Toyota is not launching a Toyota-branded rocket. Toyota Group company Woven by Toyota committed about ¥7 billion—$44.3 million using the exchange rate in the January 7, 2025 announcement—to Japanese launch startup Interstellar Technologies. The investment is part of a broader bet on turning Interstellar’s planned ZERO rocket into a repeatably manufactured vehicle, not a declaration that Toyota is entering the launch business on its own.
What did Woven by Toyota invest in?
Woven by Toyota was the lead investor in the first close of Interstellar Technologies’ Series F financing. The company described the investment as approximately ¥7 billion, equivalent to $44.3 million at the announcement’s stated rate of ¥158 to the U.S. dollar. That dollar figure is a dated conversion, not a fixed value of the yen investment. The agreement combined financing with a business alliance, and a second Series F close was expected. Interstellar’s announcement also said Woven by Toyota would provide a director; on January 28, 2025, Woven by Toyota CEO Hajime Kumabe joined Interstellar’s board. Interstellar’s board announcement
Woven by Toyota is a Toyota Group company, but it is the named investor in the original deal—not Toyota Motor Corporation directly. The headline compresses that corporate distinction. The central purpose was to bring Toyota-side manufacturing expertise to Interstellar’s rocket production.
Who is Interstellar Technologies, and what is ZERO?
Interstellar Technologies is a Japanese space-transportation startup headquartered in Hokkaido. Its earlier MOMO vehicle is a sounding rocket: the company says it became the first Japanese private company to reach space with a rocket launched independently of a government space agency. That was a suborbital achievement, not a satellite launch into orbit.

MOMO and ZERO are different milestones
- Suborbital flight: A rocket can reach space without traveling fast enough to circle Earth and remain in orbit. MOMO’s achievement falls in this category.
- Orbital launch: A vehicle must deliver a payload to the speed and trajectory needed to stay in orbit, a substantially different technical and commercial challenge.
- ZERO: Interstellar is developing this orbital launcher for small satellites. It is not an operational launch service with a proven orbital record. Interstellar’s ZERO and alliance announcement
Interstellar frames ZERO as a way to expand Japan’s domestic launch capacity and serve small-satellite demand. The Toyota partnership focuses on making production more repeatable and cost-conscious; it does not establish that ZERO has completed a successful orbital flight.
What is Toyota expected to contribute?
The manufacturing challenge is the heart of the alliance. Rockets are often produced in small numbers through specialized supply chains. Toyota’s industrial know-how could help Interstellar standardize processes, coordinate suppliers, improve quality control, reduce cost, and move from prototype builds toward repeatable production. The companies have specifically pointed to engine and propellant-tank manufacturing as well as the broader production system. Toyota’s Woven City and co-creation announcement

This hobby 1/12 RC Truck is a decent gift for adults over 16 years old.
In August 2025, Toyota Motor Corporation, Woven by Toyota, and Interstellar formalized a three-party manufacturing alliance. Toyota said personnel would be dispatched to support work on ZERO’s first flight unit and its commercialization. That is an announced support role, not evidence that Toyota has taken over rocket design or production. Interstellar’s alliance announcement
Automotive production methods cannot simply be copied wholesale into launch vehicles. Rocket engines, tanks, materials, testing, safety, mission assurance, and regulatory approvals impose requirements that differ sharply from building cars at volume. Toyota’s potential value is in applying disciplined industrial systems while Interstellar retains the rocket program.

Why would a car company back a rocket startup?
A broader mobility strategy
Toyota has described itself as expanding from road vehicles toward mobility across land, sea, air, and space. The Interstellar investment fits that strategic framing, although it remains a partnership investment rather than a separately announced Toyota rocket business. Toyota’s CES 2025 mobility announcement
Connectivity and satellite infrastructure
Satellite communications and launch access could matter to future mobility systems that rely on communications, positioning, mapping, and software updates, especially where terrestrial networks are limited. Interstellar’s announcement invoked the way launch and satellite services can reinforce one another, including SpaceX and Starlink. That is strategic context, not evidence that Toyota plans to build a global satellite-internet network.

Woven City as an innovation setting
Toyota presents Woven City as a test course and living laboratory for mobility, robotics, connectivity, and related technologies. Interstellar’s co-creation theme is developing a robust rocket-production system, but its rocket work takes place outside Woven City; Toyota and Woven by Toyota contribute engineering expertise and technical staff. This is not Toyota’s first connection to space. Toyota has also worked with JAXA on the Lunar Cruiser, a pressurized lunar rover concept. That separate effort concerns mobility on the Moon; it is not what the Interstellar investment funds.

How the deal developed after the first announcement
| Date | Development |
|---|---|
| January 7, 2025 | Interstellar announced Woven by Toyota’s approximately ¥7 billion investment in the first close of Series F. |
| January 28, 2025 | Woven by Toyota CEO Hajime Kumabe joined Interstellar’s board. |
| July 2025 | Interstellar announced an additional ¥8.9 billion in Series F funding. Interstellar’s funding announcement |
| August 4, 2025 | Toyota Motor Corporation, Woven by Toyota, and Interstellar announced a three-party manufacturing alliance, with Toyota personnel dispatch beginning that month. |
| January 16, 2026 | Interstellar’s release archive records the Series F round’s completion at ¥20.1 billion. That is the round total, not the amount invested by Woven by Toyota. Interstellar’s release archive |
The later fundraising and alliance show that the project grew beyond the original announcement, but the subsequent Series F totals should not be conflated with Woven by Toyota’s initial commitment.
What has to go right for the bet to pay off?
The investment is meaningful for an early-stage Japanese space company, but ¥7 billion alone does not establish a mature launch business. Development and commercial operations require more than a factory process: propulsion qualification, test vehicles and flight hardware, launch infrastructure, range-safety and regulatory approvals, insurance, customer contracts, supplier capability, and repeated reliable launches all matter.
- Engineering: Interstellar must complete ZERO development and demonstrate orbital performance.
- Manufacturing: Toyota’s processes would need to improve repeatability, schedule, or cost without compromising reliability.
- Market demand: The company must win enough paying satellite customers to support a viable launch cadence.
- Competition: Small-satellite operators can buy rideshare space on larger rockets. A dedicated launcher may offer better control over timing, orbit, or payload integration, but it must justify its economics.
- Approvals and capital: Launch operations depend on continuing regulatory and range approvals and substantial financing beyond an initial investment.
Japan’s interest in domestic launch capability can be strategically important, but national policy goals do not by themselves prove that a launch company can compete commercially. The test is whether Interstellar can achieve reliable orbital launches at a price and cadence customers will choose.
Is Toyota building its own rocket?
No Toyota-branded launcher or independent Toyota rocket program was announced in these agreements. ZERO remains Interstellar Technologies’ vehicle; Woven by Toyota is an investor and manufacturing partner, with Toyota Motor Corporation also participating in the later alliance. The most accurate description is that Toyota Group is backing a startup and helping it industrialize a Japanese orbital-launch project.
