Community Fibre announced a £125 million finance facility on 28 October 2024, taking the company’s stated total investment to £1.1 billion. The company said the funding would support customer acquisition, network expansion and its push to meet penetration targets. This is a historical announcement, not a new 2026 funding round.
What Community Fibre announced
The London-focused broadband provider said it had secured a £125 million finance facility provided and/or arranged by J.P. Morgan, Barclays, LBBW, Sequoia Investment Management Company (SIMCo) and Alpha Bank. The announcement did not disclose how much each institution contributed or distinguish each institution’s precise role. Computer Weekly reported the announcement on 28 October 2024.
Community Fibre said the facility brought total investment in the business to £1.1 billion. That is the company’s stated cumulative investment figure, not the size of this particular facility: the new financing was £125 million.
Facility, not a £125m equity raise
A finance facility is an arrangement under which a company can access financing subject to the facility’s terms. It is not automatically equivalent to shareholders putting £125 million of new equity into the business, nor does the headline establish that the entire amount was drawn or spent immediately. The announcement does not set out the facility’s maturity, interest rate, covenants, security package or drawdown conditions, so those terms cannot be assessed from the disclosed figures.

- Optical digital audio cable: Perfect for equipment with a TOSLINK interface (OPT In / OPT Out or S/PDIF In / S/PDIF Out). TOSLINK connector to TOSLINK connector (F05 connector)
- Versatile: Ideal for transmitting crystal-clear digital audio from your TV, video game console (PS3/PS4/Xbox One), DVD/Blu-ray player, or TV streaming box to a soundbar, amplifier/amp, stereo/Hi-Fi system, D/A converter, and more
- High-End: This metal-free fiber optic audio cable, featuring a fully flexible PVC jacket, is entirely immune to electrical interference. Each cable undergoes multi-stage testing during manufacturing to ensure maximum product quality and durability
- 24K gold-plated connectors: Corrosion resistant gold plating keeps connectors clean. And because these cables are fiber optic, they provide 100 % signal transmission with 0 % loss
- No risk: 36 months manufacturer warranty
The company linked the money to customer acquisition, network expansion and achieving penetration targets, alongside continued delivery of full-fibre services. It did not publish a detailed allocation of the proceeds, a borough-by-borough construction plan or a number of additional premises that the £125 million would directly reach. The financing therefore indicates capacity to pursue the company’s plans, not a guarantee of a specific build outcome.
Community Fibre’s position at the time
At the announcement, Community Fibre reported that its London FTTP network passed 1.3 million properties and connected more than 310,000 residents and businesses. It said its customer base had grown 85% in the previous 12 months. These are company-reported figures cited in the October 2024 coverage, rather than independently audited measures in that report.
| Measure | Reported figure | What it describes |
|---|---|---|
| New facility | £125 million | Announced 28 October 2024 |
| Total investment | £1.1 billion | Company-stated cumulative investment after the facility |
| London properties passed | 1.3 million | Premises reported as covered by its FTTP network |
| Connected residents and businesses | More than 310,000 | Company-reported active connections at the time |
| Customer-base growth | 85% | Company-reported growth in the preceding 12 months |
| Reported product range | 35Mbps to 10Gbps | Portfolio range reported in October 2024, not a current tariff list |
The same report said Community Fibre had been EBITDA positive since April 2024. EBITDA is a measure of operating performance before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation; positive EBITDA does not establish that a company is profitable after financing costs, generating positive free cash flow or debt-free.

Why properties passed are not the same as customers
“Properties passed” means premises the network can potentially serve; it does not mean those premises have subscribed. “Connected” refers to customers actually taking service. The gap matters because a network operator can incur construction costs before many of the homes and businesses it reaches become paying customers.

It is not necessarily Community Fibre’s official penetration rate: the two figures may not use exactly matching definitions or reference dates. Still, it illustrates the business question behind the financing: can subscriber growth keep pace with the expansion of the footprint?
For an altnet—an alternative network operator building infrastructure outside the incumbent’s network—this is a central commercial challenge. The operator must finance construction and access to premises, then attract enough retail or wholesale customers to make that investment sustainable. Faster rollout can enlarge the addressable market, but it also raises the amount of capital at risk if take-up is slower than planned.

Earlier funding and the rollout target
The October 2024 report placed the facility in a longer funding history: Community Fibre had announced £400 million in 2020, followed by a £985 million finance facility closed in October 2022. It also cited the company’s target of reaching 2.2 million London homes by the end of 2024. That was a historical target, not a current commitment; the October 2024 announcement alone does not establish whether the target was subsequently met, exceeded or revised.
Community Fibre had also expanded beyond London through a majority stake in Box Broadband, which operated in Surrey and West Sussex. The £125 million announcement was principally framed around the London network, so it should not be treated as a disclosed funding allocation for a specific Box Broadband build.

Community Fibre builds and operates its own FTTP network, rather than relying solely on infrastructure owned by an incumbent. In London, it competes in a market that also includes Openreach-based providers, Virgin Media O2, Hyperoptic, CityFibre-backed services and other local altnets. Which networks and retail providers are available depends on the address; the financing announcement supplies no comparative market-share, price or performance data.

The named financing institutions’ involvement is evidence that the company arranged additional funding, but it is not proof that every rollout objective will be achieved or that the business has eliminated execution risk. Investors and industry observers would need more than the headline facility size to judge the economics: the borrowing terms, build costs, take-up, wholesale activity, cash generation and future refinancing needs all matter.
The report also cited wholesale agreements with major UK internet service providers and a partnership with London Grid for Learning to provide backup connectivity to schools across London. It named Nando’s and London Grid for Learning among customers. It did not identify every wholesale partner or publish contract values, so these relationships should not be treated as a quantified guarantee of future revenue.
At the time, Community Fibre was described as owned by funds advised by Warburg Pincus, DTCP, Railpen/RPMI Railpen and NDIF. Those fund advisers and owners are distinct from the institutions named in connection with providing or arranging the facility.

What broadband customers should take from it
The funding announcement does not itself make a service available at a particular address, guarantee lower prices or promise an upgrade for existing customers. Nor does the October 2024 portfolio range establish what packages are currently sold. Customers considering a switch should use the provider’s official site to check address availability and current terms, and compare offers that are actually available to them.
- Check whether full fibre reaches the exact property, not just whether the provider operates in the borough.
- Compare upload as well as download speed, contract length, installation charges and the price after any promotion.
- Read the price-rise policy, early termination terms and the arrangements for support and outages.
- Check what router or whole-home Wi-Fi equipment is included. A nominal gigabit access speed does not mean every device will achieve that speed over Wi-Fi; router and device capability, internal wiring, interference and network conditions affect real-world performance.
Address-dependent alternatives include providers using the Openreach network, Virgin Media, Hyperoptic and retail ISPs using CityFibre. Vodafone broadband may also be available over a network serving the address. These are not universal substitutes: availability, technology, speeds and contract terms vary by location and provider.
