Amazon Cash is a way to turn physical cash into an Amazon Gift Card Balance at a participating store. You identify your Amazon account with a barcode or, where supported, a linked phone number, then pay the cashier cash; the balance can be used for eligible Amazon purchases. Amazon still documents the service, but availability for shoppers and participating locations should be checked for your country and retailer.
What Amazon Cash is—and what it is not
Amazon Cash is a cash-to-account balance-loading service. Instead of entering a credit or debit card online, you take cash to a participating brick-and-mortar retailer and ask to add it to the Amazon account identified in the transaction. Amazon records the value as Amazon Gift Card Balance, not as money in a bank account. Amazon’s Balance Load documentation describes the service and its transaction flow.

It can suit people who prefer cash, do not have a bank account or card, receive cash income, or want to cap Amazon spending at a set amount. It is not limited to people without bank accounts: Amazon describes it as useful for cash-preferring customers. Amazon’s Incentives API overview describes the service as no-fee and intended for such customers.
- It is not a bank account, debit card, cash-withdrawal service, or general-purpose digital wallet.
- It is not Amazon Pay. Amazon Cash loads an Amazon balance; Amazon Pay lets customers use payment methods saved to their Amazon account at participating third-party websites.
- It is not a way to receive cash back from Amazon or send unrestricted money to another person.
How Amazon Cash works
- Sign in to the Amazon account you want to fund. If Amazon Cash is offered for your account and location, obtain its personalized barcode from the Amazon app or website. The reviewed Amazon documentation does not establish a current universal menu path.
- Go to a retailer that currently supports Amazon Cash. Ask the cashier to confirm the service is available at that location before proceeding.
- Present the barcode for scanning, or provide the phone number linked to your Amazon account if that identification method is supported.
- Tell the cashier how much you want to load. Confirm the amount and account identification before handing over cash.
- Pay the cashier. The retailer’s point-of-sale system processes the transaction, and the value is intended to reach the account’s Amazon Gift Card Balance in real time.
- Check the balance and keep the receipt until the funds appear or any printed claim code is redeemed.
Barcode or phone number?
A personalized barcode is associated with the Amazon account and is scanned at the register. A phone-number flow relies on the retailer’s system matching the number you give to an account. If the number cannot be matched, some implementations may issue a printed Amazon Gift Card claim code instead of crediting the balance automatically. Support for each identification method varies by country and retailer; see Amazon’s Balance Load documentation.

When does the balance appear?
Amazon describes successful balance loads as real-time, with the balance available immediately after processing. That is the intended result, not a guarantee that every transaction will be instant: a store or network outage, an account-identification error, or a delayed submission can interrupt the flow. Keep the receipt until the balance is confirmed.
U.S. limits, fees, and store availability
Amazon’s partner documentation specifies a $5 minimum and $500 maximum per load in the United States. Those are per-transaction figures, not a stated daily, weekly, or total account limit. Limits and procedures can differ by country.

Amazon describes Amazon Cash as a no-fee way for customers to add money to an Amazon balance. That statement is about Amazon Cash as documented; it does not mean other cash-loading products, such as prepaid-card reloads, are free. Confirm the amount displayed at the register before paying.
The service depends on participating brick-and-mortar locations and current point-of-sale support. Amazon’s public partner documentation does not provide a universal, current U.S. consumer store list on the pages reviewed. Retailer names that appeared in historical coverage—including 7-Eleven, CVS, Walgreens, and others—should not be treated as proof that a particular store supports Amazon Cash now. Check the Amazon app or site where available, and ask the retailer before making a special trip. The Congressional Research Service report provides historical context, not a current store locator.

What the balance can buy—and what it cannot
Amazon Cash adds value to Amazon Gift Card Balance; it does not create a cash-equivalent payment card. The balance is generally usable for eligible purchases on Amazon.com and certain related sites under Amazon’s gift-card terms. It normally cannot be withdrawn as cash, transferred to a bank account, or used as a general-purpose card. Check the current Amazon Gift Card Terms and Conditions for exclusions before loading a large amount.
Amazon’s partner documentation says Amazon Cash transactions are non-refundable except as required by law. Load only an amount you expect to spend on eligible Amazon purchases, and verify the account before the cashier completes the transaction. Amazon’s Balance Load documentation also advises retaining the receipt until the transaction is confirmed.

If an Amazon Cash transaction goes wrong
The barcode will not scan
- Turn up your screen brightness and display the barcode directly in the Amazon app or website; do not use a cropped or unclear image.
- Ask whether the cashier can use the linked phone number, if that option is supported.
- Confirm that the location still supports Amazon Cash. Do not hand over cash until the cashier confirms the amount and account identification.
Your phone number is not recognized
Check that you gave the number associated with the intended Amazon account. If a barcode is available, use it instead. If the register prints a claim code, keep it private and redeem it through Amazon’s gift-card redemption process if the load was not applied automatically. A phone-number mismatch may result in a claim code in implementations that support that outcome.
You paid, but the balance has not appeared
Keep the receipt and check the Amazon Gift Card Balance. Look for a printed claim code as well. Contact the retailer first for help documenting the point-of-sale transaction; if it cannot resolve the issue, contact Amazon customer support with the receipt and transaction details. Do not discard a receipt simply because the load is expected to be immediate.

The money went to the wrong account
Amazon Cash is account-linked, so check the account and phone number before the sale is completed. A completed load may be difficult to reverse. Amazon’s documentation includes a void operation for retailer/API implementations, but it is not a consumer self-service refund button.

An Amazon gift card is the closest alternative when Amazon Cash is unavailable or you want to give someone Amazon credit: it has a similar restricted-use result, but the recipient redeems a card or code rather than loading cash through an account-linked store transaction. Amazon describes in-store gift-card purchases and Amazon Cash as separate use cases on its Incentives API page.
Is Amazon Cash still available?
Amazon’s public developer documentation continues to describe Amazon Cash as a balance-loading capability. It says the service is known by different names in different markets, including Amazon Cash in the United States, Mexico, Japan, and Canada. The documentation is written for distribution partners and retailers, however, and does not establish that a consumer can use the feature at every former partner or any particular store today. Availability should be verified in the relevant country and at the retailer before relying on it.
A secondary reference has claimed that the U.S. consumer-facing program was deprecated around May 2024, but that claim is not confirmed by the Amazon documentation cited here; see the attributed secondary reference. The practical conclusion is to distinguish Amazon’s ongoing technical documentation from confirmed consumer access at a specific location.
