Re:

Best ecommerce platforms of 2026 Tested by our expert

Shopify is the best overall ecommerce platform for most businesses in 2026, but WooCommerce, Wix, BigCommerce, Squarespace, and Square Online can be better fits depending on control, design, catalog complexity, and total fees.

Choosing an ecommerce platform is a business-cost decision, not just a design decision. The advertised monthly subscription is only one line of the budget: payment processing, platform transaction fees, apps, hosting, extensions, tax tools, fulfillment, and plan upgrades can matter more once sales grow.

We compared six leading platforms using their current 2026 pricing, payment rules, commerce features, and the operational work each one leaves to the merchant. Shopify is the strongest all-around choice for most new stores, while WooCommerce offers the most control, Wix is the easiest visual setup, and Square Online makes the most financial sense for retailers already using Square in person.

Best ecommerce platforms of 2026

Platform Best for Starting U.S. price Main financial risk
Shopify Most new and growing businesses $29/month annually for Basic Apps, processing, third-party fees, POS, and tax charges can accumulate
WooCommerce WordPress users and businesses needing control $0 platform subscription Hosting, maintenance, security, extensions, and development are separate
Wix eCommerce Small businesses that prioritize simple design $29/month annually for Core A paid plan is required for payments; provider availability varies
BigCommerce Established stores with large catalogs or multiple sales channels $29/month annually for Core Open Payment Provider fees and revenue-based plan changes from June 1, 2026
Squarespace Design-led brands, creators, and smaller catalogs Varies by account and country Physical and digital products have different transaction fees
Square Online Businesses already using Square POS Free plan available Free still means payment-processing fees; advanced features cost more

1. Shopify: best overall for most businesses

Shopify is the safest default when you want one hosted system for the storefront, checkout, payments, inventory, shipping, tax tools, multichannel selling, and point-of-sale operations. You do not have to assemble and maintain the underlying website stack.

Shopify pricing

With annual billing, current U.S. rates are:

  • Basic: $29 per month
  • Grow: $79 per month
  • Advanced: $299 per month
  • Plus: from $2,300 per month on a three-year term, or $2,500 per month on a one-year term
  • POS Pro: an additional $89 per month per location

Monthly billing is higher: $39 for Basic, $105 for Grow, and $399 for Advanced. The displayed online card rates are 2.9% + $0.30 on Basic, 2.7% + $0.30 on Grow, and 2.5% + $0.30 on Advanced. If you use a third-party payment provider, Shopify lists additional fees of 2%, 1%, and 0.6%, respectively.

Shopify Tax also needs to be included in a 2026 budget. Stores created on or after May 13, 2026 receive Shopify Tax free until reaching a $100,000 lifetime sales threshold in the United States and the rest of the world. After that, Basic, Grow, and Advanced stores are charged 0.35% in applicable regions, capped at $0.99 per order. Older stores use an annual threshold instead.

Useful Shopify admin paths

  • Change plan: Settings > Plan
  • Review tax fees: Settings > Billing
  • Configure payments: Settings > Payments
  • Configure taxes: Settings > Taxes and duties
  • Configure shipping: Settings > Shipping and delivery

Best for: a first store, a growing direct-to-consumer brand, or an owner who values predictable operations over maximum technical control.

Watch out for: the $29 headline price is not your full cost. Paid apps, payment processing, shipping, POS Pro, third-party payment fees, and tax-calculation charges can materially increase the monthly bill.

2. WooCommerce: best for WordPress control

WooCommerce is an open-source commerce plugin for WordPress. The plugin has no platform subscription, but calling the entire store “free” is misleading. You still pay for hosting and a domain, and you may need paid themes, extensions, backups, security tools, maintenance, and developer time.

What WooCommerce costs

WooPayments has no setup fee or monthly subscription. It uses pay-as-you-go pricing, with rates depending on the business location, customer location, currency, and payment method. Other payment processors have their own rates and may require separate configuration.

The financial advantage is control: you can choose your host, payment provider, theme, extensions, and infrastructure. The disadvantage is that you also own the decisions and the failures. A cheap host can create slow checkout pages or downtime; an outdated plugin can cause a payment or compatibility problem; and a security incident can become your responsibility.

WooCommerce setup paths

  1. Activate WooCommerce.
  2. Select Set up my store.
  3. Complete the store profiler.
  4. Use the Store Setup Checklist to add products, set up payments, customize the store, collect sales tax, select shipping options, and launch.

