Dave Thomas’s total net worth when he died has not been established by a reliable public accounting in the sources available here. The best-documented figure is narrower: Forbes valued his 4.3% stake in Wendy’s International at $135 million in August 2001. That was the value of one holding at a particular time—not a calculation of all his assets minus debts, and not a verified estimate of his estate in January 2002.
What was Dave Thomas’s net worth when he died?
A precise total is not established by the cited sources. Forbes’s $135 million figure is often relevant to the question, but it describes the estimated value of Thomas’s Wendy’s shares in 2001. It does not establish how much he was worth at death, which would require a broader accounting of assets and liabilities at that later date.

Forbes also discussed investment losses, loans and possible liabilities in the same article. Those details underscore why a share valuation cannot be treated as a complete net-worth figure. The available sources do not provide a full public estate accounting.
What did the $135 million figure measure?
In an article published August 20, 2001, Forbes attributed a 4.3% Wendy’s International shareholding to Thomas and valued that stake at $135 million. The figure is a dated valuation of an ownership interest in the company. It is not his total wealth, a confirmed inheritance amount, or a current value.

To compare any other estimate responsibly, check its valuation date and whether it covers only company shares or all assets and liabilities. A figure described simply as “net worth” may not be comparable to Forbes’s valuation of one holding.
Why was Dave Thomas associated with Wendy’s?
Thomas founded Wendy’s, and the company says its first restaurant opened in Ohio in 1969. His connection to the business explains the significance of the shareholding Forbes valued, but the company’s history does not by itself establish the size of his full estate.

The Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption says Thomas established the foundation in 1992. Wendy’s records his death in January 2002; the Foundation gives the date as January 8, 2002. Neither source supplies a total valuation of his assets at death.

No. The stake valuation and an estate valuation answer different questions. The former estimates the market value of a specified holding in 2001; the latter would need to account for all relevant property and debts at death in 2002. The cited material does not establish that broader figure.

Nor does the 2001 amount establish what the shares were worth at death or what beneficiaries ultimately received. Those claims would require evidence tied to the later date and a documented accounting.
