Best GPS fleet tracking system of 2026

Samsara is the best GPS fleet tracking system for most fleets in 2026 because it combines vehicle location, routing, maintenance, driver safety, ELD compliance, cameras, and asset tracking in one platform. It is not the cheapest option, however, and Samsara does not publish a standard monthly price.

For a smaller business focused mainly on location tracking and predictable costs, Azuga or Linxup may offer better value. Geotab is stronger for complex integrations, Motive is especially well suited to trucking and ELD-heavy operations, and Verizon Connect is a strong choice for larger field-service and mixed-asset fleets.

The right purchase depends on more than the advertised monthly fee. Hardware, installation, cameras, ELD service, contract length, cellular coverage, and data-export terms can materially change the total cost.

Best GPS fleet tracking systems at a glance

Best for System Main advantage Published pricing
Most fleets needing one platform Samsara GPS, routing, safety, maintenance, ELD, cameras, and asset tracking Quote required
Enterprise customization Geotab Broad hardware, OEM, integration, and privacy options Quote or reseller-based
Safety and ELD compliance Motive HOS, driver identification, coaching, dashcams, and compliance tools Quote required
Complex vehicle and equipment fleets Verizon Connect Mapping, dispatch, reporting, maintenance, and asset tracking Quote required; five-unit minimum online
Transparent safety-focused pricing Azuga Published plans with driver scores and rewards $25–$30 per vehicle/month
Small businesses and no-contract options Linxup Simple GPS tracking, geofencing, maintenance, and proof of service $25 per vehicle/month for GPS tracking

These are editorial recommendations based on documented features and pricing, not an objective ranking. A two-van landscaping company and a 500-truck carrier have very different requirements.

1. Samsara: best all-in-one GPS fleet tracking system

Samsara is the strongest general-purpose choice when a business wants to replace several disconnected tools with one fleet platform. Its telematics products cover GPS tracking, routing and dispatch, commercial navigation, fuel and energy management, maintenance, ELD compliance, cameras, electric vehicles, OEM integrations, and equipment tracking.

The platform can track vehicles, trailers, and sensor-equipped assets. Its ELD connects to the vehicle through the OBD port, and Samsara says its ELD is FMCSA-registered and third-party certified for use in the United States and Canada.

Best for: Delivery companies, contractors, utilities, construction fleets, and trucking businesses that need GPS, safety, compliance, and maintenance in one dashboard.

Financial drawback: Samsara requires a quote. Ask for separate line items for the monthly subscription, tracking hardware, cameras, installation, implementation, ELD features, replacement devices, and early-cancellation charges. A bundled quote may look simple while making it difficult to compare the actual cost of each feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review Samsara’s telematics features.

2. Geotab: best for enterprise fleets and integrations

Geotab is a good fit when the fleet’s main challenge is customization rather than basic location visibility. MyGeotab can combine data from Geotab GO devices, OEM-embedded telematics, and some existing third-party hardware. That matters to companies operating mixed vehicle brands or trying to preserve investments in equipment already installed.

Geotab also has a large integration ecosystem and granular privacy controls. Its Restricted Data Mode can prevent MyGeotab from storing GPS coordinates and/or GPS speed. When that mode is enabled, GPS positions, trips, speed profiles, and GPS-based exceptions are unavailable.

That privacy feature is useful for fleets with employee-monitoring or personal-use concerns, but it can also confuse troubleshooting. A missing trip may result from a deliberate privacy setting rather than a failed tracker.

  • 【5-day Free Trial】After the trial, continue subscription for $6.49/month with a 1-year plan ($77.88 total) or $8.99 month-to-month. SIM & data included.
  • 【Plug & Play OBD2 GPS Tracker】Installs in seconds by plugging into your car’s OBDII port. Compact and lightweight (1.53" x 1.77" x 0.87", 1.2 oz), it’s a discreet hidden GPS tracker that won’t interfere with legroom or drain your car battery.
  • 【Track Speed and Driver Behavior】Receive instant alerts for speeding, geo-fence breach, vehicle crashes, hard braking or rapid acceleration. Speeding threshold is customizable. Ideal teen driver GPS or elderly vehicle tracker.
  • 【10-Second Real time, No Extra Charge】The fast refresh provides fleet manager or parents with accurate and real time location. Color-coded routes show speed changes visually.
  • 【12-month Data History】All tracking data is securely stored with full confidentiality, allowing you to review up to 1 year of trip history.

Best for: Large fleets, organizations with internal IT teams, mixed vehicle types, OEM-connected vehicles, and businesses that need detailed data governance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Financial drawback: Pricing is generally quote- or reseller-based. Compare the cost of hardware, software modules, integrations, support, installation, and data retention instead of comparing only the base subscription.

Review Geotab’s privacy controls.

