Google’s $32 billion agreement to acquire cloud-security company Wiz is no longer pending: the deal closed on March 11, 2026. Google’s headline figure was the announced all-cash value, subject to closing adjustments; Alphabet later reported a preliminary accounting purchase price of about $29.5 billion after adjustments and excluding certain post-combination compensation arrangements. Wiz joined Google Cloud and retained its brand.

What happened to Google’s Wiz purchase?

Google announced a definitive agreement to buy Wiz on March 18, 2025, for $32 billion in cash, subject to closing adjustments. The acquisition closed on March 11, 2026. Google said Wiz would join Google Cloud and continue operating under the Wiz brand, with a commitment to serving customers across cloud environments. Google’s announcement and closing announcement establish the headline value and timeline.

It was a major strategic purchase in enterprise cybersecurity, not a consumer-app deal. Google’s rationale centers on cloud and AI security: companies increasingly run applications and data across multiple cloud providers, and security tools that can identify risks across those environments may be valuable even when a customer does not use Google Cloud exclusively.

How much did Google pay: $32 billion or $29.5 billion?

The two figures describe different measures, not necessarily a contradiction. The $32 billion was the transaction value announced in 2025. In its first-quarter 2026 filing, Alphabet reported a preliminary purchase price of approximately $29.5 billion after purchase-price adjustments and excluding post-combination compensation arrangements. The filing’s allocation included substantial goodwill and acquired intangible assets.

Figure What it means
$32 billion Announced all-cash transaction value, subject to closing adjustments, in Google’s March 18, 2025 announcement.
Approximately $29.5 billion Preliminary accounting purchase price reported by Alphabet after adjustments and excluding post-combination compensation arrangements.
$22.689 billion Goodwill in Alphabet’s preliminary purchase-price allocation.
$8.3 billion Acquired intangible assets in the preliminary allocation.

The figures and accounting qualifications come from Alphabet’s first-quarter 2026 Form 10-Q. Goodwill is the portion of an acquisition’s accounting value not assigned to separately identified assets and liabilities; Alphabet said it primarily reflected expected post-acquisition synergies. It is not a separate cash payment on top of the purchase price.

What does Wiz do?

Wiz sells cloud and AI security software. Its platform is positioned to give security teams visibility into risks across cloud infrastructure and applications, then help them prioritize and address exposures. Wiz describes its licensing as modular, with pricing factors that can include workloads, active developers, log ingestion, and sensors; it does not publish a standard price list. Its product family includes Wiz Cloud, Wiz Code, Wiz Defend, Wiz Sensor, and Wiz Go. See the Wiz pricing page for current product and quote information.

The broad category is often called a CNAPP, or cloud-native application protection platform. The term can bundle capabilities that were once sold separately:

Why was Wiz strategically valuable to Google?

Multicloud visibility

Many enterprises use a mix of AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, private infrastructure, and container platforms. A tool that can assess risk across providers may appeal to companies that do not want their security view divided along cloud-vendor lines. Google’s acquisition materials framed Wiz as a way to strengthen security across cloud environments, not just Google Cloud.

Security for cloud-native applications and AI

As applications move into cloud infrastructure and organizations develop AI systems, the number of components security teams must understand grows: workloads, identities, data stores, models, and connections between them. Google has presented the acquisition as an investment in cloud and AI security. The strategic opportunity is to help customers see and manage risks across that expanding environment; the deal itself does not establish that breaches will become less likely.

  • LIGHTS THAT HELP SECURE YOUR LIFE: WiZ uses the power of light to detect, deter, and alert—so that you’re never in the dark, even when you’re not at home.
  • PREVENT, ALERT, AND DETER--WITH WiZ: Light is one of the most effective ways to discourage trespassers. Set your WiZ lights to switch on and off automatically to mimic your presence. When you get a notification of unexpected activity, you can open the camera to get a live view of what’s going on, even when you’re away.
  • ALWAYS KNOW WHAT’S GOING ON: With SpaceSense, every WiZ light is a motion sensor. Get notified via the WiZ app whenever suspicious activity or security threats are detected.
  • TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION: WiZ gives you full control whether at home or away with our integrated security and light control app. Turn on the lights, trigger a light alarm, turn on two-way audio, or activate the WiZ camera to see what’s happening in real time—no matter where you are.
  • SIMPLE, SMART, SECURE: The WiZ indoor camera is the heart of our home monitoring system. Place the camera anywhere and trigger it via motion, sound, or the WiZ app. Turn on night vision to see in the dark, two-way audio to deter or help, and record the evidence.

A stronger Google Cloud security proposition

Adding Wiz gives Google Cloud a broader security offering to present to large enterprises, including those operating across multiple clouds. Alphabet’s reported goodwill, which it primarily attributed to expected synergies, is consistent with Google valuing benefits beyond Wiz’s separately identifiable assets. That is a strategic rationale, not evidence that the acquisition has already increased Google Cloud revenue or margins.

