Note: This is an archived look at the 2025 holiday-gifting landscape, not a current shopping list. Prices, inventory, product versions, delivery promises, retailer links, and return policies from 2025 may no longer apply.
The most useful lesson from 2025 was not a single “best gift.” It was the value of matching the gift to the recipient while setting a spending limit first. Survey results also showed why holiday budgets looked different depending on what was measured: PwC found that adults planned to spend an average of $770 on gifts, while Deloitte reported $1,595 in overall seasonal spending. Those figures are not interchangeable.
What the 2025 data said about gift spending
Holiday shoppers entered 2025 with a strong focus on value, discounts, and useful presents. PwC’s October 28–30 survey of 2,092 U.S. adults found projected gift spending of $770, up from $721 in its June survey. Planned categories included gift cards for 50% of respondents, apparel for 39%, toys for 37%, and food and beverages for 34%.
Deloitte’s August 27–September 5 survey of 4,270 consumers painted a more cautious picture. Respondents expected to spend $1,595 across the season, 10% less than the previous year, and planned to purchase an average of eight gifts rather than nine. The difference does not mean one survey was necessarily wrong. PwC measured projected gift spending; Deloitte measured broader seasonal spending, which can include travel, entertaining, decorations, and other costs.

Best gifts overall: start with usefulness and fit
A financially sensible gift usually succeeds in one of three ways: it solves a known problem, creates a shared experience, or gives the recipient control over the purchase. Before buying, ask whether the person already owns something similar, whether they can afford the ongoing cost, and whether the item will create storage, subscription, or maintenance obligations.
- Useful upgrades: Replace a worn wallet, travel bag, kitchen tool, headphones, desk accessory, or winter layer with a better version of something the recipient already uses.
- Consumables: Coffee, tea, specialty food, skincare, candles, and cooking ingredients avoid the problem of adding permanent clutter.
- Flexible gifts: Gift cards, cash equivalents, and well-chosen practical items work particularly well when you do not know the recipient’s exact preferences.
- Shared experiences: A meal, museum visit, class, local event, or day trip can be more memorable than another object.
- Personal items: A handwritten note, photo, recipe collection, or carefully assembled care package can add meaning without a large price tag.
Gift ideas by recipient
Partners
Good partner gifts reflect specific knowledge rather than simply a higher price. Consider a planned date with the logistics handled, an item connected to a hobby, a repair or upgrade they have postponed, or a small personalized object paired with an experience. Avoid buying expensive electronics, clothing, or jewelry without checking the exact model, size, color, and return policy.
Parents
Practical help can be more valuable than another possession. Options include a service you arrange, a family photo or recipe project, comfortable everyday clothing, a meal delivered or prepared, or an experience you attend together. If buying technology, check compatibility with their existing devices and whether setup or a recurring subscription is required.
Friends
For friends, keep the gift proportional to the relationship and to any established exchange limit. Consumables, books chosen for a known interest, hobby supplies, small home items, and tickets to do something together are safer than guessing at personal style.
Coworkers
Workplace gifts should be modest and policy-compliant. Coffee or tea, snacks, desk consumables, a small plant, or a group contribution are usually less awkward than personal clothing, fragrance, or expensive items. Check whether your employer has a gift-value or gift-card policy.
Children and teens
For children, prioritize age suitability, safety information, durability, and whether the gift requires accessories or batteries. Google’s 2025 Holiday 100 reported a 50% rise in searches for kids’ scooters, but search growth is not proof that a scooter is appropriate for a particular child. Budget for safety equipment when relevant.
Teens may value choice and identity more than a surprise. Gift cards, hobby equipment, portable accessories, clothing from a preferred brand, and experiences can work well. Ask about the exact platform or device before buying games, accessories, or digital credit.
People who are difficult to shop for
Use a short list of questions: What do they use every week? What do they replace regularly? What do they complain about? What would they enjoy but not schedule? If the answers are unavailable, choose an experience, a useful consumable, or a gift card with a personal note instead of an expensive guess.

Splurge gifts
For an expensive gift, confirm that the recipient wants it and that you understand the full cost. Include accessories, replacement parts, warranties, shipping, taxes, storage, and subscriptions in the budget. A costly item should not become a financial burden for either person.
Personalized and handmade gifts
Personalization is most effective when it adds information or meaning rather than merely printing a name on a generic item. Examples include a map of a meaningful place, a family recipe booklet, a photo calendar, a custom illustration, a monogrammed item the recipient already uses, or a handmade version of a familiar food or craft.
Rank #3
Handmade does not automatically mean inexpensive. Materials, labor, personalization fees, and shipping can make custom products cost more than mass-market alternatives. Check production timelines early, especially for items requiring proof approval or engraving. For a historical 2025 guide, any price or retailer listed alongside a handmade recommendation should be treated as a 2025 reference, not a current quote.
Experience gifts and practical gifts
Deloitte found that 47% of respondents planned to give experiential gifts, including restaurant, event, or spa outings. Experiences can reduce clutter, but they are not automatically cheaper. Compare the ticket price with transportation, food, parking, childcare, equipment rental, and scheduling constraints.

