Google Wallet can hold your payment cards, boarding passes, event tickets, loyalty cards, gift cards and some digital IDs in one Android app. For store purchases, it uses contactless payment technology: you unlock your phone and hold it near a compatible card reader.
The setup is not identical on every Android phone. Manufacturer menus, Android versions, countries and card issuers can change what you see. The instructions below use Google’s current menu names, with alternatives where phone settings commonly differ.
Before you start
For Google Wallet on Android, you generally need:
- A Google Account
- Android 9 or later
- The current Google Wallet app and Google Play services
- A personal Android profile; work profiles are not supported
- An unrooted phone running certified, unmodified software
- NFC hardware for contactless payments
- A supported card and country
- A screen lock, such as a PIN, pattern, password or supported biometric method
Rooted phones, custom ROMs, unlocked bootloaders, developer versions of Android and uncertified software can prevent tap to pay from working. Features such as digital IDs, transit passes and payment cards also vary by country.
1. Install Google Wallet
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Search for Google Wallet.
- Tap Install, or Update if it is already installed.
- Open Google Wallet and follow the setup prompts.
Sign in with the Google Account you intend to use on the phone. Cards and passes previously added through Google Pay may appear automatically when you use the same account.

2. Add a debit or credit card
- Open Google Wallet.
- At the bottom, tap Add to Wallet.
- Tap Payment card.
- Choose New credit or debit card.
- Scan the card with your camera, or tap Enter details manually.
- Tap Save and continue.
- Read the card issuer’s terms and tap Accept.
- Complete any verification requested by your bank or card issuer.
Some phones and countries offer Add with a tap, which reads the card when you hold it against the back of the phone.
Add a card through your bank
You may also be able to add the card from your bank’s app or website:
- Sign in to the bank’s app or website.
- Open the card-management section.
- Tap Add to GPay.
- Follow the instructions.
If Add to GPay is not available, the bank or that specific card may not support the feature. The bank—not Google—decides which cards can be used for contactless payments.
3. Check whether the card is ready for tap to pay
Open the card in Google Wallet and look for the status message above it.
| Message | What to do |
|---|---|
| No warning | The card is generally ready for contactless payments. |
| Card not set up | Tap Finish setup and follow the prompts. |
| Turn on NFC to pay with Wallet | Enable NFC in Android Settings. |
| Card suspended | Contact the bank or card issuer. |
A card can sometimes be saved for online or in-app purchases even though it is not eligible for contactless payments.
4. Turn on NFC
NFC is the short-range wireless technology that lets the phone communicate with a contactless payment terminal.
- Open Settings.
- Use the Settings search bar and search for NFC.
- Turn NFC on.
On some phones, the longer route is Settings → Connected devices → Connection preferences → NFC. Your manufacturer may use different labels.

Google Wallet requires device verification before a payment card can be used. On many current Android phones:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Security & privacy.
- Tap Device unlock.
- Tap Screen lock.
- Choose a supported PIN, pattern, password or biometric method.
Some phones use Settings → Security → Device unlock → Screen lock. Smart Unlock and other lower-security unlock methods may not qualify for payment verification.
7. Finish the tap-to-pay setup
- Open Google Wallet.
- Tap your profile picture or account icon in the top-right.
- Tap Tap to pay setup.
- Complete any remaining steps.
Depending on the app version, this may be labelled Payment setup.
8. Choose your default card
The first payment card you add generally becomes the default contactless card. To change it:

- Unlock your phone.
- Hold the back of the phone near the contactless reader.
- Verify with your Android screen lock if prompted.
- Wait for the blue check mark.
Google Wallet normally uses the default card when the unlocked phone is held near the reader. Depending on your phone, Wallet may also be available from Quick Settings or the lock screen. On Pixel 8 and newer, a double press of the power button can open Wallet after that shortcut has been configured.
If the reader does not detect your phone
- Hold the phone closer to the reader for several seconds.
- Try a different position. The NFC antenna may be near the top, middle or bottom of the phone.
- Confirm that the terminal displays the contactless symbol.
- Ask whether the merchant accepts mobile payments.
- At a self-service terminal, press X to cancel a transaction that is stuck waiting for a physical card, then start again.
10. Add tickets, passes and IDs
From an issuer’s app, website or email

- Tap Add to Google Wallet.
- Tap Add to Wallet if that option appears.
- Verify your identity if requested.
- If you have more than one Wallet, select the destination wallet.
- Accept the terms.
This can work for event tickets, flight tickets, transit passes, campus IDs, health passes and some insurance cards. The issuer must support Google Wallet.

