Pinterest can be a practical acquisition channel for personal-finance publishers, coaches, budgeting-app companies, and financial-service businesses. People often use it to find ideas they intend to act on later—such as debt-payoff plans, budget templates, side-hustle guides, and investing explainers. That makes it different from a purely chronological social feed: a useful Pin can continue sending discovery traffic after publication.
The strongest results come from treating Pinterest as a search-and-discovery system connected to a properly measured website. Set up the business account, claim the domain, publish genuinely useful vertical creative, and judge performance by outbound clicks and conversions—not impressions alone.
1. Decide what Pinterest should do for your finance business
Start with one measurable business outcome. A personal-finance site might use Pinterest to:
- send readers to budgeting, debt, tax, or investing articles;
- grow an email list with a budget spreadsheet or financial checklist;
- sell a course, template, book, or subscription;
- generate qualified leads for a financial coaching service; or
- support product discovery for a financial app or other eligible merchant.
Map each objective to a destination page. A Pin about the snowball debt method should lead to a relevant debt-payoff guide or calculator, not a generic homepage. A Pin promising a monthly budget template should open a page where the template is immediately available.

Finance content also needs a higher standard of accuracy than casual lifestyle content. Date-sensitive tax thresholds, contribution limits, interest rates, and legal requirements should be checked before creating creative around them. Make the date or jurisdiction clear when it affects the advice, and avoid presenting general educational content as individualized financial advice.
2. Create or convert the right Pinterest account
A Pinterest business account provides access to Business Hub, Pinterest Analytics, scheduling, and advertising tools. A new business account can currently be created only from a desktop device.
Create a new business account
- Go to Pinterest and click Sign up.
- Choose Create a business account.
- Enter your email, password, and age, then click Create account.
- Complete Build your profile and Describe your business.
- Indicate whether you intend to run ads.
- Select where you want to start, or close the setup panel to enter the business account.
Convert an existing personal account
On desktop, use Profile picture at bottom-left → Settings → Account management → Convert to a business account → Convert account.
Your Pins and followers remain, but the account must be public. Pinterest no longer allows a new personal account to be linked to a business account as a separate connected account. If you are starting from scratch for a finance brand, a standalone business account is usually cleaner than mixing personal saves with company content.
3. Build a profile that explains the financial resource
Use a recognizable name, profile image, concise description, and website URL. State who the account helps and what it publishes—for example, “Plain-English budgeting and debt-payoff guides for U.S. households.” Do not imply that you provide regulated advice or services you do not actually offer.
Create public boards around distinct search intents. On desktop, go to Profile → Saved → plus icon → Board. Useful board themes might include:
| Audience need | Board example | Potential content |
|---|---|---|
| Managing spending | Monthly Budgeting | Budget categories, sinking funds, pay-period plans |
| Reducing debt | Debt Payoff Strategies | Snowball versus avalanche explainers, payoff trackers |
| Increasing income | Side-Hustle Ideas | Startup costs, pricing, tax-record reminders |
| Building knowledge | Personal Finance Basics | Emergency funds, credit scores, compound interest |
Write descriptive board titles and descriptions using the language your readers actually search. Secret boards are useful for planning, but they are not public discovery assets.
4. Claim your website before publishing seriously
Claiming a website connects Pins saved from that site to your Pinterest profile and provides analytics for content originating there. You can claim a domain, subdomain, or subpath only if you own it and can edit its source code. A website can be claimed by only one Pinterest account. Etsy, eBay, and Amazon stores generally cannot be claimed.

Pinterest offers three verification methods:
Rank #2
- HTML tag: add Pinterest’s tag inside the page’s
<head>section. - HTML file: upload Pinterest’s file to the website’s root folder.
- DNS TXT record: add the supplied TXT value to your domain’s DNS records.
DNS changes can take up to 72 hours to propagate. An HTML file placed in a subfolder will fail because Pinterest checks the root folder. After successful verification, Pinterest says the tag, file, or TXT record can be removed, although leaving a documented verification method in place may make future troubleshooting easier.
5. Install tracking before you optimize
If your goal is traffic, leads, or sales, install measurement before promoting content. Pinterest can use the Pinterest Tag, Conversions API, or an approved partner integration.
Google Tag Manager setup
In Pinterest, go to Menu at top-left → Business → Conversions → Get started, select the connection source, click Continue, choose Skip, then select Google Tag Manager → Continue.