Include the recipient in scheduling when cancellation rules are strict. For digital experiences, verify geographic restrictions, expiration dates, account requirements, and whether the recipient can transfer or reschedule the booking.
Gift cards: flexible, but not frictionless
Gift cards led PwC’s planned gift categories at 50%. They are a sensible choice when the recipient knows what they want, but the card still needs to be usable. Before buying, check:
- Whether the card works in the recipient’s country and preferred channel
- Expiration dates, inactivity fees, and redemption restrictions
- Whether it can be used online, in stores, or both
- Whether the retailer permits split payments or partial balances
- What happens if the card is lost or the retailer closes
Keep the receipt and activation record until the balance is confirmed. Buy directly from the retailer or a reputable seller, and inspect physical packaging for tampering. A digital card should be sent to the correct email address and protected from being exposed in a shared inbox.
Self-gifting in 2025
NielsenIQ reported that more than half of holiday shoppers planned to buy personal gifts for themselves. That makes self-gifting worth including in a budget rather than treating it as an invisible expense. Set a separate limit for personal purchases and decide whether the item replaces a planned purchase or is an addition.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA useful test is to wait 24 hours, compare the item’s total cost, and ask whether you would still buy it without a holiday discount. “On sale” does not mean affordable if the purchase is financed at high interest or displaces an emergency-fund contribution.

Google’s Holiday 100, published November 3, 2025, reflected U.S. search behavior rather than product testing, sales, or quality rankings. Google said it processed more than 1 billion shopping-related searches per day. Notable search increases included movie projectors, up 945%; kids’ scooters, up 50%; and stackable ring sets, whose searches doubled. The list also included backpack charms, drop-waist dresses, crescent bags, packing cubes, styling wands, red-light therapy, weighted vests, and stretching straps.
These figures show what people searched for, not what made the best gifts. A movie projector may require a suitable wall, speakers, cables, and a dark room. Red-light devices and weighted fitness products may be unsuitable for some users. Search interest should be a starting point for research, not a substitute for checking safety, quality, compatibility, and total cost.
Etsy’s 2025 holiday trend coverage used labels including “Nonna Holiday,” “Supper Clubs,” “Play Haus,” “Nutcrackercore,” “Gothmas,” and “Shiver the Season.” These were Etsy trend labels and marketplace-search observations, not universal consumer categories. They can inspire a themed gift, but they should not be presented as independently verified nationwide rankings.

Last-minute and digital gifts
When a physical delivery deadline is gone, consider a digital gift card, a paid reservation, an online class, an audiobook or ebook, a membership, or a scheduled service. Confirm that the recipient can use the service, that the purchase is available in their location, and that automatic renewal is disabled or clearly disclosed.
A last-minute gift can also be a written promise with a specific plan: “Dinner at this restaurant on January 10,” or “I will organize and pay for the museum visit.” Specificity makes a delayed gift feel intentional. Do not promise a date or activity before checking the recipient’s schedule.
A simple 2025-style holiday gift budget
- List recipients: Include family, friends, coworkers, hosts, teachers, charitable donations, and yourself.
- Set a total ceiling: Use available cash, not an optimistic estimate of future income or a credit limit.
- Assign individual caps: Write the maximum for each person before browsing.
- Add non-item costs: Include tax, shipping, wrapping, cards, travel, food, event fees, and accessories.
- Choose the gift type: Object, experience, consumable, gift card, or practical help.
- Track commitments: Record purchases, pending orders, gift-card values, and return deadlines in one place.
- Review before checkout: Compare the final total, not just the advertised price, and avoid buying duplicates.
For a $600 total gift budget, for example, a household might allocate $200 to immediate family, $100 to friends, $75 to coworkers and hosts, $100 to experiences, $75 to shipping and wrapping, and $50 to self-gifting. The percentages are not rules; the point is to reserve money for costs that otherwise appear after the shopping is complete.
FAQ
What was the average gift budget in 2025?

What were the most popular gifts in 2025?
There is no single verified answer in the cited research. Google’s Holiday 100 measured search interest, not sales or product quality. It highlighted movie projectors, backpack charms, kids’ scooters, crescent bags, packing cubes, and other products, but search growth alone does not establish that an item was the most popular or best gift.
Are gift cards a good gift?
They can be, particularly when you know the recipient’s preferred retailer or service. Check expiration terms, fees, geographic restrictions, redemption methods, and the retailer’s financial stability. Keep the activation receipt until the balance is confirmed.
How should I use this Gift Guide 2025 now?
Use it as a historical reference for 2025 trends, budgeting, and gift categories. Do not rely on old prices, stock information, delivery dates, product versions, or retailer links. For any current purchase, recheck the item’s price, availability, warranty, and return policy.
The Bottom Line
The best 2025 gift strategy was a controlled one: decide the total budget, set a limit for each recipient, account for delivery and event costs, and choose gifts based on actual use rather than search rankings. Gift cards, experiences, personalized items, consumables, and practical upgrades all worked—but only when they fit the recipient and the buyer’s finances. Treat the figures and trends here as an archived 2025 record, not as current shopping guidance.