From a barcode or QR-code photo
For a library card, gym pass or parking pass, take a clear, high-resolution photo of the barcode or QR code. Then open Wallet, tap Add to Google Wallet → Photo, select the image, add a name and description, and tap Add.
Some app versions use Add to Wallet → Everything Else for image-based passes. These passes may have limited functionality and may not receive updates from the issuer.
11. Add loyalty cards and gift cards
Loyalty card
- Open Google Wallet.
- Tap Add to Wallet.
- Tap Loyalty card.
- Search for and select the merchant or loyalty program.
- Scan the card, sign in or follow the issuer’s instructions.
Gift card
- Tap Add to Wallet → Gift card.
- Search for and select the merchant.
- Scan the card or enter its information manually.
Google Play gift cards are not supported in Wallet’s gift-card feature. A Visa- or Mastercard-branded gift card should be added as a payment method instead.
To show a stored loyalty or gift card, open Wallet, tap View more → View more passes, and select the card. Show its barcode to the cashier, or provide the membership number if there is no barcode.

Common Google Wallet problems
| Problem | Likely cause or fix |
|---|---|
| “Couldn’t finish card setup for tap to pay” | Usually an issuer or bank problem. Try again later, use another supported card, or call the number on the back of the card. |
| “Phone can’t be set up for tap and pay” | Check NFC, the default payment app, screen lock, Android version, device certification, country and card support. |
| The terminal asks for a PIN | Enter the Android screen-lock PIN, not necessarily the PIN for the physical card. |
| The phone shows a check mark but payment fails | The phone communicated with the reader, but that does not guarantee authorization. Try another reader, confirm mobile payments are accepted, contact the bank or use another card. |
To check device certification, open Play Store → profile icon → Settings → About → Play Protect certification.
Why cards or passes disappear after changing phones
Payment cards generally need to be added again on a new device. Cards can also be removed after changing or disabling the screen lock, not opening Wallet for 90 days or more, factory-resetting or remotely wiping the phone, clearing Google Wallet or Google Play services data, removing the Google Account, or using an incompatible Dual apps setup.
Loyalty cards, gift cards, event tickets and boarding passes linked to your Google Account may reappear, but payment cards, transit passes, IDs, student IDs, badges, keys and private passes may require separate transfer or re-addition.

Google Wallet and Google Pay: what is the difference?
Google Wallet is the app used to store and access many cards, passes and digital credentials. Google Pay is the payment service used for online, in-app and contactless payments. Android settings and some Google support pages may still refer to Google Pay even when the installed app is Google Wallet.
Two assumptions are worth avoiding:
- You generally do not have to open Wallet before every store payment. With NFC enabled, Wallet selected as the default payment app and the phone unlocked, you can usually hold the phone near the reader.
- Saving a card in Wallet does not guarantee that it supports tap to pay. The issuer determines whether a particular card is eligible for mobile contactless payments.
FAQ
Do I need to open Google Wallet before paying?
Usually, no. Turn on NFC, make Google Wallet the default payment app, unlock the phone and hold its back near the contactless reader. Opening Wallet is useful when you need to select a non-default card.
Why can I add my card to Google Wallet but not use it in stores?
A card may be available for online or in-app purchases but unsupported for contactless payments. The bank or card issuer decides which cards can be used for tap to pay. Also check NFC, your screen lock, device certification and the default payment-app setting.
What PIN should I enter when Google Wallet asks for one?
Use the phone’s Android screen-lock PIN unless the terminal separately asks for the card’s PIN. Google Wallet uses device verification to authorize many payments.
Will my Google Wallet cards transfer to a new phone?
Payment cards generally need to be added again for security. Some loyalty cards, gift cards, event tickets and boarding passes linked to your Google Account may return automatically, while transit passes, IDs, keys and private passes may require separate transfer or re-addition.
The Bottom Line
For contactless payments, the essential setup is: add a supported card, enable NFC, select Google Wallet as the default payment app, create a secure screen lock and complete Tap to pay setup. You can then pay by unlocking the phone and holding it near the reader—without normally opening the app. Keep your bank’s app or statements as the definitive source for transaction history, and expect to re-add payment cards when you move to a new phone.