Payment settings are at WooCommerce > Settings > Payments. To reopen the setup wizard, visit a WooCommerce admin page such as WooCommerce > Status, select Help, and choose Setup wizard.

Best for: an existing WordPress site, a technically capable owner, or a business that needs custom workflows and wants to avoid a platform subscription.

Watch out for: the total cost of ownership. Hosting, updates, backups, security, extensions, tax configuration, shipping, and troubleshooting can exceed the cost of a hosted platform.

3. Wix eCommerce: easiest visual setup

Wix is a strong choice for a small business that wants to build a polished website visually without managing hosting or WordPress plugins. It combines general website tools with online selling, which is useful for service businesses, local brands, and small catalogs.

Wix pricing and payment setup

Current U.S. ecommerce plans are $29 per month for Core, $39 for Business, and $159 for Business Elite when billed annually. You can create a site for free, but you need a paid plan to connect a custom domain and accept online payments.

To configure payments, open the site dashboard and go to Settings > Accept Payments. Wix recommends providers based on the business location. Select See More Payment Options to view additional providers.

Payment availability depends on country and business category. Manual payments also require you to update an order’s payment status yourself after receiving the money. Apple Pay’s button appears only to customers using Safari on iOS or macOS, according to Wix’s payment documentation.

Best for: a small business that needs an attractive website and straightforward store rather than a highly specialized commerce operation.

Watch out for: planning around a payment provider that is unavailable in your country or industry. Confirm payment support before committing to a plan or redesign.

4. BigCommerce: best for complex catalogs and multichannel sales

BigCommerce has strong native catalog, B2B, and sales-channel capabilities. It can be financially attractive for established merchants that would otherwise need a large collection of paid Shopify apps or WooCommerce extensions.

BigCommerce’s 2026 pricing change

Plan Annual price TTM GMV limit or threshold Open Payment Provider fee
Core $29/month $30,000 trailing-twelve-month GMV cap 2.0%
Growth $79/month $100,000 TTM GMV cap 1.0%
Scale $299/month $33,333 monthly GMV cap, then 0.9% overage 0.6%
Performance Custom, from $1,499/month Contracted terms No standard fee under contracted terms

The new structure began June 1, 2026. The Open Payment Provider fee applies to eligible orders processed through an open provider. Orders processed through an embedded provider do not incur that fee. This means “no transaction fees” is no longer a complete description of BigCommerce pricing.

BigCommerce calculates thresholds using trailing-twelve-month gross merchandise value after a 10% reduction. It can automatically move a store from Core to Growth after $30,000 TTM GMV and from Growth to Scale after $100,000, with advance notification.

To manage the plan, go to Account > Upgrade Plan.

Best for: a store with a broad catalog, wholesale requirements, international or multichannel selling, or a need for more built-in features.

Watch out for: a payment provider can create two costs: its processing charge plus BigCommerce’s Open Payment Provider fee. Seasonal businesses should also monitor trailing-twelve-month sales, not just the current month.

5. Squarespace: best for design-led brands

Squarespace is appealing when the website and brand presentation matter as much as the cart. It works well for creators, publishers, studios, and smaller product catalogs that need strong content pages alongside commerce.

Squarespace fees in 2026

Squarespace is rolling out Basic, Core, Plus, and Advanced plans in waves. The plan names and offers can therefore vary by account and country. Legacy plans may remain active until a merchant changes plans.

On the newer plans, physical-product commerce transaction fees are:

  • Basic: 2%
  • Core, Plus, and Advanced: 0%

Digital products use a separate schedule:

  • Basic: 7%
  • Core: 5%
  • Plus: 1%
  • Advanced: 0%

That distinction is important for downloads, courses, memberships, and other digital products. A business selling digital goods should not use the physical-product table to estimate costs.

For U.S. Squarespace Payments transactions, the standard domestic-card rate listed for older plans is 2.9% + $0.30. Premium cards, international cards, ACH, Klarna, Afterpay, and currency conversion can have different charges.

Best for: a designer, creator, or small brand whose store has a limited catalog and content-driven sales process.

Watch out for: mixing legacy and current plan assumptions. Check the exact plan displayed inside your account, and model digital-product fees separately from physical-product fees.

