Uber and May Mobility announced a real, multi-year robotaxi partnership on May 1, 2025, but the planned Arlington, Texas, service has not launched for Uber riders. As of August 18, 2026, Uber says autonomous rides are not yet available in Arlington; May Mobility still described the deployment as upcoming in May 2026.
What Uber and May Mobility agreed to
The companies announced a multi-year strategic partnership to put May Mobility autonomous vehicles on Uber’s ride-hailing platform. Uber would provide the rider-facing app and match customers with eligible May Mobility vehicles; May Mobility would provide and operate the vehicles and autonomous-driving technology.
The initial plan named Arlington, Texas, with additional U.S. markets targeted for 2026. May Mobility said it aimed to put thousands of autonomous vehicles on Uber over the following years. That is a forward-looking goal, not a report of vehicles already deployed. The announcement did not disclose public financial terms, revenue sharing, fleet ownership, or per-mile costs. What vehicles and autonomy system were planned?
The announced vehicle was an American-made, hybrid-electric Toyota Sienna Autono-MaaS equipped with May Mobility’s Multi-Policy Decision Making (MPDM) system. May describes MPDM as an approach designed to reason through situations as they arise, rather than relying only on a fixed catalogue of scenarios.

In a May 20, 2026 update, May Mobility said its fifth-generation autonomy architecture combines deep learning, a predictive world model, and a reasoning engine. The company also reported more than 525,000 commercial rides and more than 1.1 million commercial autonomous miles across its operations. Those are May Mobility’s company-reported totals, not independently verified results for Uber’s planned Arlington service. May Mobility’s architecture update
Why Arlington was the first planned market
May Mobility already operates Arlington RAPID, a separate on-demand transit service involving the company, Via, the City of Arlington, and the University of Texas at Arlington. May’s current service page describes five vehicles, including one wheelchair-accessible vehicle, operating in an area of roughly one square mile around UTA and downtown Arlington. It lists a $3 public fare and free rides for qualifying UTA staff and students. May Mobility’s Arlington RAPID page
RAPID is not the Uber robotaxi rollout: it has its own service area and transit partners. May’s local operating experience likely informed the choice of Arlington; Uber’s announcement said that experience would help May deploy and expand beyond the existing service area. The rationale is an inference from the companies’ statements, not a separately announced selection criterion.

A final report for the 2021–2022 Arlington RAPID demonstration recorded 28,140 rides and reported no safety incidents or accidents during that demonstration. That finding applies to the specific demonstration and period; it does not establish the safety record of the proposed Uber service or all May Mobility operations. Arlington RAPID final report
The announced timeline versus the current status
| Date | What was reported |
|---|---|
| March 2021 | Arlington RAPID began operating, according to May Mobility’s service page. |
| May 1, 2025 | Uber and May Mobility announced the partnership and planned an initial Arlington launch by the end of 2025, with more U.S. markets planned for 2026. |
| May 20, 2026 | May Mobility described the Uber Arlington deployment as upcoming. |
| August 18, 2026 | Uber’s Arlington page said autonomous rides were not yet available there. |
The original end-of-2025 target did not become a confirmed public Uber launch in the sources available by August 18, 2026. Uber’s Arlington page says the service is not yet available and cautions that a launch may not currently be planned. Uber’s active-market update names certain areas of Austin, Dallas, Atlanta, and Las Vegas instead. Uber’s Arlington autonomous-rides page · Uber’s active-market update
That establishes the public availability status, not the reason for the delay. The companies have not, in the cited updates, explained why the original target was missed or confirmed a new launch date. Riders may be able to join an interest list through the Uber app if the option appears, but that is not a booking or a promise of a match.

