Meter announced a $170 million Series C on June 12, 2025, led by Hemant Taneja at General Catalyst. The company said it would use the funding to grow its team and expand its products, operations, and enterprise networking-as-a-service (NaaS) platform. The round is a historical announcement, not a new financing event. Its significance lies in Meter’s attempt to bundle network equipment, software, deployment, ISP management, and ongoing support into a single subscription.
What Meter’s $170 million Series C covers
Meter’s June 12, 2025 announcement named Baillie Gifford, Lachy Groom, J.P. Morgan, Microsoft, Sequoia Capital, WndrCo, Tishman Speyer, and 53 Stations as participants alongside lead investor General Catalyst. Cooley also confirmed the financing. The announcement described the proceeds as funding for team growth, product and operational expansion, and scaling the platform for offices, campuses, warehouses, and data centers.
The funding does not establish Meter’s valuation, revenue, customer count, or profitability. Those figures are not stated in the company’s financing announcement or the financing notice. Network World identified Meter as a San Francisco company founded in 2015 and led by CEO Anil Varanasi, but those details do not answer how the business is performing financially today.
What Meter means by networking as a service
NaaS is not a standardized product category. Some providers use the term for cloud-managed Wi-Fi, SD-WAN, network monitoring, subscription hardware, or a managed-service contract. Meter’s version is broader: it presents networking as a recurring service that can combine hardware, software, design, installation, security, ISP procurement and management, support, and equipment refreshes. Its NaaS explainer describes pricing by physical space or unit area; its current pricing page lists subscription tiers but no public dollar rates.

That makes Meter more than a conventional equipment sale with support attached, but the exact boundaries still matter. A buyer needs to establish whether internet circuits themselves are included or whether Meter coordinates providers and contracts, what work is covered at each site, and which responsibilities remain with the customer.
How the stack fits together
Hardware and network software
Meter’s network portfolio spans routing, switching, wireless, firewalls and security, cellular connectivity, and power distribution. Its pricing page currently lists firewall models rated at 20 Gbps and 50 Gbps with built-in high availability; 12-, 24-, and 48-port multi-gigabit switches with PoE++; tri-band Wi-Fi 7 access points for 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz; and power distribution units with six 120-volt outlets. These are specifications presented by Meter, not independently tested performance results.
Meter describes its Network Operating System (NOS) as purpose-built to run across its hardware. “Built from the ground up” should not be read to mean that Meter fabricates every component or wrote every software layer: Network World reported that the stack includes a Linux kernel component and merchant silicon from suppliers including Marvell and Intel. The distinction is between designing and integrating a network platform and manufacturing every underlying part.
Unified management and digital representation
Meter says its management plane brings network categories that are often split among vendors—switching, routing, wireless, security, cellular, and power-related infrastructure—under a shared system. Network World also reported that Meter developed secure protocols for propagating information and changes among devices, such as a VLAN-related change affecting multiple parts of the infrastructure. That is a description of the reported architecture, not independent validation of its behavior at customer scale.

In March 2024, Meter introduced a switch platform with a real-time digital representation of physical switches. The company says this digital-twin approach is intended to improve visibility, configuration, troubleshooting, and remote management across locations. Its practical value depends on the accuracy and usefulness of the representation in a customer’s actual operating environment.
What customers buy—and what is not publicly priced
Meter presents two tiers on its current pricing page. Neither has a public dollar price; prospects are directed to contact sales or request a demo. The page describes a recurring subscription rather than a self-serve, per-seat software price.
| Tier | Listed scope | Installation |
|---|---|---|
| Professional | Meter hardware and software, security, support and maintenance, network design, and network and ISP management | Not included; Meter ships hardware for the customer’s preferred partner or installer to install |
| Premium | Professional capabilities plus rollout, project management and coordination, equipment planning and logistics, and network validation | Includes on-site installation and cabling work |
Meter says its service includes hardware refreshes, ISP procurement and contract management, consolidated billing, failover, monitoring, and support. The precise coverage, schedule, and remedies for a particular customer depend on the contract. Network World reported that Meter’s model can use per-location or per-square-footage pricing and may include buying back a customer’s existing equipment; buyers should confirm eligibility and terms directly rather than assume a buyback applies to every deployment.
The company says it supports networks in the United States, Canada, and Europe. That stated footprint should not be treated as worldwide availability or proof that every feature is offered in every supported country.