3. Motive: best for safety and ELD-heavy trucking operations

Motive is particularly attractive to regulated trucking fleets. Its GPS tools include real-time and historical location data, geofences, trip playback, traffic and weather overlays, driver and asset pairing, proof-of-delivery workflows, idling and speeding alerts, and mobile fleet monitoring.

The Motive Vehicle Gateway functions as an FMCSA-registered ELD for regulated U.S. and Canadian fleets. It works with the Motive Driver App and Fleet Dashboard to provide GPS, vehicle-health, and compliance information.

One operational detail deserves attention: Motive considers a vehicle to be “In Motion” when it detects movement above 5 mph. If the driver is not properly connected to the Driver App, the trip may be recorded under an unidentified-driver profile. Managers then have to review, assign, or accept that driving time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: Trucking companies where HOS compliance, driver identification, safety events, coaching, dashcams, and IFTA workflows are central.

Financial drawback: Pricing depends on the selected platform components, hardware, vehicle types, and contract. Test the driver-login process, vehicle pairing, offline recovery, and unidentified-trip workflow before signing.

4. Verizon Connect: best for complex field-service and asset fleets

Verizon Connect is well suited to businesses managing more than ordinary company cars and vans. Its platform supports near-real-time vehicle locations, driver-behavior monitoring, historical replays, fuel reports, maintenance alerts, dispatch and routing, ELD/DVIR/HOS workflows, dashcams, and powered or non-powered asset tracking.

That combination can be useful for construction companies, utilities, field-service businesses, and organizations tracking trailers, equipment, and vehicles in the same operation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The online Reveal offering requires at least five tracking units. Those units can be a combination of vehicle trackers, powered asset trackers, and non-powered asset trackers. That makes Verizon Connect less practical for a business with only one or two vehicles.

Best for: Larger field-service companies, construction fleets, utilities, and businesses with vehicles plus equipment or trailers.

Financial drawback: A five-unit minimum can create unnecessary expense for a very small operation. Also ask what “near real-time” means for the exact hardware, because reporting frequency can change with ignition status, cellular coverage, configuration, and device type.

Check Verizon Connect’s unit requirements.

5. Azuga: best transparent pricing for safety-focused GPS tracking

Azuga is one of the easier fleet platforms to price before speaking with sales. Its BasicFleet plan is listed at $25 per vehicle per month. It includes GPS tracking, alerts and notifications, driver scores, driver rewards, reports, TrackMe, scheduled maintenance, and geofencing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The SafeFleet plan is listed at $30 per vehicle per month. It adds features such as SpeedSafe, distracted-driving and panic alerts, vehicle diagnostics, fuel-card integration, API integration, messaging, and enhanced vehicle data.

OBD GPS Tracker for Vehicles, No Monthly Fee, No Subscription
  • [NO MONTHLY FEE — 4G SIM & DATA INCLUDED] Pay once and track without a recurring subscription or activation fee. The built-in 4G SIM and data are included, so you can view vehicle location and activity in the TrackEase app or web dashboard. Coverage depends on local cellular availability.
  • [PLUG-AND-PLAY OBD POWER — NO CHARGING] Plug the tracker into a compatible vehicle’s OBD-II port—no wiring, tools, or battery charging required. It draws power from the vehicle and enters sleep mode after the engine is turned off for simple, set-it-and-forget-it tracking.
  • [REAL-TIME LOCATION & 180-DAY TRIP HISTORY] See live vehicle location with updates every 5 seconds while moving, then review up to 180 days of routes, stops, mileage, and driving activity in the iOS, Android, or web app.
  • [CUSTOM SAFETY & SECURITY ALERTS] Receive push notifications for speeding, vehicle movement, geofence entry or exit, and device disconnection. Use configurable alerts to monitor teen drivers, family vehicles, company cars, or potential theft.
  • [MULTI-VEHICLE MANAGEMENT & GLOBAL COVERAGE] Manage multiple VITALGLOW trackers from one account and keep each vehicle’s map, alerts, and trip history organized in one dashboard. Supported 4G service is available in 170+ countries and regions, including the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

Best for: Small and midsize fleets that want published pricing, driver scoring, rewards, geofences, and basic maintenance tools.

Financial drawback: The published amount is not necessarily the complete price. Confirm the tracker model, location-update interval, hardware charge, installation, cameras, contract term, and any volume discounts.

See Azuga’s published plans.

6. Linxup: best for simple small-business deployment

Linxup lists GPS tracking at $25 per vehicle per month and offers no-contract options. Its platform includes real-time GPS tracking, driver alerts, theft recovery, geofencing, maintenance tracking, unsafe-driving monitoring, and proof of service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Linxup lists a standard plug-in tracker at approximately $69 on a month-to-month plan and free with a three-year contract. That difference illustrates why hardware offers need to be read alongside the agreement.

Standard GPS tracking is not the same as ELD service. Linxup lists ELD as a separate product at $30 per vehicle per month, with a $59 one-time hardware cost shown alongside a three-year contract.

Best for: HVAC, plumbing, landscaping, pest-control, delivery, construction, and other small field-service businesses.

