Best PayPal Alternatives: Compare Payment Platforms by Use Case

Stripe fits flexible online payments, Square suits in-person businesses, Shopify Payments serves Shopify stores, and Wise Business handles international transfers. Compare them by fees, payout needs, and business model.

The best PayPal alternative depends on what you need to accept: Stripe is the strongest all-around choice for customizable online payments and subscriptions; Square is a better fit for in-person businesses; Shopify Payments is designed for Shopify stores; and Wise Business is for international transfers, not customer card checkout. For many businesses, the practical answer is to pair a checkout processor with a separate service for cross-border payouts.

These services solve different problems, so compare them by business model, customer payment methods, country, transaction size, payout needs, and total fees—not by one advertised percentage.

Choose the kind of replacement you need

Start with the job you want the service to do. A processor that handles card checkout is not automatically a good POS system, subscription platform, or international-transfer account.

  • Website checkout: Consider Stripe for customization, Square Online for a Square-centered business, or Shopify Payments if you already run your store on Shopify.
  • In-person sales: Square is a natural starting point for retailers, restaurants, mobile sellers, and service businesses. Stripe Terminal and Shopify POS are alternatives when their wider ecosystems fit better.
  • Invoices or payment links: Stripe and Square can collect payments without requiring a custom-built checkout; PayPal remains another option if its customer familiarity is useful.
  • Subscriptions or usage-based billing: Stripe Billing is one option. Shopify merchants can use compatible subscription apps. Digital-product businesses that want a merchant of record should compare that model separately: it can change who handles tax and merchant responsibilities.
  • International bank transfers and currency conversion: Wise Business is designed for multicurrency money movement and payouts, rather than serving as a general-purpose card checkout.
  • Large or complex international operations: Ask custom-priced processors such as Adyen or enterprise plans from payment providers about local acquiring, settlement, risk controls, and contract terms. Public flat rates may not describe the price or implementation burden you would receive.
  • Resilience against account disruption: A second processor may help only if your business is eligible and able to operate and reconcile both accounts. Keep a conventional business bank account, a cash reserve, and documentation for fulfillment, refunds, and source of funds.

PayPal alternatives at a glance

The pricing examples below are US-specific signals from the providers’ published pages, not like-for-like quotes. Rates, availability, plans, and eligibility vary by country and payment type. Check the provider’s current terms before switching.

Service Best suited to Published US pricing signal Important limitation
Stripe Online checkout, software businesses, subscriptions, and flexible integrations Domestic online cards: 2.9% + $0.30; other payment methods and add-ons have separate charges. More technical setup; international payments, billing, disputes, and faster payouts can add costs.
Square Retail, restaurants, appointments, mobile sales, and POS Square Free has no monthly subscription cost; processing and optional plans or hardware are separate. Fees vary by plan and payment type; complex software or marketplace needs may call for another provider.
Shopify Payments Merchants already using Shopify US card rates depend on the Shopify subscription plan. Country availability and eligibility apply; it is not a standalone option for non-Shopify businesses.
Wise Business Multicurrency balances, international transfers, and supplier or contractor payouts US page lists a one-time $31 setup fee, sending and conversion fees from 0.57%, and $6.11 for USD wire or SWIFT receipts. Not a full consumer-facing card checkout or subscription processor; transfer costs vary by currency and rail.
Custom-priced processors High-volume or operationally complex merchants Pricing is negotiated; a comparable public rate is not stated. May require sales review, underwriting, implementation work, or contractual commitments.

PayPal itself does not have one universal merchant rate. Its US fee documents distinguish payment types: examples include 2.99% plus a fixed fee for standard card payments through invoicing, 3.49% plus a fixed fee for PayPal Checkout, Guest Checkout, or Pay with Venmo through invoicing, and 1% for Pay by Bank, capped at $10 per transaction. Check the US business fee page and US merchant-fee document for the terms that apply to your account.

What the main alternatives do well—and where they fall short

Stripe: flexible online payments

Stripe is a strong choice when you need hosted checkout, payment links, invoicing, APIs, subscriptions, multiple payment methods, or platform tools. It also offers in-person payments through Terminal. Its breadth makes it useful for online-first businesses, SaaS companies, and marketplaces, but it can require more technical work than an all-in-one POS system.

Stripe’s published US standard pricing lists domestic online card payments at 2.9% + $0.30, international cards at an additional 1.5%, currency conversion at an additional 1%, ACH Direct Debit at 0.8% capped at $5, and in-person Terminal card payments at 2.7% + $0.05. It lists a $15 dispute-received fee; the $15 manual countering fee is returned for disputes won under its listed standard pricing. Instant payouts are listed at 1.5%, with a $0.50 minimum. Standard core pricing has no setup or monthly fee, but products such as Billing, Tax, or other add-ons may cost extra. See Stripe’s pricing page for current terms.

