The conclave instead elected Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who became Pope Leo XIV. The episode shows how a market can misread a decision made privately by a small group—even when its eventual outcome is clear and verifiable.
What Polymarket got wrong—and what it did not
The conclave elected Robert Francis Prevost, who took the name Leo XIV. Vatican News reported the announcement on May 8, 2025, identifying him as the 267th Bishop of Rome; Cardinal Protodeacon Dominique Mamberti announced his name to the public. Vatican News’s report also records Leo XIV’s first words: “Peace be with all of you!”
Polymarket’s market asked “Who will be the next Pope?” and specified that the Catholic Church’s official announcement was its primary resolution source, with a consensus of credible reporting also considered. Once the Church announced Prevost, the result was determined by the market’s stated rule—not by which cardinal had attracted the most speculation. The market page sets out that resolution basis.
The miss was that Parolin, not Prevost, was described in contemporaneous coverage as the market favorite after white smoke signaled the conclave’s end. That does not mean every trader thought Prevost impossible, or that the market had no chance of resolving to him. A reported favorite is a relative ranking at a particular time, not a guarantee or a complete account of every price throughout trading.

What the reported prices can—and cannot—tell you
Axios reported a pronounced shift toward Parolin after white smoke. Its separate April 22 snapshot put Parolin at 37 cents and Luis Antonio Tagle at 26 cents. Those are prices reported for that earlier date; they should not be presented as the final odds or as prices observed immediately before the announcement. Axios’s April 22 report provides that dated comparison.
A prediction-market price is a changing market signal, often read as an implied probability. It is not a certainty, and a low price does not mean an outcome is impossible. To judge how sharply Polymarket discounted Prevost just before the result, a reader would need an archived price with a clear timestamp. The reported sources do not establish a complete timestamp-by-timestamp series for Prevost immediately before the election, so an exact final probability should not be inferred.

Keep three kinds of figures separate when reading coverage:
- Market price: a quote for an outcome at a specified time, such as Axios’s April 22 prices.
- Market-implied probability: an interpretation of a price, not a guarantee; it changes as trading changes.
- Total wagered: a reported volume figure, which is not itself a probability or a measure of accuracy.
Why a papal conclave is a difficult forecast
The decisive information is private
Cardinals cast ballots inside the conclave. Public observers can track candidates’ reputations and published reporting, but they cannot directly observe the discussions, private preferences, or shifts in support that determine the vote. A market may aggregate public beliefs and trading activity without gaining access to that crucial information.

Public attention can move prices without revealing the vote
White smoke was a powerful signal that a pope had been chosen, but it did not identify the winner. Axios reported that odds swung heavily toward Parolin after the smoke appeared. That movement shows a change in market expectations, not proof that traders had learned the cardinals’ choice.
A short list can obscure an unexpected candidate
Markets depend on the outcomes they offer and the way participants assess them. The useful questions are whether the market includes an “other” option or all plausible candidates, how much liquidity and trading volume each outcome has, and when a quoted price was recorded. The available reporting does not establish a complete comparable set of figures for those dimensions, so they cannot be used here to quantify how much any one factor contributed to the miss.

What the result says about Pope Leo XIV’s selection
Vatican News’s year-end review says Prevost was elected on the fourth ballot. It describes him as the first pope from the United States and notes that he spent more than 22 years in Peru. Those details provide context for his profile, but they do not show that public observers or market traders had a full view of the cardinals’ private assessment before the vote. Vatican News’s retrospective gives the ballot and biographical context.

Le Monde reported that approximately $40 million was wagered on the new pope market and that some successful bettors received winnings as high as $60,000. Those are figures attributed to Le Monde, not independently audited exchange totals. They describe reported activity and payouts, not the market’s accuracy or the probability assigned to Prevost at any particular moment. Le Monde’s report gives that account.

The broader interest was also visible before the election: Sam Eaton, UK manager for Oddschecker, told the Associated Press, “There’s a huge level of interest globally.” AP published the comment in its May 3, 2025 report on betting on the next pope. The AP report captures that attention, but interest is not evidence of predictive skill.
Quick Recap
What personal-finance readers should take away
- Do not treat a market favorite as a sure winner. It is a changing snapshot of market expectations.
- Check the timestamp before comparing prices with an event. A price from April 22 cannot stand in for odds after white smoke or immediately before the announcement.
- Separate forecast prices from volume and payout figures; each answers a different question.
- For outcomes decided behind closed doors, market prices can be especially vulnerable to limited information and sudden changes in public interpretation.
- One miss is not enough to establish that prediction markets are generally unreliable. Assessing broad accuracy would require evidence across many events and comparable time-stamped forecasts.
