The M5 MacBook Air’s March 2026 launch came with a $50 Best Buy gift card, not $50 off at checkout. The 13-inch M5 started at $1,099 and the 15-inch at $1,299; meanwhile, a reported $1,099 deal on a 15-inch M4 included 16GB of memory and 512GB of storage. A separate $949 listing was for a 256GB M4, so the two M4 prices were not equivalent.
These are historical launch-period prices, not verified live offers. The choice comes down to whether newer connectivity and 512GB as the M5’s base storage justify paying the new-model price—or whether a correctly configured M4 is discounted enough to make the savings more valuable.
What launched, and when?
Apple announced the M5 MacBook Air on March 3, 2026. U.S. preorders began March 4 at 6:15 a.m. Pacific, and retail availability began March 11. The lineup includes 13-inch and 15-inch models in sky blue, midnight, starlight, and silver. Apple listed U.S. starting prices of $1,099 and $1,299, respectively; education pricing was $999 and $1,199.
Best Buy’s launch-period offer paired either M5 model with a $50 Best Buy gift card at its standard starting price. The Verge reported the promotion and the M4 prices on March 4. Its coverage does not establish the full gift-card terms, such as issue timing, expiration, eligibility, or whether membership was required. The offer should not be assumed to remain available now. Apple’s launch announcement and The Verge’s March 4 deal report document the launch-period details.

How the launch prices compared
| Model and configuration | Reported U.S. price | Promotion or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 13-inch MacBook Air with M5, entry configuration | $1,099 | $50 Best Buy gift card during the reported preorder promotion; not an immediate price reduction. |
| 15-inch MacBook Air with M5, entry configuration | $1,299 | $50 Best Buy gift card during the reported preorder promotion; not an immediate price reduction. |
| 15-inch MacBook Air with M4, 16GB memory, 512GB SSD | $1,099 | Reported as an all-time-low price at the time by The Verge. |
| 15-inch MacBook Air with M4, 16GB memory, 256GB SSD | $949 | A separate, lower-storage listing displayed in The Verge’s coverage; not the same configuration as the $1,099 M4. |
The $1,099 comparison is the closest storage match: the reported M4 configuration had 512GB, as does the M5 entry configuration. The M5 still has a newer chip and wireless standards. The $949 M4 is cheaper, but its 256GB drive is half the capacity of the M5 entry model. The prices above are historical, as reported on March 4, 2026; current inventory and pricing are not established by those reports.
What the M5 adds over the M4
Newer chip and acceleration
Apple lists the M5 with a 10-core CPU, an up-to-10-core GPU with Neural Accelerators and hardware-accelerated ray tracing, and a 16-core Neural Engine. Apple claims up to four times faster AI performance than M4. It also reports up to 1.9 times faster AI video enhancement in Topaz Video, up to 1.5 times faster 3D rendering in Blender, and up to 1.5 times faster image processing in Affinity. These are Apple’s comparisons, not independent test results, and describe particular applications or workloads rather than a guaranteed speed increase in every task.

More storage at the entry level
The M5 starts with a 512GB SSD, which Apple describes as double the previous generation’s starting storage, and can be configured with up to 4TB. Apple also says the new SSD has twice the read and write performance of the previous generation. Those claims concern the entry-level starting point and Apple’s specified comparison; they do not mean every M5 has more storage than every M4. The 16GB/512GB M4 deal, for example, matched the M5 entry model’s capacity.
Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6
The M5 introduces Apple’s N1 wireless chip, with Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. The M4 uses older wireless standards. This is a concrete reason to prefer the newer model if you expect to keep it for years and plan to use compatible networking or accessories; the benefit depends on having compatible equipment and does not make an M4 unsuitable for ordinary internet use.

Features that are not unique to M5
The M5 Air’s broader design remains a fanless aluminum laptop with a 13.6-inch or 15.3-inch Liquid Retina display rated at 500 nits, a 12MP Center Stage camera, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, support for up to two external displays, and an Apple-rated battery life of up to 18 hours. Battery life varies with use. These are M5 specifications, not a list of features that should be treated as entirely new relative to M4.
Apple’s MacBook Air technical specifications provide the listed hardware details. The launch announcement also described eligible U.S. Apple Card purchases as offering 0% APR financing and 3% Daily Cash, subject to terms and eligibility; that is a separate purchase path from Best Buy’s gift-card promotion.

Which model makes more financial sense?
Choose the M5 13-inch for portability and a current-generation baseline
At its historical $1,099 starting price, the 13-inch M5 was the smaller, less expensive M5 option, with 512GB storage and the newer wireless standards. The $50 gift card only improves its value to the extent that you would otherwise spend at Best Buy. A buyer who would not use the credit should compare the full $1,099 price with the alternatives.
Choose the M5 15-inch if screen space is worth the premium
The 15-inch M5 started $200 above the 13-inch model in the U.S. launch pricing. It suits buyers who want a larger display without moving to a MacBook Pro, but the reported 15-inch M4 with 16GB/512GB was $1,099—$200 below the M5 15-inch’s launch starting price. If the M4 configuration and its condition meet your needs, that price difference is more consequential than the M5 gift card.

Choose an M4 when the actual discount matters more than the newer platform
For web browsing, office work, school, streaming, coding, and moderate photo or video editing, an M4 may be the better value if its price is materially lower and its memory and storage suit your work. The reported $949 256GB model is the lowest of the listed prices, but buyers should consider whether 256GB is enough for apps and files. If comparing with the M5’s 512GB entry configuration, account for the storage difference rather than treating $949 as a like-for-like price.
Apply the gift card as conditional value, not cash savings
For a personal budget, distinguish the amount charged today from the value of a future store credit. The M5 checkout price remained $1,099 or $1,299 in the reported offer. A $50 gift card is close to $50 of practical value only if you would use it for a purchase you already planned; otherwise its value to you may be lower. Also compare tax, shipping, return policies, financing, and the exact memory and storage configuration before choosing a seller.
Quick Recap
How to check a deal before buying
- Match the configuration. Confirm screen size, chip, memory, and SSD capacity on the retailer listing. In particular, do not confuse the reported 15-inch M4 16GB/256GB at $949 with the 16GB/512GB model reported at $1,099.
- Confirm the price and promotion at checkout. The cited prices and Best Buy gift-card offer are from March 2026 coverage, not a current availability check. The Best Buy MacBook offers page is a place to check current listings; it does not establish that the historical offer remains active.
- Read the gift-card terms. Verify how and when credit is issued, any expiration or eligibility conditions, and what happens if the order is canceled or returned. The historical deal report confirms the amount but not those terms.
- Compare the purchase routes you would actually use. Apple’s Trade In values vary by device and condition, and AppleCare+ coverage and pricing should be checked for the specific model and date at AppleCare. Eligible buyers can review Apple Card installment terms at Apple Card Monthly Installments. These options are not equivalent to a Best Buy gift card, and their value depends on eligibility and individual circumstances.