6. Square Online: best for Square-centered retail

Square Online is most compelling when the business already uses Square for point-of-sale payments, inventory, customer profiles, or in-person sales. A shared catalog can reduce duplicate data entry and make online and store transactions easier to reconcile.

Square Online pricing and processing

Plan Online card rate In-person card rate
Square Free 3.3% + $0.30 2.6% + $0.15
Square Plus 2.9% + $0.30 2.5% + $0.15
Square Premium 2.9% + $0.30 2.4% + $0.15

Square offers a free online plan, but “free” refers to the subscription, not payment processing. Plus and Premium add subscription costs and more advanced capabilities. Businesses processing more than $250,000 per year can contact Square about custom pricing and processing fees.

Features include pickup and local delivery, shipping labels, fraud controls, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Cash App Pay, Afterpay, abandoned-cart emails, product subscriptions, bundles, and shared online/in-person catalog data.

Best for: a restaurant, market stall, boutique, salon, or retailer already operating on Square.

Watch out for: choosing Square solely because the entry plan is free. Compare the online processing rate, subscription price, fulfillment needs, and the value of its integrated POS system.

How to choose without underestimating the cost

  1. Estimate annual sales and order size. A percentage fee matters more as revenue grows, while the $0.30 portion matters more for low-value orders.
  2. Identify your payment provider. Check whether the platform adds a second transaction fee when you use an external provider.
  3. List required add-ons. Include subscriptions, memberships, bookings, advanced shipping, tax automation, email marketing, reviews, bundles, and marketplace integrations.
  4. Price the work you will perform. WooCommerce may save subscription fees but require paid hosting, maintenance, security, and technical help.
  5. Model the next revenue tier. BigCommerce uses TTM GMV thresholds, while Shopify and other platforms can become more expensive through processing, apps, or feature upgrades.
  6. Separate fixed and variable costs. A useful spreadsheet should include subscription, payment processing, platform transaction fees, app or extension fees, hosting, domain, tax tools, shipping software, and fulfillment.

A simple cost formula

Use this rough annual formula before selecting a platform:

Total platform cost = subscription fees + payment processing + platform transaction fees + apps/extensions + hosting and maintenance + tax and shipping tools.

For example, on a $50 order, a 2.9% + $0.30 processing rate costs $1.75 before any platform transaction fee. A separate 2% platform fee would add another $1.00. That makes the combined payment-related cost $2.75 on that order, excluding monthly subscriptions and other tools.

Our verdict

Shopify is the best ecommerce platform for most businesses in 2026. It offers the clearest path from first product to a larger multichannel operation, provided you budget for apps, processing, payment-provider rules, and Shopify Tax.

Choose WooCommerce when WordPress familiarity and control justify taking responsibility for hosting and maintenance. Choose Wix when visual simplicity matters more than advanced commerce depth. Choose BigCommerce when your catalog, B2B requirements, or sales channels are complex enough to benefit from native tools. Choose Squarespace for a design-first content brand, especially with a small physical catalog. Choose Square Online when your existing retail operation already runs on Square.

FAQ

Which ecommerce platform is best overall in 2026?

Shopify is the best overall choice for most new and growing businesses because it combines storefront, checkout, payments, inventory, shipping, tax, multichannel selling, and POS tools in one hosted platform. Its total cost can rise through apps, processing, third-party payment fees, POS Pro, and Shopify Tax.

Is WooCommerce actually free?

The WooCommerce plugin has no platform subscription, but a working store still requires hosting, a domain, payment processing, security, backups, maintenance, and possibly paid themes or extensions. The software is free; operating the store is not necessarily free.

Which ecommerce platform has the lowest fees?

There is no universal cheapest option. Square Online has a free subscription tier, WooCommerce has no platform subscription, and Shopify starts at $29 per month with annual billing. Payment processing, transaction fees, add-ons, hosting, and sales thresholds can make the total cost higher than the headline price.

Is BigCommerce still free of transaction fees in 2026?

Not always. Since June 1, 2026, self-service BigCommerce plans can charge an Open Payment Provider fee of 2.0%, 1.0%, or 0.6%, depending on the plan. Orders processed through an embedded payment provider do not incur that fee.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Shopify is the strongest default for most merchants, but the right choice depends on the costs you can control and the operational work you are willing to own. Compare at least 12 months of subscription, processing, transaction, app, hosting, tax, and fulfillment costs—not just the advertised monthly plan.