The base tag must fire on every website page and must load before event tags. For each event:
- In Google Tag Manager, click Add a new tag.
- Open Tag Configuration and select Pinterest Tag.
- Enter the tag ID shown on Pinterest’s Conversions page.
- Select the event, such as page visit, add to cart, or checkout.
- Add product IDs, currency, values, or other parameters where required.
- Under Advanced Settings → Tag Sequencing, make the base tag fire before the event tag.
- Choose the appropriate trigger and publish the container after testing.
A common failure is installing event code without the base code. That produces incomplete or unusable tracking. For commerce measurement, checkout events must include currency, and product-related events must include product IDs where required.
For a content publisher, also use consistent UTM parameters so Google Analytics can distinguish Pinterest traffic by campaign and creative. Test the entire journey: Pin click, landing-page load, email signup, checkout, and confirmation page.
6. Create Pins for finance searches
On desktop, select Create → Create Pin. A Pin can include an image or video, title, description, board, destination link, and—where available—topic tags.
Use a vertical, mobile-friendly design. Pinterest recommends a 2:3 aspect ratio for images and videos. Standard organic video creative should generally run about 15–60 seconds. Use a clear headline on the creative itself, such as “A 5-Step Emergency Fund Plan,” rather than an abstract slogan.
Every Pin should answer three questions quickly:
- What is this? Name the financial problem or outcome.
- Who is it for? Clarify the audience when relevant, such as freelancers, students, or first-time budgeters.
- What happens after the click? Make the destination and next step match the promise.
Place relevant terms naturally in the Pin title, description, board title, board description, and destination URL. Pinterest’s ad specifications list a title limit of 100 characters and a description limit of 800 characters; the first 40 title characters may be visible in feeds. Descriptions generally do not appear in the home or search feed, but Pinterest uses them for relevance and delivery. Do not write a description assuming all 800 characters will be visible.
Rank #3
Use original variations instead of repeatedly recycling one image. For a single article on sinking funds, test different useful angles: “Sinking Funds Explained,” “Budget Categories to Add,” and “How to Save for Irregular Bills.” Keep the landing page accurate for each version.
A published Pin’s image, video, or audio cannot be replaced later. You can edit descriptive details such as the title or board, so check the creative, URL, spelling, and financial figures before publishing.

Use Create → Create Pin, upload the creative, complete the Pin details, and choose Publish at a later date. Current standard scheduling limits are:
| Limit | Current rule |
|---|---|
| Advance scheduling | Up to 30 days ahead |
| Future Pins | Up to 10 scheduled Pins |
| Scheduling flow | One Pin at a time |
| After scheduling | Date, title, board, description, and link can be edited |
| Creative | Image or video cannot be replaced |
There is no official universal posting frequency, hashtag count, or algorithm shortcut that guarantees reach. A smaller finance site is better served by a sustainable stream of relevant, original Pins than by a volume target it cannot maintain.
8. Use Pinterest Trends without misreading the data
Open Menu at top-left → Analyze performance → Pinterest Trends. Change the market through Pinterest Trends → Region. Trends can show historical search, save, and shopping patterns for up to the previous two years, depending on region and feature availability. Audience-specific trends cover the previous 90 days, update daily, and may require a sufficiently large audience.
To compare terms, use Pinterest Trends → Search trends and enter a keyword. You can compare up to four keywords. The graphs are normalized and indexed from 0 to 100. A score of 100 is the highest point on that selected graph—not 100 searches, 100%, or a measure of audience size.

Search results reflect the region selected in Trends, while audience-specific trend information reflects the account’s worldwide audience. For a U.S.-specific tax article, a U.S. trend view is more relevant than a worldwide comparison.
Look for seasonal timing, then publish early enough for a reader to discover and use the information. Validate any apparent trend against your own Analytics and search data; a rising keyword is not automatically a profitable or suitable topic.
9. Add Rich Pins when the website supports them
Rich Pins pull structured information from a website and can update when the source page changes. Current types include Article, Recipe, and Product Rich Pins. For a personal-finance publisher, Article Rich Pins are the most relevant option.
Rank #4
Pinterest supports Open Graph or Schema.org markup in the page’s <head>. Basic Article Open Graph fields include:
Recommended Free Tools
<meta property="og:title" content="Title of your Article">
<meta property="og:description" content="Description of your article">
<meta property="og:type" content="article">
Synchronization can take up to 24 hours. Pinterest does not classify pages that are mostly images with little text as articles for Article Rich Pins. Product Rich Pins require accurate, current information such as title, product type, price, currency, and in-stock status.
10. Measure the metrics that correspond to revenue
Open Menu at top-left → Analyze performance → Overview. Review overall performance, top Pins, top boards, and filters. The most important distinctions are:
| Metric | What it tells you | What it does not tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Impressions | How often a Pin or ad appeared on screen | Whether someone visited your site |
| Saves | How often users saved the Pin to a board | Immediate revenue |
| Pin clicks | Clicks that open the Pin closeup | Off-platform traffic |
| Outbound clicks | Actions leading to a destination outside Pinterest | Completed signup or purchase |
| Save rate | Saves divided by impressions | Absolute audience size |
| Pin click rate | Pin clicks divided by impressions | Website conversion rate |
For video, Pinterest also reports video views, 10-second plays, plays to 95%, total play time, total audience, and engaged audience. A high view count with few outbound clicks may mean the video is entertaining but its call to action or destination is weak.
Real-time metrics are estimates covering the last 48 hours. Analytics can show approximately the past year and a half, depending on the selected view. By default, Analytics emphasizes published Pins; enable Include saved Pins to include saved Pins not linked to claimed domains.
For a finance site, use a funnel review:
- Which topics earn impressions and saves?
- Which creative generates outbound clicks?
- Which landing pages keep visitors engaged?
- Which pages produce email signups, applications, or purchases?
- Which revenue or lead source justifies making more Pins?
11. Sell products through catalogs
Retail catalogs require a Pinterest business account, a claimed website, the Pinterest Tag, and a website that meets merchant guidelines, including accessible contact, shipping, and refund information.
Catalog feeds can be supplied by URL or uploaded manually in TSV, CSV, XML (including RSS 2.0 and Atom), or Google Sheets format. Required retail fields are:
id
title
description
link
image_link
price
availability
item_group_id
item_group_id is required when products have multiple variants. Pinterest supports up to 20 million products per retail catalog. Hosted feeds must be directly accessible to Pinterest without IP or SSH-key whitelisting.
The Verified Merchant Program is separate from ordinary merchant approval. Among its additional requirements are a business account at least three months old, a website at least nine months old, a claimed website, at least 75% of catalog products successfully ingested, and recent page-visit, add-to-cart, and checkout events. Checkout events need currency, and product IDs must be included where required. The program is region-limited, eligibility changes can take up to 48 hours to appear, and failing to maintain the requirements can lead to suspension.

