HelloSign vs. DocuSign Free in 2026: Which E-Signature Plan Is Actually Usable?

Dropbox Sign, formerly HelloSign, is the more useful free option for occasional senders. Its free plan includes three signature requests every 30 days, plus unlimited self-signing. DocuSign’s current U.S. public pricing lists paid sender plans, not a comparable permanent free tier; its Personal plan costs $11 per month with an annual commitment and includes five envelopes per month. DocuSign also offers a free trial, but a trial is not a permanent free plan.

The key difference is the unit each service counts: a Dropbox Sign request or DocuSign envelope can contain multiple documents and signers. So the limits are not simply three pages versus five pages. Prices and plan details below reflect the U.S. public pricing pages checked August 16–18, 2026; confirm the offer and billing terms at checkout.

What “free” means for each service

  • Free sender plan: Dropbox Sign offers one, with a capped monthly sending allowance. DocuSign’s current U.S. public pricing page does not list a comparable permanent free sender plan.
  • Free trial: DocuSign promotes a time-limited trial of paid features. The terms shown during signup determine what happens when it ends; do not assume every offer automatically converts to a paid subscription. Dropbox Sign also offers a 30-day trial of paid features, separate from its Free plan.
  • Free recipient signing: A recipient can generally sign a request without paying for a sender subscription. That does not give the person sending it a free ongoing allowance.

Dropbox says HelloSign was renamed Dropbox Sign. “HelloSign Free” therefore means the current Dropbox Sign Free plan, not a separate product. See Dropbox’s rebrand FAQ.

How Dropbox Sign’s three-request limit works

The Free plan allows three outbound signature requests in each 30-day period, with the allowance renewing every 30 days from signup rather than necessarily on the first of the month. The limit is on requests, not documents or individual signatures. A single request may include one or more documents and one or more signers when they are part of the same transaction. Dropbox’s Free-plan help page explains the allowance and completed-request records.

Examples: what uses a request?

  • Sending three contracts separately uses three requests.
  • Sending a packet of several related documents together to one signing group can count as one request.
  • Sending the same contract separately to three customers uses three requests.
  • Adding several signers to one transaction does not automatically make it several requests.

Bundle documents only when they properly belong in one transaction. Separate agreements may need distinct consent, access, retention or audit treatment. Dropbox’s public help page establishes the limit but does not fully spell out every cancellation, failed-delivery, correction, resend or expiration edge case; check the current account interface or help documentation before relying on a request being returned to your allowance.

Unlimited self-signing is not unlimited sending

You can use Dropbox Sign Free to fill and sign your own documents without consuming the three outbound requests. That is useful for personal forms or internal paperwork where you are the only signer. It does not mean you can collect signatures from unlimited clients, tenants, employees or customers.

For completed outbound requests, Dropbox Sign includes the signed PDF and an audit trail. Self-signed documents do not include an audit trail because there is only one signer. Once the three-request allowance is used, wait for its renewal or upgrade; self-signing remains available under Free.

When Dropbox Sign Essentials is the logical upgrade

If the main obstacle is the Free plan’s three-request cap, Essentials is the relevant next step: Dropbox’s U.S. pricing page listed it at $15 per month with monthly billing or $10.05 per month equivalent when billed annually at $120.60. The page markets unlimited signature requests on paid plans. A template or team workflow is a separate feature question: verify the live plan comparison for the specific reusable-template, sharing and administration features you need rather than assuming they are all included in Free.

What DocuSign offers without a subscription—and what Personal costs

DocuSign’s free trial is a way to test paid features for a limited period, not a permanent free sending plan. Its current U.S. pricing page lists Personal at $11 per month under an annual commitment billed monthly, or $132 for the year. Personal includes five envelopes per month and up to 99 signatures per envelope. The page also lists reusable templates, storage, integrations and a real-time audit trail among its features. Check the live plan comparison for the exact feature availability and terms.

An envelope is a transaction, not a page

A DocuSign envelope can contain multiple documents and signers. It counts when sent, whether or not it is completed, so an unsigned, canceled or otherwise incomplete sent transaction may still use one of the five monthly envelopes. DocuSign’s pricing page and FAQ describe envelope limits. That makes the allowance less forgiving if a signer does not finish or a transaction needs to be restarted.

Recipients can generally review and sign without a DocuSign account. This is separate from the sender’s subscription. Organizations may still impose their own account, identity-check or authentication requirements.

Which plan fits common situations?

