Kindle purchases use the Amazon account linked to your device. To change the payment method for future purchases, open Your Payments in that Amazon account, add or edit a payment method, and set it as the default if you want Amazon to use it normally. Changing the wallet does not automatically update an order that has already been placed.
Change the payment method for future Kindle purchases
Use the Amazon account registered to your Kindle and the marketplace where you buy books. Amazon’s menu wording can vary by country, account, and app version, but Your Payments is the destination to look for.
On Amazon’s website
- Sign in to the Amazon account connected to your Kindle.
- Open Account & Lists, then select Your Account and Your Payments.
- Select Add a payment method to add a new card or eligible method. To update a saved card, select it and choose Edit.
- If you want the method used for future purchases by default, choose Set as the default payment method if that option appears, then save.
Amazon’s guidance describes adding or editing payment methods in Your Payments and managing the wallet through Amazon account settings.
In the Amazon Shopping app
- Open the Amazon Shopping app and go to Account or the account/person icon.
- Open Your Payments.
- Add a payment method or select a saved card to edit it. Choose the default-payment option if it appears, then save.
App labels and navigation can change; Amazon’s wallet guide explains the same account-level task.

Default card or one-time checkout choice?
Set a default when you want a method used for most future eligible transactions. If you want a different card for only one book, select it at checkout when Amazon offers a payment selector. Amazon says 1-Click orders are charged to the account’s default payment method, but the method available can depend on the transaction and account circumstances; see the Amazon Payments Customer Agreement.
Add a replacement card or update an expired one
For an expiration-date or billing-address change, edit the existing card in Your Payments. If the card number has changed, Amazon’s instructions say to add the replacement as a new payment method rather than simply editing the old number.

- Remove the obsolete card only after checking that it is not needed for an open order, subscription, or backup-payment setting.
Amazon’s payment-method guidance covers editing and replacing methods. A default change can affect other future eligible Amazon transactions using that default, not just Kindle books.
Change the payment method for a Kindle order already placed
At checkout, before the order is placed
If checkout shows a payment selector, choose the desired method there. Do not assume that changing the account default overrides a different method displayed for that transaction.

For a pending order or failed payment
Open Your Orders or the digital order details and look for Change payment method, Retry payment, or similar wording. If Amazon offers an update control, submit another eligible method. Availability varies by order; Amazon’s failed-payment guidance also recommends contacting support when needed.
After the purchase is complete
Changing the default payment method does not transfer a completed Kindle charge to another card. Cancellation or refund eligibility is a separate matter governed by Amazon’s digital-content rules; contact Amazon if you need to ask whether the purchase can be reversed before buying it again.

If the Kindle payment is declined
- Check the card number, expiration date, security details, and billing address in Your Payments.
- If the card was replaced and has a new number, add it as a new method.
- Ask the card issuer whether it blocked the authorization, online purchase, or available credit. Amazon notes that the bank generally must resolve an underlying authorization decline.
- Check the order details for a payment-update or retry option, and contact Amazon support if the order remains suspended or no option appears.
- Confirm that the payment method was added to the Amazon account and marketplace that made the purchase.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does the payment method change on the Kindle device?
Usually, no: manage the payment wallet in the Amazon account rather than in the Kindle’s reading settings. Device menus differ by model and software, so the reliable check is the account registered to the device. Verify that account’s email address in the Kindle’s registration or account settings, then make sure you are signed in to that same account and marketplace on Amazon. Changing the wallet on a different Amazon account will not update the account used for the purchase.

Payment methods, subscriptions, and author royalties
Eligible payment types vary
Cards, bank accounts, gift balances, and other options are not guaranteed to be available for every Kindle transaction. Eligibility can vary by country, marketplace, account, and transaction type; Amazon’s payment terms describe these limitations.
Kindle Unlimited and other recurring charges
A recurring service may have its own billing status and may require attention in the subscription or account billing area before its next charge. Updating the wallet alone may not resolve a failed recurring payment.
Authors changing KDP royalty payments
If by “Kindle payment” you mean money you receive as a publisher, rather than payment for books you buy, use the separate KDP workflow: KDP account → Your Account → Your Royalty Payments. KDP explains how to change those details in its royalty-payment instructions.