12. Consider paid Pinterest campaigns after organic validation
Create an advertiser account through Menu at top-left → Manage business → Business Manager → Ad accounts → Create ad account. Enter the name and country, then click Create. Pinterest currently allows up to 50 ad accounts per business account. Choose the billing country and currency carefully; selecting the wrong combination generally means creating a new ad account.
Current campaign objectives include:
- Brand awareness;
- Video completion;
- Consideration;
- Leads; and
- Sales.
The objective affects bidding, optimization, and available formats. Brand awareness uses CPM-style optimization. Video completion optimizes for the 95% completion marker. Consideration can optimize for Pin clicks or outbound clicks; Performance+ bidding is required when optimizing for outbound clicks. Leads and Sales can use target-CPA-style optimization, with Performance+ also required for outbound-click optimization in these objectives.
Available formats include standard image, video, carousel, collections, shopping, showcase, and quiz ads, but availability varies by country and objective. Standard non-Sales carousels use 2–5 images; catalog-based Sales carousels can use 2–10 images or videos. Standard carousel images support 1:1 or 2:3 ratios. Do not build a campaign around a format until it appears in your account and market.
Promote a page with a proven message rather than paying to discover whether the topic is relevant at all. Set a conversion event, verify the landing page, and compare cost per qualified lead or sale—not just cheap clicks.
13. Give agencies and employees limited access
For a team, use Business Manager rather than sharing a password. To create an organization structure, go to Menu at top-left → Manage business → Business Manager → Business settings → Create business hierarchy. A hierarchy requires at least one Organization Manager, and child accounts retain their existing ad accounts, partners, and employees.
The Publisher role can create, edit, organize, schedule, and delete Pins and boards and view individual Pin statistics. Pinterest uses preset permissions rather than fully customizable access, so assign the least powerful suitable role and review access when a contractor leaves.
Common Pinterest marketing mistakes
- Confusing Pin clicks with website visits: only outbound clicks lead off Pinterest.
- Publishing outdated finance claims: add dates and update or retire time-sensitive Pins.
- Using a generic destination: match the landing page to the creative’s promise.
- Installing only event code: the base Pinterest Tag must fire first.
- Reading Trends as search volume: the 0–100 score is normalized and relative.
- Assuming all ad formats are available: features vary by market and account.
- Deleting content casually: deleted Pins cannot be recovered; deleted boards can be recovered for only seven days.
- Relying on saved Pins alone: Pinterest recommends fresh, original content and reviewing the response to similar Pins.
FAQ
Is Pinterest useful for a personal-finance website?
Yes, particularly when the site publishes practical, searchable resources such as budget plans, debt-payoff guides, calculators, checklists, and templates. Use a clear destination link and measure outbound clicks and conversions rather than impressions alone.
What is the difference between a Pinterest Pin click and an outbound click?
A Pin click opens the Pin closeup inside Pinterest. An outbound click takes the user to a destination outside Pinterest, such as your website. They are separate Analytics metrics.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →How often should a business publish Pins?
Pinterest does not promise a universal posting frequency or fixed number of hashtags that guarantees reach. Publish a sustainable flow of relevant, original Pins, then create more of the topics and formats that generate meaningful saves, outbound clicks, and conversions.
Can I advertise financial content on Pinterest?
Pinterest offers campaign objectives including awareness, video completion, consideration, leads, and sales, but advertising availability and policy requirements vary by market and account. Ensure claims are accurate, landing pages are compliant, and conversion tracking works before spending.
The Bottom Line
Pinterest marketing works best as a measured content-discovery funnel: publish useful finance content, connect every Pin to a relevant page, claim the domain, install the base tag before event tracking, and use Trends as relative planning data rather than raw demand. Start with organic creative and a small number of clear audience problems, then scale the topics that produce qualified outbound traffic, signups, leads, or sales.