Financial drawback: A company that needs legally compliant hours-of-service logging must budget for the ELD product, not just the $25 GPS subscription.

How to choose a GPS fleet tracking system

  1. Define the actual problem. If the goal is theft recovery or dispatch visibility, a basic GPS plan may be enough. If the business needs HOS records, driver coaching, cameras, or maintenance automation, compare full telematics platforms.
  2. Separate GPS from ELD. A tracker can show where a vehicle traveled without satisfying federal hours-of-service requirements. Verify the exact device and software package on the FMCSA registered-device list when an ELD is required.
  3. Ask for a written tracking interval. “Real-time” can mean different things. Ask how frequently the device reports while moving, stopped, underground, outside cellular coverage, and with the ignition off.
  4. Confirm network compatibility. New hardware should use 4G LTE or newer connectivity. Do not buy a 3G-dependent device simply because its monthly fee is lower.
  5. Match hardware to the fleet. Check compatibility with OBD, J1939/J1708, J-Bus, 9-pin, wired, battery-powered, reefer, temperature, door, trailer, and equipment-tracking hardware.
  6. Test driver identification. Use a pilot vehicle to test shared vehicles, driver changes, team drivers, offline operation, and unidentified-trip correction.
  7. Price the full contract. Request hardware, installation, activation, replacement, support, camera, ELD, integration, early-termination, and data-export charges in writing.
  8. Set privacy rules before rollout. Decide whether personal use is allowed, when tracking is active, which managers can view history, and how long location data is retained.

Common GPS fleet-tracking failure modes

  • A device stops reporting: Check for retired 3G connectivity, loss of vehicle power, cellular coverage, and installation problems before assuming the software account is broken.
  • GPS and ELD are confused: Location history alone does not create compliant HOS records. A dedicated registered ELD solution may be required.
  • Trips appear under the wrong driver: Poor app connectivity or incomplete vehicle pairing can create unidentified trips, particularly in ELD-focused systems.
  • Live data disappears in a dead zone: The device may store information locally and upload it later, but live monitoring will be delayed. Ask each vendor how much offline data it retains.
  • Geofences trigger falsely: GPS drift near a property boundary, in an urban canyon, or inside a garage can create false arrivals and departures. Use dwell-time rules and appropriately sized geofences.
  • Privacy settings hide location data: Geotab’s Restricted Data Mode can intentionally remove positions, trips, speed profiles, and GPS-based exceptions. Check configuration before replacing hardware.
  • “Free” hardware creates a long commitment: Linxup’s free tracker offer is tied to a three-year contract, while its month-to-month option carries a hardware charge. Always compare the total contract cost.

What a fleet owner should ask before signing

  1. What is the total first-year cost for my exact number and type of vehicles?
  2. Is the price per vehicle, per device, per driver, or per feature?
  3. What happens if a tracker fails, is stolen, or needs to be moved to another vehicle?
  4. What is the normal reporting interval, and what happens during cellular outages?
  5. Is ELD service included, and is the exact device FMCSA-registered?
  6. Can I export historical location, maintenance, and driver data if I cancel?
  7. What are the minimum term, renewal, hardware-return, and early-termination requirements?
  8. Are cameras, installation, API access, fuel-card connections, and integrations included in my selected tier?

FAQ

What is the best GPS fleet tracking system in 2026?

Samsara is the best all-in-one choice for most fleets because it combines GPS tracking with routing, maintenance, safety, ELD compliance, cameras, and asset tracking. Azuga or Linxup may be better for smaller fleets prioritizing published pricing.

How much does GPS fleet tracking cost per vehicle?

Published prices in the compared products start at $25 per vehicle per month for Azuga BasicFleet and Linxup GPS tracking. Azuga SafeFleet is listed at $30 per vehicle per month, while Samsara, Motive, Geotab, and Verizon Connect generally require a quote. Hardware, installation, cameras, ELDs, and contract terms can increase the total.

Does a GPS tracker satisfy ELD requirements?

No. A GPS tracker can record location without recording legally compliant hours-of-service data. Fleets subject to ELD rules should verify that the exact hardware and software package is FMCSA-registered.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a no-contract GPS fleet tracker worth it?

A no-contract option can be worthwhile for a new or seasonal business because it reduces cancellation risk and makes testing easier. Compare its hardware and monthly costs with a multi-year offer; free or discounted hardware may require a three-year commitment.

The Bottom Line

Choose Samsara if you want the broadest all-in-one fleet platform and are willing to request a quote. Choose Geotab for customization and integrations, Motive for trucking safety and ELD workflows, and Verizon Connect for larger mixed-asset operations. For a small business that wants a visible starting price, Azuga and Linxup are the practical first quotes.

Before signing, compare the complete first-year cost—not just the monthly GPS fee—and confirm 4G compatibility, ELD status, reporting intervals, offline behavior, privacy controls, and cancellation terms.
