Do Boycotts Work? What Target and Tesla’s Sales Shifts Show

Boycotts can shift purchases and impose costs, but a company’s weak quarter does not prove a boycott caused it. Target’s traffic and sales later improved, while Tesla’s deliveries rebounded, underscoring the need to consider other causes.

Boycotts can affect a company’s sales, but a disappointing quarter is not proof that a boycott caused it. Target’s 2025 results showed weaker traffic and comparable sales during a period that included a 40-day boycott, tariff uncertainty, lower consumer confidence and softer discretionary spending. Target later reported traffic growth in the first quarter of 2026.

Tesla presents a similar problem. Its deliveries fell year over year in the first quarter of 2025, amid criticism of Elon Musk and other business pressures, but deliveries rebounded in 2026. For consumers deciding whether to participate in a boycott—or investors trying to interpret one—the useful question is not simply whether sales fell. It is whether the campaign caused a measurable, lasting change after competing explanations are considered.

What happened to Target’s traffic and sales?

Target’s measurable downturn occurred primarily in 2025, not as a continuously worsening trend. The figures below come from Target’s earnings releases and annual-report data.

Period Comparable sales Traffic or other detail
Q1 2025 Down 3.8% Comparable store sales down 5.7%; digital comparable sales up 4.7%
Full-year 2025 Down 2.6% Traffic down 2.2%; average transaction amount down 0.4%
Q1 2026 Up 5.6% Traffic up 4.4%; digital sales up 8.9%

Target’s annual-report data show full-year 2025 net sales of $104.78 billion, down 1.7% from 2024. Its Q1 2025 earnings report covered the period ending May 3, after the boycott began on March 5. That timing means the results captured part of the campaign, but they did not isolate its effect.

The boycott was organized by Atlanta-area pastor Jamal Bryant after Target rolled back or narrowed parts of its diversity, equity and inclusion program. As reported by the Associated Press, it was planned as a 40-day campaign during Lent. Target executives acknowledged backlash related to the changes, but the company did not publish a figure showing how much of the sales decline came specifically from boycotters.

That distinction matters. A retailer can lose traffic because customers object to its policies, because shoppers are cutting back on nonessential purchases, because prices have risen, or because a competitor has a better offer. Several of those things can happen at once.

Also, “traffic” must be defined carefully. Target’s reported traffic is a company financial metric. Third-party estimates of visits to store locations may use different data, time periods and definitions. They should not be treated as interchangeable with Target’s reported traffic or sales.

What happened to Tesla?

Tesla also experienced a period of weaker consumer demand alongside multiple possible causes. Tesla’s reporting shows it delivered 336,681 vehicles in Q1 2025, compared with 386,810 in Q1 2024—a decline of about 13%.

Criticism of Musk’s political activity contributed to calls for a Tesla boycott and may have affected some consumers’ willingness to buy or publicly associate with the brand. But, as the Associated Press reported, Tesla also faced an aging vehicle lineup, intensifying competition from BYD and other electric-vehicle manufacturers, the expiration of a U.S. electric-vehicle tax credit and changes in product availability and incentives.

Tesla’s later delivery releases argue against describing the decline as a boycott-caused collapse. Tesla delivered 358,023 vehicles in Q1 2026, up 6% from a year earlier, and reported 480,126 deliveries in Q2 2026, compared with 384,122 in Q2 2025—about 25% higher. The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) reported that battery-electric vehicles accounted for 20% of European Union registrations through May 2026, up from 15.3% a year earlier. Tesla’s performance therefore reflects not only consumer sentiment, but also the growth of the overall EV market and stronger competition within it.

So, do boycotts work?

Sometimes—but “work” can mean several different things:

  1. Changing individual purchases: A person may stop buying from a company immediately.
  2. Reducing short-term sales: Enough customers may switch to alternatives to affect a weekly or quarterly result.
  3. Changing corporate policy: A company may reverse a decision to protect revenue, its brand or employee morale.
  4. Creating lasting reputational damage: The brand may lose customers even after the original campaign ends.

A boycott does not need to bankrupt a company to have an effect. It may shift a product launch, change advertising, influence hiring or make executives reconsider a controversial policy. Conversely, a campaign can generate attention without producing a lasting financial impact.

Research points to highly variable results:

  • A 2026 University of Iowa study using store-foot-traffic and payment-card data from more than 500 firms found that negative ESG news generally produced marginal effects, with traffic often returning to normal within six weeks. The study identified exceptions, including Target and Budweiser, and found that lost shoppers were frequently replaced by new ones.
  • A peer-reviewed study published in Marketing Science on the 2020 Goya boycott found that a counter-campaign, or “buycott,” outweighed the boycott. Goya sales temporarily rose 22%, including a 56.4% increase in heavily Republican counties, before the effect faded within about three weeks.
  • A 2023 study in the Journal of East Asian Studies on the 2012 China-Japan dispute found much longer-lasting effects in China’s automobile market. Japanese-brand vehicle sales fell substantially, particularly in cities with anti-Japanese demonstrations, and the losses persisted for several years.