What changed for Wiz after closing?

Wiz became part of Google Cloud and retained its brand. Google’s post-closing statements emphasize cloud and hybrid environments and multicloud security. The available announcements do not establish that Wiz has been fully merged into Security Command Center, that its products have been discontinued, or that customers must move workloads to Google Cloud. Nor do they prove that every feature, contract term, or roadmap commitment will remain unchanged.

What Wiz customers should review

The acquisition does not by itself establish a general price increase, price decrease, or change in customer terms. Because Wiz pricing is quote-based and modular, customers should examine their own agreements and renewal proposals rather than infer a new price from the deal value.

  • Request written confirmation of support for each cloud, region, and product feature you use.
  • Review updated data-processing terms, subprocessors, data-residency commitments, support contacts, and renewal language.
  • Ask how workload, developer, log-ingestion, and sensor counts affect your quote, and whether minimum commitments or bundled discounts apply.
  • Request a current roadmap and clarification of any planned integrations or product packaging changes.
  • Test how Wiz fits with your existing identity, endpoint, SIEM, SOAR, ticketing, and remediation workflows.
  • If vendor independence is important to your governance model, document how Google ownership affects your risk assessment and procurement requirements.

Google Cloud procurement or integration could be convenient for some customers. Others may prefer a provider that is not owned by a cloud hyperscaler. The acquisition makes that a legitimate vendor-governance question, but ownership alone does not establish that multicloud support has ended.

How to compare Wiz with alternatives

There is no universal winner: the right shortlist depends on cloud mix, existing security tools, operational capacity, and whether the priority is posture visibility, active response, or workload protection.

Option May suit What to validate
Wiz within Google Cloud Organizations seeking broad cloud-risk visibility across multiple environments. Current feature parity across clouds, runtime coverage, data controls, contract terms, and commercial changes.
CrowdStrike Falcon Cloud Security Organizations already using CrowdStrike for endpoint, identity, or threat-intelligence operations. Cloud-specific capabilities, runtime needs, integration fit, and a quote. CrowdStrike’s public cloud-security page is quote-based; general Falcon per-device prices are not cloud-security prices. CrowdStrike cloud-security pricing.
Palo Alto Networks Prisma Cloud and related offerings Organizations already invested in Palo Alto Networks security products. Current product scope and packaging, which can evolve, plus integration and operational complexity. Palo Alto Networks cloud security.
Orca Security Buyers seeking an independent cloud-security platform, including an agentless-oriented approach. Coverage of required workloads, runtime and response needs, and commercial terms. Orca Security.
Native AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud tools Organizations concentrated in one cloud that prioritize native integration or procurement. Whether coverage and policy management will be sufficiently consistent if the organization adds another cloud.

Competitor comparisons require care. CrowdStrike, for example, argues in its own Wiz comparison that Wiz is weaker in runtime protection and cross-domain endpoint, identity, and cloud defense. That is a vendor’s competitive claim, not an independent test result. Buyers should verify those capabilities against their own use cases and product demonstrations.

Who should consider Wiz—and who may not need it?

Wiz may be worth evaluating if

  • Your organization operates across several cloud providers or has complex cloud and container environments.
  • Security teams need a shared view of configuration, identity, workload, application, and data risks.
  • You can resource the rollout and remediation work required to turn findings into action.

A different approach may be more suitable if

  • You are a small team running a simple, single-cloud environment and need only a narrow posture or compliance tool.
  • Your main need is endpoint protection rather than cloud infrastructure and application security.
  • You require a security vendor independent of cloud-provider ownership, or need public self-service pricing.
  • Your security team needs proven active prevention or incident-response depth that a posture-focused evaluation would not establish.

For any shortlist, test agentless discovery separately from runtime protection: agentless visibility can make deployment easier, while live detection or prevention may require sensors or agents. Also test developer workflows, identity-path analysis, sensitive-data discovery, Kubernetes coverage, alert volume, and remediation effort with representative workloads.

Why the deal matters beyond Google

The acquisition brings a major cloud provider further into a market where hyperscalers, cybersecurity vendors, and application-security companies overlap. It raises competitive pressure on CNAPP vendors such as CrowdStrike, Palo Alto Networks, and Orca, as well as native cloud-security services from AWS, Microsoft, and Google.

For a buyer, the key distinction is often not which vendor has the longest feature list, but whether one platform fits the environment. A multicloud organization may value a common view across providers; a company standardized on one cloud may prefer native integration. Teams should compare coverage and operational fit rather than assume that Google ownership automatically makes Wiz the best choice—or that it has made Wiz less useful outside Google Cloud.
