DoorDash announced on April 27, 2026, that it was adding more than 1,000 Empire Company stores across all 10 Canadian provinces to its marketplace. The launch included major grocery banners such as Sobeys, Safeway, IGA, FreshCo, Farm Boy and Longo’s. That network-wide figure does not mean every store delivers to every address: enter your location in DoorDash to see participating nearby stores, available items and the checkout total.
What launched—and what it means for shoppers
The announcement was a marketplace partnership: DoorDash offers ordering and delivery from participating local Empire stores. It adds another way to shop; it does not mean Empire replaced Voilà. Empire describes DoorDash as one of several third-party delivery channels alongside Instacart and Uber Eats, complementing its own Voilà service. Empire’s fiscal 2026 results discuss that broader e-commerce approach.
For a shopper, the practical question is whether a particular store serves the delivery address. Assortment, item prices, delivery windows, substitutions and fees can vary by location and merchant. DoorDash says delivery times may vary and are not guaranteed.

The detailed promotional terms named a broader set of participating banners: Boni-Choix, Farm Boy, Foodland, FreshCo, IGA, Lawtons, Longo’s, Needs, Rachelle Béry, Safeway, Sobeys, Thrifty Foods and Tradition. The lists differ, so neither should be read as a guarantee that every banner or branch is available everywhere. Use the store name and availability shown for your address in DoorDash.
How to check availability and place an order
- Open the DoorDash app or Canadian DoorDash website and enter or confirm your delivery address.
- Search for a banner such as FreshCo, Sobeys or Longo’s, or browse the grocery category.
- Choose a participating local store and check its product selection and delivery estimate.
- Add items to your cart and review the substitution preferences for products that may be unavailable.
- Before ordering, check the subtotal, delivery and service fees, any small-order fee, taxes, tip and estimated time. Apply a promotion only if it is valid for your account and order.
- Place the order and follow its status in the app.
If a store does not appear, it may not participate locally, may be outside the delivery radius or may be temporarily unavailable. Try another nearby location or check again later. Some regulated products, including alcohol and pharmacy items, can have separate restrictions. The DoorDash Canada grocery page describes browsing by location and grocery-order support.
What can affect the final cost?
Do not compare an advertised item price with an in-store shelf price and assume they match. The specific merchant’s displayed prices and the complete checkout amount are what matter for your order. DoorDash fees can vary by merchant, location and order. Depending on the order, the total may include:

DoorDash’s fee guidance says DashPass members receive $0 delivery fees and reduced service fees on eligible orders, but that does not make every order fee-free. Compare the final checkout total—not just the basket subtotal—with another delivery service or an in-store trip. DoorDash’s fee explanation is published in its consumer help centre.
Can DashPass make the order cheaper?
DoorDash’s Canada DashPass page lists a price of C$9.99 per month and describes $0 delivery fees and reduced service fees on eligible orders above applicable minimums. Check the live price, terms and eligibility shown in your account before subscribing: merchant, order value and location matter, and taxes, tips and some other charges can remain. DoorDash’s DashPass page provides the current Canadian offer details.

Whether a subscription pays off depends on how often you place eligible orders and how much it saves against the membership cost. An occasional grocery customer may be better off paying fees only when ordering; frequent DoorDash users should compare the actual savings on their usual baskets.
The launch discount has expired
DoorDash’s April 27 announcement advertised 30% off one order from an Empire grocery banner for April 27 through May 3, 2026. The detailed help-centre terms listed a longer validity period, April 27 through May 6, 2026, while supplies lasted, with different conditions: new customers needed to spend more than $65 before taxes and fees for up to $25 off, while existing customers needed to spend more than $85 before taxes and fees for up to $30 off. The listed codes were FRESH65 and FRESH85, respectively. Fees, taxes and gratuity still applied; the offer was not valid for pickup and was limited to one use per person. A separate first-order offer advertised $0 delivery fees for new users, with other fees still applying. The dates and terms are stated in the announcement and promotion terms.
These were launch offers, not current deals: they had ended by August 18, 2026. Do not rely on the old codes; check your account for any promotion currently available to you.

DoorDash, Voilà, Instacart or Uber Eats?
There is no universal cheapest or fastest option established by the partnership announcement. Empire’s public filings identify DoorDash, Instacart and Uber Eats as third-party channels alongside Voilà, but coverage, inventory, delivery windows, prices, fees and loyalty treatment can differ by address and platform.
For a useful comparison, build the same basket on each service and check:

DoorDash can suit someone who wants an available nearby store, app-based tracking or an eligible promotion. A scheduled-delivery service, another platform membership or shopping in person may work out better for a large planned shop or a shopper focused on the lowest total. Verify the particular basket rather than assuming one service is always cheaper.
