Re:

Best time to buy an iPhone – and when not to

The best iPhone buying window depends on whether you want the newest model, an outgoing standard iPhone, or the lowest total cost. Here is when to buy—and when to wait.

The best time to buy an iPhone depends on what you are optimizing: the newest model, the lowest upfront price, an unlocked device, or the smallest total cost over two years.

For most shoppers, the calendar has two useful windows: late September through October for a cheaper outgoing standard model, and Black Friday through Cyber Monday for carrier credits, retailer gift cards, and trade-in promotions. The worst routine purchase is a current flagship bought in late August or early September, just before Apple’s usual September launch cycle.

There is one important exception: if your current phone has a strong trade-in offer today, waiting for a theoretical discount may cost more than buying now.

The best time depends on the iPhone you want

Your priority Best buying window What to look for
Newest iPhone After the September announcement Launch promotions, trade-in value, and availability
Best standard-model value Late September through October Price reductions on the outgoing iPhone and retailer clearance
Lowest effective price Black Friday and Cyber Monday Carrier bill credits, retailer gift cards, and trade-in offers
Lowest price without needing the newest model When suitable Certified Refurbished stock appears Battery, warranty, storage, and return terms
Best deal for your particular situation When your trade-in offer is unusually high The value of your current phone after fees and restrictions

Late September and October: usually best for the outgoing standard iPhone

Apple’s recent flagship cycle has repeatedly centered on September. The iPhone 14 was announced on September 7, 2022, and became available September 16. The iPhone 15 was announced September 12, 2023, and became available September 22. The iPhone 16 became available September 20, 2024, while the iPhone 17 lineup was announced September 9, 2025, and became available September 19.

#1 Best Overall
Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

That pattern makes the weeks after a new launch a sensible time to shop for the previous-generation standard iPhone. Apple may lower its price, and retailers may clear stock. The discount is not guaranteed, however, and color or storage choices can become limited.

As of August 9, 2026, Apple lists the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, but not the previous-generation Pro models. That is a useful warning: if you want an outgoing Pro, do not assume Apple will keep it around for a later official price cut. Retailers may still have inventory, but the remaining selection can be uneven.

Black Friday: better for promotions than Apple-store discounts

Black Friday and Cyber Monday can produce the lowest effective cost, especially if you are willing to use a carrier or retailer. The offer may take the form of:

  • monthly carrier bill credits;
  • a high-value trade-in promotion;
  • a retailer gift card;
  • a discount on an older model; or
  • a “free” phone after meeting the promotion’s requirements.

That is different from Apple simply reducing the price of the newest iPhone. During the 2025 Black Friday period, major carriers advertised large discounts and free-phone offers tied to eligible trade-ins, new lines, plan requirements, or bill credits, while Apple generally did not directly discount its newest flagship models.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before calling a carrier offer a bargain, calculate the full commitment. A phone advertised as free may still require you to pay the retail price through the carrier and receive reimbursement over several years. Leaving early can stop the credits while the remaining device balance becomes due.

Carrier-deal checklist

  1. Write down the required monthly plan and compare it with the plan you would otherwise choose.
  2. Confirm whether the offer requires a new line, a switch from another carrier, or an upgrade.
  3. Check the exact trade-in model and condition requirements.
  4. Count the number and value of monthly credits.
  5. Ask what happens to the credits if you cancel, switch carriers, or pay off the phone early.
  6. Add taxes on the full retail price, activation charges, upgrade fees, and any required accessories.
  7. Check whether the phone is locked and when it becomes eligible for unlocking.

Apple’s carrier-offer terms note that credits depend on carrier qualification and availability, and sales tax may be assessed on the phone’s full retail price.

Certified Refurbished: a good price-focused alternative

Apple Certified Refurbished stock can make sense if you care more about cost than owning the newest generation. Apple says refurbished iPhones include a new battery, a new outer shell, genuine Apple replacement parts as needed, full functional testing, a new box and accessories, and a one-year limited warranty. They also qualify for free returns under Apple’s applicable return policy.

The tradeoff is selection. Model, color, and storage availability can change without notice. Check the listing carefully rather than waiting indefinitely for one exact configuration. Refurbished inventory can be especially worth checking after a new iPhone generation launches.

When your trade-in is unusually valuable

A phone’s effective purchase price is:

new-phone cost + financing or plan costs − trade-in value − promotion or gift card value.

That calculation can favor buying before the usual sale period. Apple’s store currently advertises up to $695 for eligible iPhone trade-ins toward selected models, while carrier promotions can advertise larger credits under different eligibility rules. Neither number should be treated as a guaranteed value for your device.

Trade-in quotes can be revised. Apple’s trade-in terms allow the quote to change if the phone’s condition differs from your description, Find My iPhone has not been removed, or the phone is not received within 14 days after the trade-in box is delivered. Photograph the phone’s condition, back up your data, remove your accounts, and ship it on time.

If you are using the iPhone Upgrade Program, do not send the phone through the ordinary Apple Trade In flow. Apple arranges that program’s trade-in separately.