Stripe is not automatically the cheapest option for every ticket size or volume. International-card, conversion, billing, dispute, and instant-payout charges can change the effective cost, and high-volume merchants should ask about custom pricing.

  • Use the, easy-to-use, and customizable POS to get started.

Square: payments and tools for in-person businesses

Square combines POS hardware and software with online payments, invoices, and tools for businesses such as retailers, restaurants, salons, and appointment-based services. Square Websites support Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Afterpay, subject to the product’s current terms. The main advantage is an integrated operating setup; some advanced features require paid plans, and the system is less suited to a highly customized SaaS or marketplace architecture.

Square says its Free plan has no monthly subscription cost and that businesses pay processing fees when they take payments. Its US pricing page lists free next-business-day transfers to an external bank and charges extra for instant transfers. Its support page says international cards can incur an additional 1.5% fee relative to the account location. Rates vary by payment type and plan, and Square directs businesses processing more than $250,000 annually to ask about custom pricing. Check Square pricing, its fee details, and supported website payment methods.

Shopify Payments: native for Shopify stores

If you already operate on Shopify, Shopify Payments keeps payment administration, checkout, payouts, and reporting within the Shopify ecosystem. Availability depends on the merchant’s country or region, and US card rates depend on the Shopify plan. Shopify’s documentation says Stripe is not activated as a separate gateway in supported regions where Shopify Payments is offered; payment management takes place inside Shopify. See Shopify’s gateway availability guidance and US Shopify Payments documentation.

It is a poor fit if you do not use Shopify or want to avoid the cost and constraints of a full commerce platform. Compare the subscription plan, card rate, possible third-party transaction fees, apps, and POS needs together—not just the processing rate. Shopify Payments’ availability and eligibility rules also matter before migrating.

Wise Business: international money movement

Wise Business can hold multiple currencies, provide receiving details, convert funds, and send international transfers. It can suit freelancers, agencies, exporters, and businesses paying overseas contractors or suppliers. It is not a substitute for card acquiring when ordinary website customers need to pay by card, nor does it provide the same checkout and recurring-billing role as a processor.

Wise’s US pricing page lists a $31 one-time setup fee, sending and conversion fees from 0.57%, and a $6.11 fee for receiving USD wire or SWIFT payments. Fees vary by currency and transfer rail; some listed domestic non-SWIFT, non-wire receipts can be free. Wise says volume discounts may apply above $25,000 or equivalent. These money-movement charges are not directly comparable with a card-processing rate. See Wise Business pricing for details.

Custom-priced providers: for scale and complexity

Large merchants should evaluate providers such as Adyen and enterprise plans from processors based on local acquiring, payment-method coverage, settlement currencies, risk tools, marketplace support, and negotiated pricing. A public small-business rate is not enough to judge these arrangements; ask about minimums, contract terms, reserves, implementation costs, and who owns each operational responsibility.

A wallet is not the same thing as a processor

Apple Pay and Google Pay are customer payment methods or wallet layers, not full merchant-processing replacements. A business typically offers them through Stripe, Square, Shopify Payments, or another payment setup. Venmo is part of the PayPal ecosystem, so it is not an independent choice if the goal is to reduce reliance on PayPal. Stripe’s payment-method information and Square’s website payment documentation show how wallets fit into broader payment platforms.

Compare total cost, not just the headline rate

A useful estimate starts with the transactions you actually process. Include the percentage and fixed fee, payment mix, monthly software costs, international-card and conversion fees, payout speed, hardware, billing add-ons, disputes, and refund policy. A lower percentage can be outweighed by a larger fixed fee on small payments; on larger payments, a percentage difference has more impact.

Illustrative US card examples

Using Stripe’s published standard US domestic online-card rate of 2.9% + $0.30, and excluding all extras, the processing fee would be:

Payment amount Illustrative fee What the example leaves out
$20 $0.88 Any product add-ons, dispute, international-card, or conversion charges.
$100 $3.20 Any product add-ons, dispute, international-card, or conversion charges.
$1,000 $29.30 Any product add-ons, dispute, international-card, or conversion charges.

These are arithmetic illustrations, not a claim that Stripe is cheaper than PayPal or any other provider. PayPal’s fee for a given payment depends on its specific product and transaction type. ACH may cost less than a card transaction, but settlement timing, fraud exposure, dispute rights, and customer willingness differ. Wise transfer and conversion fees belong to a different type of transaction and should not be compared as if they were checkout-acquiring rates.

Build a monthly estimate from your own mix

  • Count monthly transactions and average ticket size; fixed fees weigh more heavily on low-value payments.
  • Separate online, in-person, invoice, bank debit, and international-card volume.
  • Add currency conversion, cross-border settlement, or payout conversion where relevant.
  • Include subscription, POS, ecommerce plan, app, hardware, and billing costs.
  • Account for dispute fees, refund treatment, and any paid faster-payout option.
  • At higher volume, request a quote and compare the full contract rather than extrapolating a public flat rate.

