Qualcomm Warns AI Data-Center Demand Is Tightening Phone Memory Supply

AI data centers are tightening the wider memory supply chain, not taking RAM out of existing phones. Here is what Qualcomm’s warning could mean for smartphone prices, configurations, and buyers.

Qualcomm warned on February 4, 2026, that memory availability and pricing—particularly for DRAM—could constrain smartphone production in coming quarters. The warning points to a real supply-chain squeeze, but it does not mean AI data centers are taking RAM chips out of phones: the pressure comes from competition for manufacturing capacity and memory supply.

What Qualcomm warned—and what it did not

During its fiscal first-quarter 2026 earnings call, Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon said handset production would be constrained in coming quarters by memory availability and pricing, particularly for DRAM. The company attributed the uncertainty to memory suppliers directing capacity toward high-bandwidth memory (HBM) for AI data centers. Qualcomm made the remarks in an earnings and outlook context, not in a separate announcement that phone RAM was about to disappear. Qualcomm’s February 4, 2026, call materials provide the primary context.

Qualcomm repeated the concern in its fiscal second-quarter 2026 materials: handset manufacturers remained cautious about production amid difficult memory-market conditions. That is a warning about the ability or willingness of phone makers to build devices at planned volumes—not a prediction that consumers will find empty shelves. Qualcomm’s Q2 FY26 call materials document the follow-up.

How AI demand can affect phone memory

AI servers need memory that can move large amounts of data quickly. HBM, which is stacked and packaged close to AI accelerators, provides that bandwidth. Data centers also use conventional DRAM for server systems and NAND flash for persistent storage. Smartphones use different products, including low-power DRAM (LPDDR) for system memory and NAND flash for internal storage.

These products are not interchangeable, but their supply chains are connected. HBM is made using DRAM technology and requires advanced manufacturing, packaging, and testing. Micron has described a 3-to-1 production trade ratio between HBM and DDR5, with the ratio rising for future HBM generations. That is an industry-level capacity trade-off—not a claim that each HBM package physically replaces three phone-memory chips. The same capacity and supplier-allocation pressures can tighten the availability of conventional DRAM and LPDDR. Micron’s fiscal Q1 2026 prepared remarks discuss the trade ratio and tight conditions across DRAM and NAND.

Which phone components are exposed?

Component What it does in a phone Why it matters here
System memory (LPDDR) Supports multitasking, app retention, camera processing, gaming, and on-device AI. It is DRAM, so it can face pressure when suppliers prioritize other DRAM products and customers.
Internal storage (NAND, commonly used with UFS) Stores apps, photos, video, and other files when the phone is off. It is not RAM, but Micron has also described tight NAND conditions, which may affect storage costs or availability.
Application processor, such as a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip Runs the phone’s computing tasks and works alongside memory and other components. It is a separate component. A phone maker needs memory and other parts as well as a processor to complete a device.

Qualcomm sells processors and related technology; it is not the memory supplier in this account. If its handset customers cannot secure memory at workable prices—or choose to build fewer phones—Qualcomm can face weaker handset-chip demand even if Snapdragon processors are available.

Which phones may feel the pressure most?

  • Budget phones: They are more exposed because memory costs can take a larger share of a low-priced device’s component budget, leaving less room to absorb increases. Possible responses include higher prices, fewer configurations, or reduced production.
  • Mid-range phones: Manufacturers may raise prices, adjust specifications, or extend the time between refreshes.
  • Premium phones: Larger margins, supply agreements, and production priorities can provide a cushion, but premium models are not immune if LPDDR remains tight.
  • High-memory configurations: Phones with unusually large RAM capacities can face greater component-cost pressure, including models designed to support memory-intensive AI features.

The effect will vary by company, model, region, and supplier agreement. A vertically integrated manufacturer such as Samsung may have different access to memory than a buyer that depends entirely on outside suppliers, but internal supply does not guarantee protection across every product or market. Transcript coverage of Qualcomm’s Q1 FY26 call discusses the possibility of different positioning for Samsung.

What phone buyers could notice

The most plausible consumer effects are commercial and gradual, not a sudden absence of RAM. A manufacturer might absorb some additional cost, alter product plans, change configurations, or limit discounts. The impact on a particular phone’s retail price cannot be calculated from Qualcomm’s warning alone: component costs do not pass through one-for-one to consumers.

  1. Smaller discounts or higher prices, especially on lower-cost devices.
  2. Fewer budget models or fewer memory and storage configurations.
  3. More phones retaining an older processor, design, or other components rather than receiving a full refresh.
  4. Delayed launches, lower inventories, or differences in availability between regions.
  5. In a more severe case, reduced smartphone production and shipments.

These are possible responses, not confirmed outcomes for every manufacturer. Qualcomm’s warning establishes pressure and production caution; it does not establish that consumers will face empty shelves.

Could on-device AI add to demand?

Potentially. AI features that run directly on a phone can benefit from greater memory capacity and bandwidth, adding to long-term demand for mobile memory. Micron has said AI-enabled features in smartphones and other consumer devices support memory-content growth. The relationship is two-sided: some on-device processing can reduce reliance on cloud inference for particular tasks, but that does not remove the present manufacturing and allocation pressures. Micron’s fiscal Q3 2026 prepared remarks discuss its supply outlook and AI-related memory demand.

How long could the squeeze last?

Qualcomm did not give a definitive end date. In prepared remarks dated June 24, 2026, Micron said shortages would take considerable time to improve. It said industry supply could improve gradually in 2028, while noting it lacked visibility on when supply would fully catch up with demand. That is a supplier’s forecast, not a promise that phone memory will remain short until 2028 or that phones will be unavailable during that period. Micron’s Q3 FY26 remarks set out those qualifications.

The path depends on factors including new production capacity, HBM yields and product transitions, AI-server demand, smartphone demand, and how suppliers allocate output. Those factors can ease or intensify pressure; the available company outlooks do not establish a single date when the market will normalize.

Should you buy a phone now?

Do not panic-buy solely because of Qualcomm’s warning. If you need a phone and find one that meets your needs at a good current price, buying can make sense. Someone shopping for a budget model may have more reason to monitor prices and availability than someone considering a premium device, but no tier is guaranteed to be unaffected.

  • Compare the RAM and storage configuration you will actually use; a larger number is not automatically worth paying more for.
  • Consider a last-generation flagship if it offers better value than a newly repriced budget phone.
  • Check software-support duration, warranty, carrier compatibility, and repairability alongside the memory specification.
  • Make the decision using current local prices and stock, which can vary by model and region.

Micron has also reported that its 1-gamma 16Gb LPDDR5X began a high-volume ramp at a leading smartphone OEM and that 24Gb LPDDR5X was being sampled to multiple smartphone customers. This shows continued mobile-memory product development, but it does not establish how much supply any particular phone maker will receive. Micron’s fiscal Q3 2026 results describe those product updates.