When not to buy an iPhone

Do not buy a current flagship just before September

Late August and early September are the riskiest routine buying weeks if you want the newest Pro or flagship model. You may pay full price for a phone that will soon be replaced, while missing launch promotions or the chance to buy the new model at a similar starting price.

The September cycle is a historical pattern, not a promise. If your phone is failing, your work depends on it, or your current trade-in value is unusually high, the cost of waiting can outweigh the possible savings.

Do not assume Apple will match a retailer’s deal

Apple’s direct pricing is generally more stable than retailer and carrier pricing. The larger savings usually come from credits, trade-in promotions, gift cards, older-generation clearance, or refurbished stock. Compare the final cost—not just Apple’s listed price—with the terms of the alternative.

  • This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
  • There will be no visible cosmetic imperfections when held at an arm’s length.

  • Product may come in generic Box.

Do not buy a carrier “free” phone without valuing flexibility

A carrier promotion can be financially attractive if you already use the required plan and expect to stay for the entire credit period. It is less attractive if you may move, downgrade, or want to sell the phone unlocked.

Buying through Apple is generally unlocked, but an iPhone purchased using an AT&T Installment Plan through Apple is locked to AT&T for the term of that installment agreement. If flexibility matters, select an unlocked configuration and read the financing terms before checkout.

What the current Apple lineup costs

Apple’s U.S. store lists the following starting prices as of August 9, 2026:

Model Starting price
iPhone 17 Pro or Pro Max $1,099
iPhone Air $999
iPhone 17 $799
iPhone 17e $599
iPhone 16 or 16 Plus $699

These are before trade-in. Apple may also show a connectivity discount that requires activation with an eligible carrier at purchase. The discount is unavailable if you select “Connect to a carrier later” or use a prepaid plan. Confirm the price shown for your exact configuration and payment choice.

Financing considerations

The iPhone Upgrade Program is a 24-month, 0% APR arrangement that includes AppleCare+ coverage. To upgrade, you generally need at least 12 equivalent installment payments, an account in good standing, continuous AppleCare+ coverage, and a phone in acceptable physical and operational condition. After six regular payments, you may become upgrade-eligible by paying enough to reach the equivalent of 12 payments. A new credit check is required for the replacement phone.

Best Value
Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max, 256GB, Blue Titanium - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • 6.7inch Super Retina XDR display. ProMotion technology. Always-On display. Titanium with textured matte glass back. Action button
  • Dynamic Island. A magical way to interact with iPhone. A17 Pro chip with 6-core GPU
  • Pro camera system. 48MP Main | Ultra Wide| Telephoto. Super-high-resolution photos (24MP and 48MP). Next-generation portraits with Focus and Depth Control. Up to 10x optical zoom range
  • Emergency SOS via satellite. Crash Detection. Roadside Assistance via satellite
  • Up to 29 hours video playback. USB-C, Supports USB 3 for up to 20x faster transfers. Face ID

That program can be convenient, but “0% APR” does not mean free. Include AppleCare+, the required monthly payment, and the likelihood that you will keep upgrading when comparing it with buying a phone outright and keeping it for four or more years.

A practical decision process

  1. Set a target. Decide whether you want the newest model, a standard model, a Pro model, or simply the lowest reliable cost.
  2. Check the launch calendar. If it is late August or early September and your phone works, wait for Apple’s announcement before buying a current flagship.
  3. Get written trade-in quotes. Compare Apple’s quote with carrier and retailer offers, including condition rules and expiration dates.
  4. Compare total cost. Add the phone, required plan, taxes, fees, insurance, and financing costs. Subtract only trade-in value and credits you are realistically likely to receive.
  5. Protect flexibility. Choose unlocked purchasing if you may change carriers or sell the phone.
  6. Buy when the numbers work. Do not postpone a strong, time-limited trade-in offer merely because Black Friday or September is approaching.

FAQ

What month is usually cheapest to buy an iPhone?

Late September and October are often good for the previous-generation standard iPhone after Apple’s new models launch. Black Friday and Cyber Monday can be cheaper overall when carrier credits, retailer gift cards, and trade-in promotions are included.

Should I wait until September to buy an iPhone?

Wait if you want the newest flagship and your current phone is reliable. If you have an unusually valuable trade-in offer, a failing phone, or a genuinely low current price, buying sooner may cost less overall.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are iPhones cheaper on Black Friday?

They can be, but the savings often come through carrier bill credits or retailer gift cards rather than a direct Apple discount. Check plan requirements, trade-in rules, taxes, fees, and the cost of leaving early.

Is it better to buy an iPhone from Apple or a carrier?

Apple is generally the simpler choice for an unlocked phone and maximum carrier flexibility. A carrier can be cheaper if you already want its plan, qualify for the trade-in offer, and will stay long enough to receive every monthly credit.

The Bottom Line

Buy after the September launch if you want the newest iPhone. Shop in late September or October for an outgoing standard model. Compare Black Friday deals for the lowest effective price, but treat carrier credits as a long-term contract rather than instant savings. Apple Certified Refurbished is worth checking when price matters most.

The best deal is the one that still looks good after adding the required plan, fees, taxes, trade-in risk, and the cost of losing flexibility.