What “robotaxi” means in this deal
“Robotaxi” is a reasonable shorthand for an autonomous vehicle carrying ride-hail passengers, but it can imply a fully driverless service from day one. That is not what the original plan promised. The initial Arlington deployment was to include onboard safety operators, with a later transition to driverless operation. The announcement did not set a date for removing operators or establish that driverless operation has been approved for this service.
- Autonomous ride-hail: A May Mobility vehicle would carry a rider matched through Uber.
- Safety-operator phase: The initial plan included an onboard human operator.
- Driverless phase: A later transition was planned, subject to operational readiness and applicable approvals; no transition date was announced.
- Operating domain: Service would be limited to approved roads and areas rather than automatically covering all of Arlington or the wider Dallas–Fort Worth region.
How an Uber autonomous ride would work for a rider
Uber’s general AV model is based on matching, not guaranteed vehicle selection. In markets where autonomous vehicles operate, eligible ride requests may be matched with an AV depending on the market, vehicle supply, service area, and operating conditions. Uber says riders may receive a notification and can accept the AV match or switch to a conventional ride. Eligible ride categories differ by market; Uber identifies UberX, Uber Comfort, and Uber Comfort Electric as possible categories in some AV cities. Riders can use Ride Preferences to increase their chance of an AV match where the feature is offered. Uber’s autonomous mobility guide
Even after a service launches, an AV match would not guarantee that every requested trip can be completed by an autonomous vehicle. Geofencing, hours, weather, construction, emergency scenes, destination limits, local rules, or fleet availability can affect whether a vehicle is offered. Riders should check the options and upfront price shown in the app; an autonomous match does not itself guarantee a discount.

How the deal fits Uber’s wider AV strategy
May Mobility is one of several autonomous-vehicle partners on Uber’s platform strategy. The approach lets Uber provide a shared customer and matching layer while different partners bring their own vehicles, autonomy systems, and operating arrangements. It does not mean those partners use interchangeable technology or have identical rollout plans.
| Partner | Example on Uber | What differs |
|---|---|---|
| May Mobility | Planned Arlington service using hybrid-electric Toyota Sienna Autono-MaaS vehicles; public Uber rides in Arlington remain unavailable as of August 18, 2026. | Initial safety operators were planned before a later driverless transition. |
| Waymo | Uber offers Waymo autonomous rides in selected markets including Austin and Atlanta. | Waymo supplies its own vehicle and autonomy system; in the cited Atlanta launch, riders could accept or decline an autonomous match. Uber’s Waymo Atlanta announcement |
| Motional | Uber and Motional launched a Las Vegas service in March 2026 using electric Hyundai IONIQ 5 vehicles. | The launch initially included a vehicle operator, with fully driverless operations expected later. Uber and Motional’s launch announcement |
| WeRide | Uber and WeRide announced an expansion involving 15 additional cities globally over five years. | The announcement said Uber would be responsible for fleet operations in those deployments. Uber and WeRide’s expansion announcement |
The comparison shows why “Uber robotaxi” is not one uniform product: availability, human oversight, vehicle type, geography, and operating responsibility depend on the partner and city.
Quick Recap
What riders and investors should watch for
- For Arlington riders: Check Uber’s Arlington page or the app for a live availability change. An interest-list option is only an alert path, not access to a ride today. For trips within its limited area, Arlington RAPID is a distinct service with its own stops and eligibility.
- For investors: The partnership signals an attempt to combine Uber’s marketplace with third-party AV fleets, but the announcement does not quantify the deal’s economics, vehicle count at launch, or contribution to Uber’s revenue.
- For drivers and policymakers: Uber describes AVs as complementing human-driven rides, but the eventual effect on driver demand and labor remains unresolved. Any launch and driverless transition also depend on operating readiness and applicable rules.
What remains unknown
- A confirmed Uber launch date for Arlington and whether the original end-of-2025 target has been formally replaced.
- The number of May Mobility vehicles that would serve Uber at launch, the precise operating area, and operating hours.
- When or whether the planned service would move from onboard safety operators to driverless operation.
- The fare structure for May Mobility rides booked through Uber.
- Financial terms, including fleet ownership, revenue sharing, capital commitments, and per-mile costs.