Situation Practical choice Why
A landlord sends three lease packets in a 30-day cycle Dropbox Sign Free may be enough If each packet is one properly bundled request, the three-request allowance can cover them. Sending separately to different tenants still consumes separate requests.
A freelancer sends four client contracts in a cycle Dropbox Sign Free is short by at least one request; compare paid plans or another provider Four separate client transactions exceed the Free allowance. DocuSign Personal is an option only if its paid price and ecosystem make sense.
Someone needs to sign personal tax or insurance forms Dropbox Sign Free Unlimited self-signing does not consume outbound requests.
A small business sends a five-page agreement to several signers Either service could handle the document as one transaction; choose by workflow and volume Page count does not equal request or envelope count. Confirm that the signers belong in the same transaction.
A recruiter regularly sends offer letters A paid plan or provider with suitable team workflows Repeated sending can exceed three requests, and business continuity, template sharing and administration may matter more than a free cap.
A developer embeds signature collection in an app Neither free web plan is sufficient for production API sending Dropbox Sign’s free API access is for test mode; production legally binding requests require a paid API plan. Do not infer production API access for DocuSign from its consumer trial or web plan.

Recipients, templates, integrations and limits beyond the headline

Recipients usually do not need accounts

Dropbox Sign says recipients do not need a Dropbox Sign account and do not pay to sign; DocuSign likewise supports a recipient signing flow without an account. See Dropbox Sign’s pricing page and DocuSign’s plan details. This describes the ordinary platform flow, not every organization’s rules or every enhanced identity-verification setup.

  • Hand orientation: Ambidextrous

Templates are not the same as team workflows

A one-off document, a saved reusable template, a template shared across a team, a locked template, bulk sending and an API-driven template are distinct capabilities. DocuSign lists reusable templates on Personal, but the precise allowance and terms should be checked on its current plan page. Dropbox Sign’s pricing page promotes templates, but the Free-plan feature matrix does not establish every template or sharing entitlement. Confirm the exact live plan details before choosing based on templates.

API access is separate from a free web account

Dropbox Sign offers free API test mode, but its API overview says production legally binding requests require a paid API plan. Test-mode activity is not a production signing transaction. Embedded signing or requesting, branding, rate limits and other API requirements may differ by plan. DocuSign’s consumer pricing and trial information does not establish API or embedded production access.

Audit trails, legal validity and security

An audit trail can document transaction events and support a record of who signed and when; it does not, by itself, guarantee that an agreement will be enforceable in every dispute. Dropbox Sign markets its signatures as legally binding and references the U.S. ESIGN Act, while DocuSign also markets electronic-signature plans for signing transactions. Those are vendor claims, not a universal legal outcome. Applicable law, transaction type, consent, identity evidence, record retention and the underlying agreement all matter.

Some documents or industries may require notarization, wet signatures, qualified electronic signatures, stronger identity verification or specialized compliance controls. DocuSign’s basic Personal tier does not include certain higher-assurance or enterprise features such as data residency, HIPAA support through a BAA and 21 CFR Part 11. Businesses with regulated or procurement-sensitive workflows should review the plan-specific controls and obtain appropriate legal or compliance advice rather than treating a free or entry plan as sufficient.

When to choose another route

  • Need more than three Dropbox Sign requests or five DocuSign envelopes regularly: Compare paid plans against other providers; do not build a business-critical process around a limit that routinely blocks work.
  • Need bulk sending, shared team templates, payment collection, web forms or production API sending: Confirm those precise features and quotas on a paid plan before committing.
  • Need a broader document workflow: PandaDoc may be relevant for proposals and sales documents; Jotform Sign may suit workflows centered on forms and data collection. Current prices and free allowances are not established here, so verify them directly before switching.
  • Already use a productivity or document suite: Check whether it includes an e-signature feature that meets the workflow; convenience may outweigh a separate free plan.
  • Need compliance-heavy or high-assurance signing: Request a plan-specific security and compliance review from the provider.

Other services worth comparing for a specific need include Adobe Acrobat Sign for organizations standardized on Adobe, SignWell for low-volume signing, and SignNow for team workflows. Their current pricing, limits and feature entitlements are not established here; check the vendors’ current terms.

Which free e-signature plan is actually usable?

For a person or small business that sends no more than three signature transactions every 30 days, Dropbox Sign Free is the clear practical choice: it is a permanent sender plan, and bundling related documents can make the allowance go further. It is also useful for unlimited self-signing. DocuSign is the better fit only when its ecosystem, recipient familiarity or paid features justify paying for Personal or another plan. If sending is frequent, business-critical, automated or subject to stricter compliance needs, compare paid plans and verify the specific workflow before relying on either entry-level option.
