Bill Gates Left Microsoft’s Board in 2020. How Involved Is He Still?

Gates left Microsoft’s board in 2020 but reportedly continued to offer high-level advice. That is not the same as running the company or holding formal authority.

Bill Gates left Microsoft’s board on March 13, 2020, but Microsoft said he would continue as a technology adviser to CEO Satya Nadella and other executives. Later reporting describes product reviews, strategic discussions and other high-level contact. That supports saying Gates remained influential in an informal advisory capacity—not that he kept a board seat, managed Microsoft or controlled its decisions.

What Gates left—and when

Gates’s 2020 board departure was not his first step away from Microsoft. He stopped being CEO in 2000, began transitioning out of full-time work in 2006, and left Microsoft’s day-to-day role on June 27, 2008. He later served as chairman while Nadella became CEO in 2014. On March 13, 2020, Gates left the board, ending his formal governance role there. Microsoft’s announcement records the 2008 transition and 2020 board change; Wired’s account describes the earlier CEO transition.

Date Change What it means
2000 Gates left the CEO role. He did not leave Microsoft altogether.
June 27, 2008 He transitioned out of day-to-day work. He was no longer running ordinary operations.
2014 Nadella became CEO; Gates remained chairman until that year. His later relationship with the company was advisory, not operational leadership.
March 13, 2020 Gates left Microsoft’s board. He no longer held a board seat or board vote.

Why he left the board

Microsoft said Gates wanted to devote more time to philanthropy, including global health, development, education and climate-change work. He announced his departure from Berkshire Hathaway’s board at the same time. Microsoft’s statement gives that explanation.

There was also a separate, disputed matter in contemporary coverage: reports said Microsoft directors had examined a past relationship between Gates and a Microsoft employee, and some directors believed he should leave the board. A Gates spokesperson said the departure was unrelated. The public accounts do not establish that the investigation caused his decision. The Washington Post and Wired covered the issue at the time.

What “still involved” reportedly means

Microsoft’s 2020 announcement said Gates would remain a technology adviser to Nadella and other executives. That title describes an advisory relationship, not a directorship or executive office. Later reporting suggests the contact could include reviewing products, meeting teams, discussing technology and strategy, and taking part in executive or recruiting conversations. Those accounts describe selected high-level input; they do not show that Gates had a formal approval role over products or company decisions.

The Information reported that Gates’s Microsoft-related work averaged about nine hours a month, citing a person close to him. That is an attributed estimate, not a Microsoft-reported measure. In a February 2023 interview, Gates said he spent about 10% of his time at Microsoft’s Redmond headquarters meeting product teams. That was his own description of his activity at that time, not a current estimate. Forbes published the interview.

The Information also reported that people at Microsoft continued to use the internal name “BillG” for Gates and that he retained a Microsoft email address. Such signs of access are consistent with ongoing contact, but they do not establish employment, governance authority or operational responsibility.

His relationship with Nadella and OpenAI

Gates’s representative told The Information that his role as founder and technical adviser remained essentially the same after Nadella became CEO, with his involvement at Nadella’s direction. This depicts a founder offering advice when asked—not a superior directing the CEO.

Reports also describe Gates as one participant in discussions that helped foster Microsoft’s relationship with OpenAI. They do not establish him as the sole architect or decision-maker behind the partnership. Microsoft CTO Kevin Scott also played a central role in brokering the relationship, according to reporting summarized by Windows Central and Yahoo’s syndicated report. “Helped foster” is better supported than claims that Gates personally created or controlled Microsoft’s AI strategy.

What the evidence says about his authority

Type of involvement What is supported
Formal governance Gates left the board on March 13, 2020. Microsoft’s 2025 annual-report materials do not list him among directors or executive officers.
Day-to-day management He had transitioned out of Microsoft’s day-to-day role in 2008.
Advisory access Microsoft announced a technology-adviser role; later reporting describes continued contact and input.
Operational or corporate control The public evidence does not establish that Gates managed Microsoft, directed its employees, or had binding decision-making power after leaving the board.

Some coverage characterized Gates as “pulling the strings” or described him as deeply involved. Those phrases go beyond what the documented roles prove. Entrepreneur reported both continuing product-review activity and a Microsoft spokesperson’s statement that Gates was not formally at the company or involved in its operations. The apparent conflict is less stark when occasional advisory conversations are separated from employment or operational responsibility. Entrepreneur’s report covers those competing descriptions.

What can be verified about his status now

Microsoft’s 2025 annual-report materials and its 2025 annual shareholder meeting materials do not list Gates as a director or executive. The public sources cited here do not verify the precise frequency or substance of any private advisory contact in 2026. The latest detailed reporting describes activity in earlier years, while corporate disclosures establish that he was not part of Microsoft’s listed formal leadership.
