The document associated with “Customer Satisfaction: HDFC vs SBI Study” is a student project based on 70 respondents, and it conflicts about whether its survey took place in Chandigarh or Patiala. Its findings are useful as a small-sample snapshot, not as a verdict on either bank across India.
Is the HDFC–SBI satisfaction report an RBI study?
No. “Reserve Bank Of India” appears as a Scribd category, not as the report’s publisher or author. The document is described as a student MBA comparative project. Its original submission date is not established in the surfaced text, and no official RBI, HDFC Bank, or SBI statement comparing customer satisfaction was identified in the materials available for this comparison.
The project says it surveyed 70 non-staff customers using a questionnaire and convenience sampling: 35 SBI customers and 35 HDFC customers. Its methods section places the survey in Chandigarh, but its limitations section says Patiala. Because those accounts conflict, its location cannot be stated confidently. The short survey period, small sample and non-random selection also mean the findings should not be generalized to all customers or treated as current bank-wide measures.
What did the 70-person project report?
For overall satisfaction, respondents selected categories ranging from “excellent” to “below average.” The table gives the report’s counts as printed; each bank’s column represents 35 respondents.
#1 Best Overall
| Reported overall rating | SBI respondents | HDFC respondents |
|---|---|---|
| Excellent | 8 | 7 |
| Good | 6 | 12 |
| Satisfactory | 18 | 8 |
| Average | 3 | 5 |
| Below average | 0 | 3 |
“Satisfactory” was the most common SBI response in this sample; “good” was the most common HDFC response. These are counts from the project’s respondents, not population estimates. The categories are not a standardized score, and the report does not establish a statistically representative difference between the banks.
Which facilities did respondents say satisfied them most?
The project also asked which facility satisfied respondents most. These are respondent counts, not measures of service quality or usage; the original category labels are retained.
| Facility named | SBI respondents | HDFC respondents |
|---|---|---|
| ATM | 13 | 10 |
| Loan | 7 | 4 |
| Early cheque clearance | 2 | 8 |
| Preparation of drafts | 3 | 2 |
| Interest package | 3 | 3 |
| Net banking | 3 | 5 |
| Phone banking | 4 | 3 |
How do other studies compare HDFC and SBI?
Other studies add context, but they measure different things in different samples. Their findings should not be combined into one ranking.
| Study | Sample and place | What it measured and reported |
|---|---|---|
| Student comparative project; submission date not established | 70 respondents, 35 per bank; location conflicts between Chandigarh and Patiala | Questionnaire ratings of overall satisfaction and most-satisfying facilities, reported as counts |
| Dr. V. Sridevi and Sangeetha G, July 2022 | 150 respondents in Coimbatore, 75 per bank | A descriptive questionnaire study. The most frequently reported difficulty was customer relationship for SBI (31%) and interest package for HDFC (31%). Its facility rankings placed net banking first for HDFC and interest package first for SBI. |
| Journal of Management World, 2024 | Study details not stated here | A SERVQUAL service-quality comparison reported average service-quality gaps of -0.30 for SBI and -0.22 for HDFC. It said SBI performed better on some parameters, while HDFC was stronger on responsiveness, assurance and empathy, and its overall conclusion favored HDFC. |
The 2022 percentages describe that study’s Coimbatore respondents, not customers in general. The 2024 gap figures are the paper’s calculations within a service-quality framework; they are not satisfaction percentages. Neither result establishes a nationwide ranking.

What can a reader conclude?
The small student project records different response patterns in its two groups, while the Coimbatore survey and 2024 service-quality paper offer separate, method-specific results. A 2013 article by Ritika Gauba and R. C. Mishra, “Customer Satisfaction in the Banking Sector: A Study of SBI and HDFC,” is bibliographically recorded in Prajnan, volume 42, issue 2, pages 163–184, and was first published online September 1, 2013. Its full text is access-restricted, so its detailed findings cannot be verified from the available record.
Taken together, these materials do not answer which bank currently has more satisfied customers nationwide. They describe particular samples, locations, measures and publication periods. A fair bank choice requires evidence relevant to the customer’s own needs and location; these studies alone cannot settle it.