These cases suggest that a boycott is more likely to have a durable effect when the product is visible, substitutes are easy to find, the issue is politically or socially important, the campaign continues long enough to alter habits, and consumers face social pressure for continuing to buy.

Why most boycotts struggle to sustain momentum

Customers have existing habits

Switching is easiest when a substitute is obvious. A shopper can replace one retailer with another, but the decision becomes harder when a product is uniquely available, cheaper than alternatives or embedded in a routine.

Boycotts can trigger a buycott

Opponents of a boycott may deliberately purchase more from the targeted company. In a politically polarized market, the number of people motivated to support a brand can offset the number trying to avoid it.

Companies have many customers

A campaign may be highly visible online while representing only a small percentage of total shoppers. New customers, occasional customers and customers who do not follow the controversy can replace those who leave.

Other business variables move at the same time

Sales can change because of prices, promotions, inventory, product quality, store openings, economic conditions, interest rates, tax credits and competitors’ launches. That makes causal claims difficult from one quarter of data.

How to judge whether a boycott is having a financial effect

Consumers and investors can use a more disciplined checklist:

  1. Check the measurement. Is the claim about revenue, comparable sales, transactions, store visits, deliveries, social-media sentiment or survey responses? These are different metrics.
  2. Check the time period. Match the campaign’s start and end dates with the company’s reporting period. A quarterly decline may include only part of a boycott—or none of it.
  3. Look for a comparison group. If every retailer or EV maker weakened during the same period, an industry-wide slowdown may explain part of the result.
  4. Separate correlation from causation. A boycott can occur at the same time as declining sales without being the main cause.
  5. Watch for persistence. A one-week dip is evidence of attention. Repeated declines across several periods, followed by management changes or weaker customer retention, provide stronger evidence of a lasting effect.
  6. Account for substitutes and counter-campaigns. A boycott is easier to sustain when customers can switch brands and when supporters of the company are not mobilized to buy more.

What this means for your personal finances

A boycott can be a legitimate values-based spending decision, but it should be treated as a consumer choice rather than a guaranteed investment thesis.

If you stop shopping at a retailer, compare replacement prices rather than assuming the alternative is cheaper. If you switch from one EV brand to another, compare the total cost of ownership: purchase price, financing, insurance, charging, maintenance, tax credits and resale value.

Investors should be especially cautious about trading solely on boycott headlines. A company’s stock price reflects expected future cash flow, not just the current campaign. Review earnings releases, comparable sales, unit deliveries, margins and management guidance. A sales decline that reverses in the next two quarters has a different financial meaning from a persistent fall in customer retention and profitability.

For Target and Tesla, company reports show periods of weaker demand and real consumer backlash. They do not establish that either boycott alone caused the decline. Target later reported stronger traffic and comparable sales, while Tesla’s deliveries rebounded in the first half of 2026.

FAQ

Did the Target boycott cause Target’s 2025 sales decline?

The boycott may have contributed, but Target’s public results do not isolate its effect. The company also faced weaker discretionary spending, lower consumer confidence and tariff uncertainty. Target’s annual-report data show full-year 2025 comparable sales fell 2.6%, while traffic fell 2.2%; Target reported that in Q1 2026 traffic increased 4.4% and comparable sales rose 5.6%.

Did a Tesla boycott cause Tesla’s sales decline?

There is no public company data that quantifies the boycott’s precise effect. Tesla deliveries fell in Q1 2025, but the company also faced an aging lineup, stronger competition, changes to EV incentives and other market factors. Tesla’s delivery releases show deliveries rose year over year in Q1 and Q2 2026.

What makes a boycott more likely to succeed?

A boycott is more likely to have a lasting effect when the issue is salient, the product is highly visible, substitutes are available, the campaign lasts long enough to change habits and consumers face social or reputational pressure for continuing to buy.

Should I sell a stock because of a boycott?

Not based on the headline alone. Check whether the campaign is affecting comparable sales, customer retention, margins and management guidance over multiple reporting periods. Also consider broader industry conditions and whether the company has credible substitutes, pricing power and a recovery plan.

The Bottom Line

Boycotts can change purchasing behavior and impose real costs, but many short campaigns produce limited or temporary effects. Target’s 2025 weakness and Tesla’s 2025 delivery decline occurred alongside consumer backlash, yet neither company’s public results prove that a boycott alone caused the change. Target’s reports show later improvement in traffic and comparable sales, while Tesla’s delivery releases show a rebound in the first half of 2026. The strongest evidence of success is not a viral hashtag or one poor quarter—it is a sustained loss of customers, revenue or profitability after other explanations have been tested.
