Apple vice president of global sourcing and supply management Dan Rosckes was reported on October 7, 2024, to be retiring after 24 years at the company. Bloomberg-sourced coverage said longtime deputy David Tom was expected to succeed him. Apple declined to comment, and the reports did not give Rosckes’s exact final day, so the retirement and succession were reported developments rather than details confirmed in an Apple announcement.

Who was Dan Rosckes at Apple?

Rosckes’s formal title was vice president of global sourcing and supply management. That makes “global supply chain chief” a convenient but broad shorthand: his remit centered on hardware procurement and supplier relationships, not every part of Apple’s operations or manufacturing network.

His organization obtained components, negotiated supplier agreements and helped secure the parts needed to support Apple’s product launches. Rosckes had led the procurement group alongside Tony Blevins; after Blevins left in 2022, Rosckes reportedly took sole charge. At the time of the October 2024 reports, he reported to operations chief Sabih Khan. These details come from 9to5Mac’s summary of Bloomberg reporting.

Who was expected to succeed him?

Bloomberg-sourced coverage identified David Tom, Rosckes’s longtime deputy, as his expected successor. The reports described this as an internal handoff, not an outside hire or an Apple-issued appointment announcement. Tom had joined Apple in 2003 and had been responsible for sourcing silicon, wireless components and batteries, according to the syndicated Bloomberg report and 9to5Mac.

  • CABLE LENGTH — 2 meters (6 feet).

Promoting a deputy already working across major component categories could preserve institutional knowledge and limit disruption during the handoff. That is a reasonable inference from Tom’s reported experience, not a published statement of Apple’s succession rationale.

Why Apple’s procurement leadership matters

Apple’s purchasing scale gives its sourcing decisions consequences beyond the procurement department. Component availability and supplier agreements can affect whether products are ready for launch, how much manufacturing inputs cost and how much bargaining power suppliers have. Those costs and supply conditions, in turn, can influence product availability and margins.

Bloomberg-derived coverage characterized Apple as an aggressive negotiator that uses its purchasing scale to support product margins. That does not establish that Rosckes personally determined Apple’s profitability, or quantify the effect of his work. It explains why a senior sourcing handoff matters to investors and suppliers even if consumers are unlikely to notice it directly.

Apple’s 2025 Supply Chain Progress Report describes broader company programs and expectations for suppliers, including responsible sourcing and environmental and labor matters. The report provides context on the wider supply chain; it does not confirm Rosckes’s retirement or Tom’s appointment.

How the change fit Apple’s leadership picture

The procurement story followed Blevins’s 2022 departure from the group Rosckes had shared, according to Bloomberg-sourced reporting. Apple also announced in August 2024 that Luca Maestri would transition from chief financial officer to a different role, with Kevan Parekh becoming CFO effective January 1, 2025; see Apple’s announcement.

Dan Riccio’s reported retirement was a separate event: he led Apple’s Vision Products Group, not procurement. The overlap in executive news is not evidence that Apple was carrying out a coordinated leadership shake-up. The Rosckes report concerned one sourcing leadership position, not the replacement of Apple’s operations organization, its manufacturing partners or its overall supply-chain strategy.
