Nvidia denied reports on December 12, 2024, that it had cut or planned to cut product supply to China. The company said China remained an important market and that it intended to keep serving Chinese customers. That statement rebutted a rumor; it did not guarantee unrestricted shipments. A separate Chinese antitrust investigation was announced three days earlier, while U.S. export controls and later licensing decisions imposed real, product-specific limits on what Nvidia could sell into China.
What Nvidia denied in December 2024
Reports circulating on Chinese social media claimed Nvidia had stopped, or was preparing to stop, supplying products to China. Nvidia rejected the claim in a Chinese-language clarification reported by Tom’s Hardware. It said China was an important market and that it remained committed to providing Chinese customers with products and services.
The clarification represented Nvidia’s public position at the time. It was not independent confirmation of shipment volumes, stock at distributors, retail availability, or future product allocations. Nor could a company statement override export-control laws or guarantee that every Nvidia product would be available to every Chinese customer.
Why the rumor seemed plausible
One detail cited as the rumor spread was that Nvidia’s official Tmall storefront appeared to have no products listed. That could prompt questions about retail availability, but an empty online store alone does not establish a company-wide supply suspension. Products may reach customers through other sales channels, and a storefront listing is not a complete picture of inventory or distribution.

The timing also drew attention. China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) had announced an investigation into Nvidia on December 9, 2024, and the supply-cut reports followed on December 12. The events were related in the sense that both concerned Nvidia’s China business, but the available accounts do not establish that the probe caused Nvidia to reduce supply. Nvidia expressly denied a China-wide cutoff.
What China’s antitrust investigation concerned
The December 2024 investigation was not simply a response to the supply rumor. SAMR was examining suspected violations of China’s antimonopoly law and conditions imposed when it approved Nvidia’s acquisition of Mellanox Technologies, a networking-equipment company, for approximately $6.9 billion. SAMR’s later enforcement review records the December 9 announcement.

The commitments date to the merger review
When SAMR conditionally approved the acquisition, it identified potential competition concerns involving GPU accelerators, specialized networking equipment, and high-speed Ethernet adapters. Its conditional approval decision set behavioral commitments for the combined company. The later investigation examined whether Nvidia complied with those conditions, including obligations relevant to how products were supplied and how customers were treated.
An investigation is not the same as a final finding
In December 2024, the matter was an investigation. On September 15, 2025, SAMR announced a preliminary finding that Nvidia had violated antimonopoly law and the conditions attached to the Mellanox approval. Nvidia’s later filing described the regulator’s preliminary position as connected to the company’s compliance with U.S. export controls and its resulting supply of degraded products. The procedural distinction matters: the 2024 announcement was an investigation, and the 2025 announcement was a preliminary finding, not a basis to recast the original rumor as proven fact. See SAMR’s September 15, 2025 announcement.

Why Nvidia’s China supply later faced real constraints
The rumor denial and the later supply problems are different stories. U.S. export controls shaped which advanced chips Nvidia could ship to China, and licensing requirements could restrict or delay sales even when Nvidia wanted to serve customers. Chinese regulatory scrutiny and product-specific limits also affected the market. None of this means every Nvidia product category was subject to the same restrictions.
- August 2022: U.S. controls targeted advanced semiconductors and products related to supercomputing destined for China.
- October 2023: The United States expanded and updated licensing requirements, including product thresholds.
- April 2025: Nvidia said the U.S. government informed it that H20 chips and certain products with comparable bandwidth characteristics required export licenses for China and some other destinations. Nvidia later recorded a $4.5 billion charge related to H20 excess inventory and purchase obligations after demand diminished.
- August 2025: Nvidia said some H20 shipments could proceed under U.S. licenses. Separately, after reports that it had asked suppliers to suspend H20-related work, Nvidia said it continually managed its supply chain according to market conditions; the Reuters report carried by Investing.com attributed the supplier report to The Information.
- February 2026: Nvidia said licenses permitted small amounts of H200 products to be shipped to specific China-based customers, subject to conditions. Its filing said it had not generated revenue under that program at the time and that imports remained uncertain.
These disclosures come from Nvidia’s FY2026 Form 10-K and its second-quarter FY2026 results. They show why “Nvidia kept supplying China” is too broad unless the product, customer, date, and applicable license are specified. Later filings also described difficulty designing a data-center product acceptable to both U.S. and Chinese authorities, while some gaming and workstation products not subject to the same controls could still be shipped.

How to read the December 2024 denial
- It rejected a voluntary, China-wide cutoff claim. Nvidia said it intended to continue serving Chinese customers.
- It did not establish normal market access. Actual availability depended on product category, customer, distribution channel, export-control licensing, and Chinese regulatory conditions.
- The antitrust probe did not prove a supply cut. The investigation was real and tied to Mellanox merger commitments, but the evidence does not show that Nvidia announced a reduction because of it.
- Later restrictions should not be projected backward. The H20 and H200 developments occurred after the December 2024 rumor and arose in a changing regulatory environment.