Where automation fits
Meter Command was announced as generally available to Meter customers and partners on May 21, 2025. Meter describes it as a generative interface that can query live network data and prepare or execute configuration actions. Its product description says the system uses planning, execution, and synthesis stages and requests confirmation before actionable changes. Those are vendor claims; the available information does not independently establish accuracy, safety, or performance.
For an enterprise, the important questions are operational: which users can invoke actions, what requires approval, how changes are logged and rolled back, and how sensitive telemetry is handled. A natural-language interface can reduce friction, but it does not replace access controls, change management, or audit requirements.
When the subscription model may make sense
Meter’s model may appeal to organizations opening or relocating many sites, operating warehouses or campuses, or running lean IT teams. One provider for equipment, deployment coordination, support, and network or ISP management can reduce the work of aligning multiple vendors. A recurring fee may also make budgeting more predictable than a cycle of hardware purchases and separate support renewals.
Those benefits are conditional. A subscription shifts spending from upfront purchases to recurring payments; it does not make networking free or guarantee a lower lifetime cost. A buyer should compare the total contract cost with hardware depreciation, circuits, installation and cabling, support, internal labor, replacement cycles, financing, and eventual migration. For a small office with capable network staff and equipment already in place, a comprehensive service may add cost or operational constraints without enough offsetting value.

Before committing, request written answers on contract duration and termination, hardware ownership, refresh timing, service-level targets and credits, support hours and escalation, installation exclusions, and what happens to configurations and telemetry when service ends. Confirm API access and configuration export, rights to retain or reuse network designs, compatibility with existing identity, security, SIEM, NAC, and observability tools, and whether the customer can keep existing equipment. Technical ability to configure a network is different from the contractual ability to move it elsewhere.

Meter is competing for budgets that could go to incumbent networking platforms, cloud-managed networking, managed-service providers, telecom or SD-WAN providers, or a do-it-yourself hardware deployment. These are different operating models, not direct equivalents. Incumbent platforms may offer broader ecosystems and hardware choice; a managed-service provider may supply local operations while using third-party equipment; DIY can give an experienced team more control while leaving it responsible for design, deployment, support, and refreshes. Network World named Nile, Join Digital, and Ramen Networks as NaaS startup competitors, but the available information does not support a current feature or price ranking among them.
- Integration versus choice: A vendor-designed stack may simplify coordination and troubleshooting, while concentrating hardware, software, and service dependency in one provider.
- Predictability versus commitment: A recurring fee can smooth budgets, but contract length, escalation clauses, and exit costs determine whether the economics work.
- Managed deployment versus customer work: Premium includes installation and rollout as described by Meter; Professional leaves installation to the customer’s chosen installer.
- Automation versus governance: Command’s described confirmation safeguards do not answer every question about permissions, auditability, recovery, or data handling.
Buyers should also ask how local network changes work during a cloud-control-plane outage, what response and restoration targets apply to ISP failures, how quickly replacement equipment is supplied, and whether regulatory requirements for logging, data residency, incident response, or security certification are met. Meter lists security features including zero-trust architecture, inter-VLAN controls, SSO, role-based access control, encrypted links, WPA2/WPA3, 802.1X, DNS security, and rogue access-point detection on its security page. Feature descriptions do not by themselves establish compliance with a particular organization’s obligations.
What the financing signals—and what it does not
The round gives Meter capital to expand the platform and operations behind a service that requires hardware development as well as software and field deployment. It is a bet on an enterprise buyer accepting a more integrated, recurring network service in place of coordinating equipment purchases and operations across suppliers. Whether that model scales profitably, wins against incumbent ecosystems, or produces lower total costs for customers cannot be concluded from the financing announcement alone.