Match the platform to your business model

Business type Starting point What to check
Freelancer or consultant Stripe or Square for invoices and payment links; Wise Business for international bank transfers. Client payment preferences, currency conversion, invoice workflow, and payout destination.
Ecommerce store Stripe or a platform-native processor such as Shopify Payments. Checkout integration, international methods, plan and app costs, refunds, and third-party transaction fees.
Retail, restaurant, or appointments Square; consider Shopify POS or Stripe Terminal when the wider platform is a better fit. Hardware, plan features, inventory, scheduling, online sales, and card-present rates.
SaaS or recurring services Stripe with Billing or another processor and billing stack that fits the product. Retries, tokenized payment details, customer card updates, proration, usage billing, coupons, taxes, and add-on fees.
Digital products sold globally Compare a conventional processor with a merchant-of-record option. Who is seller of record, who handles tax obligations, and how refunds and disputes are handled.
Marketplace or platform Evaluate Stripe Connect or another platform-payment provider. Seller onboarding and KYC/KYB, split payments, tax forms, payout timing, refunds, disputes, and negative balances.
International B2B A processor for customer checkout plus Wise Business or another suitable transfer service for payouts. Supported currencies, account details, wire or SWIFT charges, conversion rates, and recipient-country coverage.
High-risk or restricted industry Seek a provider that explicitly underwrites the industry. Eligibility, reserves, contract terms, prohibited activity rules, dispute exposure, and support model.

Businesses in areas such as supplements, financial services, adult content, gambling, crypto, travel, ticketing, firearms, or other regulated or dispute-prone sectors may not qualify for ordinary aggregated processing. Public pricing should not be treated as confirmation of eligibility.

Payout speed and cash flow need their own comparison

Do not assume that one platform always pays faster than another. The first payout, ongoing schedule, weekends and holidays, payment method, country, account history, bank verification, and risk review can all affect when money is usable. Stripe says funds first appear in a pending balance and describes country-specific payout schedules; eligible US businesses may qualify for faster ACH settlement under certain conditions. Its balance documentation also notes that refunds, fees, and chargebacks affect available funds. See Stripe’s balance and payout documentation.

Square says transfers to an external bank account are free on the next business day, with instant transfers available for a fee. The exact option and eligibility should be confirmed in the account. In either system, refunds or disputes can reduce the available balance, while a reserve or delayed payout may affect cash flow.

Disputes, reviews, and account holds are not eliminated by switching

A card-network chargeback is different from a platform complaint or dispute workflow, though both can result in a refund or funds being withheld. Processors may request evidence such as delivery confirmation, customer communication, terms accepted at purchase, or proof of service. Keep clear product descriptions, refund policies, order records, tracking, and support correspondence so you can respond promptly.

Stripe’s published standard pricing lists a $15 dispute-received fee and a $15 manual fee to counter a dispute, with the latter returned for a won dispute. Square’s dispute walkthrough describes a process involving the merchant, customer, Square, financial partners, card networks, and issuing bank. No provider can promise zero chargebacks or eliminate the merchant’s underlying liability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Major payment platforms can review unusual transaction patterns, new businesses, rapid growth, elevated refunds, restricted products, or inconsistent business details. Stripe, Square, Shopify Payments, and other aggregators still apply underwriting and risk controls; a second aggregator is not a guaranteed emergency fallback.

Keep PayPal, replace it, or run both?

Replacing PayPal does not always mean removing it. A store may use Stripe, Square, or Shopify Payments for card and wallet processing while retaining PayPal as a checkout option for customers who prefer it. That can preserve a familiar payment choice, but adds another reconciliation, refund, dispute, and support workflow. PayPal remains part of the transaction path for PayPal-specific methods, so keeping it does not eliminate that provider’s role.

Before adding a second processor, confirm that your business is eligible on both, that your checkout or POS can route transactions correctly, and that your staff can reconcile separate settlements. Multiple accounts can mean separate customer records, integrations, reports, and dispute deadlines.

Switching checklist

  1. Confirm eligibility: Check your merchant country, industry, legal entity, and supported payment methods with the new provider.
  2. Verify the account: Complete identity and business checks before launch; use a bank account that matches the business entity.
  3. Map the full price: Include processing, software, FX, international cards, disputes, hardware, and payout options.
  4. Configure customer-facing details: Set statement descriptors and publish clear refund, shipping, privacy, and contact policies.
  5. Test the entire payment lifecycle: Run a successful payment, a failed payment, a refund, and the dispute-response workflow where available.
  6. Confirm settlement: Check bank verification, first-payout expectations, ongoing timing, and any faster-payout fee.
  7. Prepare the transition: Export transaction history and, where applicable, customer, invoice, and subscription records. Not every saved payment credential can be transferred between providers.
  8. Run a controlled overlap: Reconcile both systems separately during migration and retain a reserve for pending refunds and disputes.
  9. Close only when ready: Keep PayPal open until recurring customers, pending transactions, refunds, and disputes are resolved.
