Card.

3. Make your first in-store payment

Look for the Apple Pay logo or the contactless-payment symbol at the checkout. The terminal must support contactless payments and accept your card’s payment network. A contactless symbol alone does not guarantee that the terminal is currently configured to accept Apple Pay.

Why double-clicking does not open Apple Pay

Check the shortcut settings if nothing happens:

  • For a Face ID iPhone, go to Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay > Apple Pay Defaults and turn on Double-Click Side Button.
  • For a Touch ID iPhone, use the same menu and turn on Double-Click Home Button.
  • Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode or Settings > Touch ID & Passcode. Under Allow Access When Locked, turn on Wallet.

On newer iPhones, another contactless-payment app may be selected as the default. In that case, the shortcut can open that app instead of Apple Wallet. Open Wallet, select the card, and use the side-button shortcut to authenticate Apple Pay manually.

If the physical double-click is hard to perform, go to Settings > Accessibility > Side Button or Settings > Accessibility > Home Button and adjust Click Speed. Face ID iPhones also offer alternative settings for side-button confirmation, including AssistiveTouch and Switch Control.

If Apple Pay will not add your card

Messages such as “Could Not Add Card,” “Invalid Card,” or “Card Device Limit” usually require checking both the iPhone and the issuer’s records. Work through this list:

  1. Confirm that the bank or card issuer supports Apple Pay for that specific card.
  2. Update the iPhone to the latest iOS version available for it.
  3. Check that a passcode, Face ID, or Touch ID is enabled.
  4. Confirm that Apple Pay is available in your country or region.
  5. Make sure the iPhone model is compatible.
  6. Confirm that two-factor authentication is enabled for your Apple Account.
  7. Try again with a reliable internet connection and check for service outages.
  8. Contact the bank or card issuer if the verification fails or the message refers to a device limit.

Apple does not approve or decline your card for Apple Pay. The bank, card issuer, or payment network makes that decision. If the issuer says the card is eligible but Wallet still refuses it, update iOS and ask the issuer to check whether the card has already reached its Apple Pay device limit.

If an Apple Pay transaction is declined

A card can be added successfully and still be declined at the register. Apple Pay sends the transaction to the card issuer for approval, so the bank is the right contact for a card-specific decline.

Before contacting the bank, check the practical causes:

  • The merchant accepts the card’s payment network, such as Visa or Mastercard.
  • The terminal’s contactless function is enabled.
  • You are holding the top of the iPhone close enough to the reader.
  • You wait for the confirmation screen instead of removing the phone immediately.
  • The card is not frozen, expired, over its limit, or blocked for suspected fraud.

If the terminal rejects the payment but your bank cannot see an attempted transaction, ask the merchant to confirm that contactless Apple Pay payments are enabled. If the bank sees and declines the transaction, the bank must explain or resolve the decline.

Is Apple Pay safe to use?

Apple Pay does not give the merchant your physical card number. It uses a device-specific Device Account Number and a transaction-specific security code. Each payment also requires the authentication method configured on the iPhone, such as Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode.

That does not make every purchase risk-free: review the merchant name and amount before approving, keep your iPhone passcode private, and contact your card issuer promptly if a transaction looks unfamiliar. Apple Pay purchases still follow the card’s normal account terms, fraud procedures, rewards rules, and available credit or funds.

FAQ

Do I need my bank’s app to set up Apple Pay?

No. You can usually add the card directly in Wallet. Your bank may still require its app, a text message, a phone call, or another verification method before the card can be used.

Can I use Apple Pay without opening the Wallet app?

Yes. Double-click the side button on a Face ID iPhone or the Home button on a Touch ID iPhone, authenticate, and hold the top of the phone near the contactless reader.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why was my Apple Pay payment declined even though the card was added?

Adding a card and approving an individual transaction are separate steps. The card issuer approves each payment. Check the terminal, the accepted card network, and your card’s available funds or credit, then contact the issuer if necessary.

Does Apple Pay share my card number with the store?

No. Apple Pay uses a device-specific Device Account Number and a transaction-specific security code rather than sending the physical card number to the merchant.

The Bottom Line

Add the card in Wallet > Add Card, complete your bank’s verification, and use the button shortcut at checkout: double-click the side button for Face ID or the Home button for Touch ID. Authenticate, hold the top of the iPhone near the contactless reader, and wait for the checkmark. If setup or payment fails, the card issuer—not Apple—usually controls the approval.
